The Nanaimo Film Commission announced this week that the NBC Universal Studios affiliate, the SCI FI Channel, is setting up shop in Nanaimo to film a new television pilot this spring called Eureka.
The SCI FI Channel has produced such television shows as Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
According to a press release issued by Film Nanaimo, Eureka is a SCI FI Channel original movie pilot written by Andy Cosby and Jamie Paglia. Peter O’Fallon, an accomplished television director for such notable series as Northern Exposure, Party of Five, The Twilight Zone, Cupid, Kingpin and more recently Wonderfalls, Las Vegas and House, will be directing.
Asked how Nanaimo came to be the location for the pilot, Film Nanaimo’s Liaison Officer, Amanda Thomson, says “they called us.”
According to Thomson, Nanaimo beat out Vancouver, Duncan and Victoria for the project, thanks in many ways to the Coast Bastion Inn for providing accommodations for the scouting team, Longwood Brew House for feeding them and Budget Rentals for providing transportation. Jason Winton from Collier International Realtors was also instrumental in securing a production office on Townsite Rd. and a 21,000 square foot studio in north Nanaimo.
The film company’s first order of business is to locate male twins, triplets and quadruplets in the area for a scene in Eureka, which will begin shooting in Ladysmith later this month.
Casting director Michelle Allen is seeking “identicals”, preferably over 60 years of age, but she will also consider those 40 years and up. No acting experience is necessary and parties should contact her at 604-732-0367.
According to Film Nanaimo, the premise behind Eureka is that “for years, the government has been relocating the world’s geniuses (and their families) to the Pacific Northwest town of Eureka, where daily life walks the line between unprecedented innovation and total chaos.
“When U.S. Marshal Jack Carter becomes stranded in Eureka, he soon discovers that all is not what it seems. After the town’s eccentric inhabitants unleash a scientific creation still unknown to the outside world, Carter steps in to restore order and consequently is let in on one of the country’s best-kept secrets.”
