Tennessee is a beautiful state, braxiss. In Memphis, you are in the westernmost part of the state, Arkansas is right across the river via I-40. Going east, though, you will pass through some of the most beautiful countryside in the US. If you like "green", that is.

Ouch.
Memphis is the most populated city in TN. Most urban developed, with all its attendant problems. Right at the edge of Arkansas and Mississippi. Plenty of casinos and riverboats close by. Good blues environment. Nashville, Knoxville, or Chattanooga, I would say go for it, but Memphis has some issues. Of course, you can also visit Graceland any time you want. But one of the bad things I have heard about MEM is that the people are more rude than those of us in the rest of the south. A friend was once asking directions to Graceland from a local, and was deliberately told to go the wrong way. Literacy rate is quite low there. A few years ago only 40% of high school students were graduating, contributing to crime and social issues. Frankly, I would rather go to Atlanta than Memphis if I had to pick a larger southern city. |
