Red Squadron
Okay so what happened to Red Squadron?
The G was supposed to have two squadrons, Red and Blue, but red never gets a look in after Saga. Mind you, I think Red is only mentioned in the dialogue as they approach the basestar at the finale.

Their red on red arm badges didn't show up under the 'red alert' lighting, so the squadron was permenantly disbanded

They merged with White Squadron to become Pink Squadron, led by Athena.

For some reason, I always thought the battlestars had four squadrons. Where is the compliment laid out? In fact, I could use some authorative "facts" about the battlestars at the moment since the books don't match up with the novels.

Tabbi.......all of a sudden I'd like to be in Pink Squadron as well !
I think the night shift idea is quite plausible. Perhaps they only had x amount of vipers, and night and day pilots shared a viper ? All the main characters were in the day squadron, so that's who the show focused on ?
Or red squadron could just be the guys we keep seeing blow up in the background, and the script writers didn't think to give them another mention !

Being assigned to Red Squadron is like being given a red shirt in Star Trek.

If I remember correctly, there is scene cut in Saga where Starbuck is near the elevator on Carillon and runs into a couple guys and asks what happened to red squadron. One responds by saying they were sealed in a chamber and they've cut off the power to the doors
Perhaps they never made it out and were Ovion food...

I thought there was four.. Blue, Red, Yellow and Green
From memory, when Apollo and Starbuck are baiting the Basestar with pretend reinforcements, Starbuck mentions yellow and green, and then orange and purple, The bridge only says 'we don't have purple or orange squadrons' before Apollo says he's sure they 'have enough"
I'm not certain without checking the DVDs, so I might be misremembering the yellow and green.
It always made sense to me that the battlestar would have four squadrons, on rotation, two out of each pod. But I defer to those with greater military knowledge.
Cheers,
Lara

Lara,
Nope, you're dead-on vis the dialogue. The only squadrons I've heard actually mentioned on the Gal herself were Blue and Red; Green and Yellow may have been squadron colors from one of the Cimtar Battlestar squadrons, and Athena - not realizing its Apollo and Starbuck - likely assumed it was some of those pilots. Purple and Orange, though Those colors are probably not used at all, at least going from Apollo's reaction.
Battlestars seem to run two squadrons, one per landing bay, with each squadron divided into a number of 'wings'; total numbers seem to be 32 Vipers/sqdrn, 16 to a wing, for a total count of 64(which I think jibes with the screen counts), I think they could double that number in a pinch, but it would get pretty crowded in the bays. IIRC, the term 'flights' are used, but I think that refers to a pair of Vipers.
The overall organization seems vaguely British......
