I had decided against it based on the first previews I saw, showing as you said sweaty guys hitting each other, but after seeing different previews later on I had a feeling there could be more to it than mindless violence (my first impression). When I rented the video I was so awestruck by the first viewing that I immediately watched it a second time, and then a third time the next day. What is fun about the second and third viewings, after the shocking plot twist at the end, is seeing all the clues and suggestions placed throughout the film which made sense only after knowing what the story was really about.

I do hope to read the novel the film was based on, as I have heard similar praises about the author.
