Screenshot
O.k., we've finally gotton to actually desigining webpages in webpage design (don't ask), and I know exactly what I want to do. I want to do a parody of both BGs. I'm going to take screenshots, and put in subtitles.
Problem is, I remember that special they did to promote TNS, and it had a scene where the two Starbucks were together at Starbuck's. I want a screenshot of that so I can subtitle it "Don't even try it sissy boy." Can anyone help me.
BTW, don't expect the website up too soon (if at all).

Parody is protected, as is satire. As long as he's clear on his intent to satirize or parody it, he should be OK.
I'm not a lawyer, but I do a lot of reading.......

Parody is protected yes, but if he is talking about overlaying subtitles ontop of screenshots, then he may fall foul of the 'moral' rights of the copyright owner. This IS a part of copyright law, the owners have the right not to have their worked changed in a way they find distastful.
The overlaying of subtitles may be an example of this. I too am not a lawyer though

He can probably be covered under the fan "entertainment" and "education" purposes that most fan sites operate under.... with a legal disclaimer of that sort.
Too bad RDM doesn't still post at CA. He was once a member and Mustex could've tried a PM there. (not sure he ever read them but it would've been something to try).

Would that be under English or American copyright law?

If he was still a member of any BSG forum, he would have taken quite a battering ! I wish more people were like Aaron and joined in the fun, even after entering the public eye....

RDM--he took the abuse in silence and still gave Sandy some good interviews. He gets some props for that I think.

Although I do not know RDM at all...everything I've read about him as far as his dealing with the batterings, and the Clone Wars (read: fake support), and his interviews seems to suggest to me that despite his take on the new show, he seems to be a far more alright person than many fans of TOS give him credit for.
I realize that this deals with a different subject, but does anyone else have the Deep Space Nine Technical Manual? At the back of the book, there is an afterward by Ronald D. Moore. Clearly he was a fan of Star Trek.
If he were a fan of the original Battlestar Galactica, I think he might have been more inclined to do something with Galactica that would've pleased ALL Galactica fans.
Respectfully,
Martok2112

In point of fact, he invited the abuse. What he did raised the awareness and curiosity and probably added measurably to the December ratings.
I'd be happy to take some verbal abuse if it actually increased my viewership.
He's been in the business long enough to know there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I don't get this, Martok. Had RDM done the right thing, there would still be only one BSG fanbase. But I doubt he would have pleased ALL of us. Languaship comes to mind...

Well...I guess when a different entity does the work based on someone else's idea, you are bound to not please everyone. Look at the whole Berman/Braga thing with Star Trek. As far as most Trek fans are concerned, they've bastardized the Trek franchise with their particular stamp. The same is said about RDM by strict classic Galactica fans.
Even if someone else were to do a more faithful continuation of Classic Galactica, without the auspices of Glen A. Larson, it would still not please EVERY fan of TOS.
Enlighten me on your Languaship tack, please?
Respectfully,
Martok2112

It doesnt matter if youree in the right or wrong. What matters is who has the more powerfull lawyers, them or you.
Take King Features Syndicate. The publishers of Family Circus, Dilbert and Peanuts.
Once there was a parody site called "Dysfunctional Family Circus" Where sitegoers were allowed to make new captions for those really felgercarbty Family Circus strips. Often making them pretty risque. Creator Bil Keane, a humorless old bastard got King's lawyers to crush the site.
Same with "The Dibert Hole", another site that got the riot act read to them and were forced to take the altered comic strips down.
More recently a music video was made featuring the song "Hey Ya!" set to Charlie Brown cartoons. Once again King's goons went in and forced them to take it off their site.
It doesnt matter if you feel youre in the right. It doesnt matter if you actually ARE in the right. It isnt even remotely an issue. In the end its He who has the most powerful lawyer wins. If they dont like yor site, theyre gonna take it down. They can afford drawn out court cases. Odds are you cant.
Not saying that it WILL happen. Not at all. But thats a little education in how the world works. It IS a distinct possibility, with notable instances to support it, and must be acknowledged. Dont get complacent

Hmmmmm...I wonder what's going to happen with Mike Wong's synopsis of "Star Trek: Nemesis":
http://stardestroyer.net/Nemesis/Pictorial-1.html
Anyway, I like to think Universal won't sue a guy who runs around the internet, singing their praises.

Just dont try to sell anything on your site Mustex. If you use copyrighted images and then sell something you can get in trouble.

They aren't up yet, nor are they ready to go up (that one pic is all I have for my "Misc." section), but my WPD teacher said he was trying to get the tech school I'm going to (I'm doing a duel-enrollment thing, although this isn't how I want to spend the rest of my life, but that's a long story) said he was trying to get them to let us use space on the school's server to put them up.
