An example for what I intend...
This composite was accomplished by using my SONY DCR-TRV350 videocamera, and taking a picture of one of my two inch micromachines..in this case, a Super Star Destroyer.
This pic, composited against a nice shot of Tatooine, (and thanks to a little bit of FX added in by Paint Shop Pro 9) oughtta give an idea of what I am expecting to be able to do (on a TOS fanfilm level) when I get my Galactica, Pegasus, and basestar miniatures, in addition to my Viper and Raider.
Respectfully,
Martok2112

Another image..composited from two more micromachines.
This was a rush job...but still, I will do some quality stuff when I get down to doing my short fanfilms.

Absolutely....
Here is the pic of my micromachine Super Star Destroyer, as taken by my Sony Digital Video Camera
and the background I composited it against:
And then, with some touching up (engine glow, sunburst, etc) via PaintShop Pro 9, we get this:

Notice here where I have removed some detailing in the star destroyer's conning tower so that the shield globes, and the antenna are distinct.
Same here with these raw shots of my micromachine X Wing and TIE Interceptor:
and this shot of Tatooine:
and once again, thanks to MSPaint (to draw straighter laser shots) and PaintShop Pro 9 to give the lasers some glow, we get this:
Amazing how two inch miniatures can look larger than life with a little bit of "trick photography"
I hope this shows you an idea of what I had to do.
And these are just still shots. The idea of a fanfilm will be a much more tedious process. And I've already had some experience in that area when I shot my teaser trailer for my fanfic "Battlestar Galactica: Dark Exodus"
Respectfully,
Martok2112

awesome have you thought of buying some gree or blue poster board and set up a mini blue/green screen etup at home? make a box with them and that way you can composite the backgrown in? all you need is a few table lamps for extra lights incase you need them, but then you can use plastic stics and also paint them blue or green or use clear ones to hold the models so you dont have to do all the work and cotting your hands out or masking them. just some thoughts. i set up a blue screen in my base ment years ago and would take pics of my kids and put the back ground in different places around the world. was fun to do. i have to see if i still have the before pics and ill post them.

There are a couple of proggies out there (can't remember their names) that come with greenscreens and have chroma-key technology so I can film a ship, and place it against a different background via computer...but, I would need to get a hold of sticks or holders that match the color of the greenscreen.

oh you can use alot of them, i use vegas video for video, but premiere, media studio, after effects work great. aslo you can do this in photoshop and there is a plugin called primmatte keyer i believe that help with this process. i think that plug in can also work on paintshop pro. but you really need is just buy a green or blue spay paint and it can jey it out pretty well. you got me thinking with this alot, i may have to go shopping today for poster board and spray paint and do some shots

Hmm, this has a lot of potential.
Of course, for big ships, you could just do it the old way if you've got a garage or something like that and get some foil, spray it black punch some hole through it and shine light through the holes and make an overhead track to suspend your model from wires on.
Of course the trick is hiding the wires. A technique I've read about is actually hanging the miniature upside down and your camera too because the eye will look for the wires coming from the top and not the bottom.

Yep. I am thinking (in the future off of ebay...as much as I ain't likin it right now) of getting a Revel (yes, the lesser detailed version) version of the Galactica and a basestar for more close up shots,, and I could shoot the models upside down for whatever angle I seek.
One of the movie making proggies I have actually lets you rotate the picture...so, if I were to videotape a battlestar upside down, I can set the video right side up in this program.
The nice thing about my videocamera is that the lens is at the top right of the camera, with no bulk to get in the way....so, I am able to get very close underside (or topside if I shoot upside down) shots of any ship. And with an 18 inch model of the Galactica, if you thought I made the micromachines look big...well...just look out for this puppy! (must get 18 inch Galactica and Basestar first)
Respectfully,
Martok2112

This is my first post to colonial fleets.
A friend of mine mention that there was recruiting going on for volunteer animators for a BSG:TOS FanFilm here; I've been searching for about an hour and can't seem to find it.
Or is this the thread?

Howdy, Paganize.
I think I saw such a calling for animators at Cylon.org in the Fanfilm section under their forums.
Right now, my little project is a one man job, unless....
What kind of animation are you speaking of?
Character animation? CGI ship animation?
Do tell? I would like to know. What you can do might just fall into my calling as well.
There are so many talented people in the Galactica community. I would love to be able to pool some resources/talent, and create a truly awesome fanfilm.
Welcome to the Fleets, btw.

The guy you want to talk to is Sept 17th either here at Fleets or over at Cylon.org
Then again, I have the feeling that a FEW TOS fan projects will be springing up around here, so keep your eyes open.

Ooooh this thread me likey-likey very much. Martok I enjoyed reading your PM the other day I am very interested in the idea of working with miniatures. I'll be intouch when I have a little more time.
Paganize, I put out the call for CGI types...still need 'em. Your links above did not work.

I'm glad you like the thread, and what I have in mind, Sept17th.
Alas now...it looks like I am fracked! First, someone outbids me on the Galactica. And now, someone's just outbid me on the Pegasus, and obviously, I cannot afford to outbid someone else, because everytime I try to place a bid, I find out it is STILL not enough.
What PRICKS!!!!
I have an alternate means of acquiring miniatures...I just hope that comes through.
But for now, yeah, I'm pretty ticked off.
I officially hate EBAY!!! I'd rather get guaranteed buys than waste my sanity on the pricks who like to outbid people at the last fracking minute!!!
Respectfully,
Martok2112

Very interesting stuff, there, Paganize.
Folks, for the first link, I had to select the Real Player version. That's the only one I got to see...but it's pretty cool
