Mini review from Australia
I've finally seen the mini, after importing the DVD from the UK, and my overwhelming reaction is congratulations to all on such a wonderful production. I was stunned and 'taken in' completely by the "realism" (for want of a better word) achieved by this production. The SFX were first rate, I've never seen anything like them on a TV production.
I have to disagree with critisims posted here before about the quality of acting, IMHO it was generally very good, and I can find no sound basis for objections to the gender switching of characters. It all worked very well as far as I'm concerned.
My only significant criticisms are these:
The brief lapse into 'Star Trek'-style cliche when Apollo saved the civilian fleet with a silly technobabble solution to a Cylon attack, by mimicing a nuclear explosion. This jolted me right out of "suspension of disbelief", which had been sustained until then. It took me back to a lot of my objections to Star Trek and other Sci Fi writing of late.
Of lesser concern, but still annoying, was the contrived plot turn that saw Adama and the Cylon isolated together on the station. Again, it was just silly and disrupted by suspension of disbelief. Surely there was a better way of writing the characters into a situation where they could interact? Similarly the Cylon device "hidden in plain sight" on the bridge was also a bit clumsy and unbelievable.
But overall EXCELLENT work, congrats again to all involved. I hope the series maintains the best elements of the mini - namely the REALISM. I haven't been a regular sci fi viewer since the better days of Star Trek The Next Gen, and I'm glad to say that will change with this new series.
