Absolutely Amazing

This website is unbelievable! I heard about this new remake coming out and decided to surf the web for information. I landed here. To my shock and amazement there are a whole bunch of people, who for apparently many years, have been debating and praying for its return.
I thought I was the only one who even remembered it, much less wondered why noone had tried to bring it back.
Now I'm trying to follow the Larsen/Hatch/Desanto/Moore thing. Holy Crap! Its nice to know that other people thought it was a great show too.

Two questions:

Why was it taken off the air? I thought it was a hit when it was on.
Do we have a name like trekkies?:warrior:

If you check at www.battlestargalactica.com I believe that John Larocque's BSG FAQ is hosted at that site. It will answer most questions you have about BSG.

As to our name, most of the new mini supporters call us:

"purists"

Do we have a name like trekkies? Hmmm. Some have referred to us as Galacticans.... Not sure there is anything formal though.

Welcome to CF! Wait till some of the guys around here have more of their art posted: They rock!

Why it was taken off the air: too expensive, too touch and go to get an episode a week out (it was 10-12 days of work/episode even with recycled effects shots (often post-production finished the Sat. afternoon before it aired the next night) when normal TV eps are done in 7 days); it was rushed into full series production from having been planned as a miniseries.... and the ratings were only a problem in that it didn't quite live up to the hype (it was one of the most hyped shows of '78 if not ever) as it was a top 20 show and not #1. (the last bit: I just remember a comment like that Dirk made in an interview years later. The schedule rush--Larson commented on in his Galacticon talk. The expense of the show has been talked to death: $1 million an hour in 1978 dollars.)

Hope that helps a bit.

Welcome aboard Commander Cain, I hope that you continue to enjoy it here at Fleets. You won't find a nicer group of people anywhere else.

You know, I never really thought about it before. What do Battlestar Galactica Fans call themselves? Space: 1999 Fans call themselves Alphans, Dr Who Fans call themselves Whovians and Trek Fans call themselves Trekkers. For Battlestar Galactica, Galacticans would seem to be a natural choice. Capricans and Colonials I guess would work too. Any other suggestions?

What do we call ourselves...

How about MUSHIES! :D

Welcome to Colonial Fleets Commander Cain! Everyone is wonderful here! :)

I know this is a bit wordy but, to paraphrase Patrick Macnee, I like to think of US as:

Galacticans would make sense, really. Star Trek fans are called Trekkies. Star Wars fans are called Warsies. Galactica fans are Galacticans. Besides, the last two syllables of Ga-lac-ti-cans almost sounds like Ga-lac-tin-cans, which could be in referrence to cylons. :cylon:

 "Galacticans" :warrior:

btw, the preferred terminology is "Trekker". :tos: :D

That depends on who you talk to. :tos:

I have never heard Star Wars fans refered to as warsies. In news reports they are always refered to as Star Wars Fans. I guess it's agreed that Battlestar Galactica Fans are Galacticans?

Both terms are valid because there is a difference between a Trekker and a Trekkie and each set of people prefer the one that applies to them. I prefer Trekkie.

I like Colonials but I can deal with Galacticans =)

AlphaAce, Artemis,

Thanks. I was under the impression that "Trekkie" was used in a slang or unkind fashion when referring to Trek fans much like the "purist" term is used when referring to BSG "Continuation" fans. Sorry for any misunderstanding. BTW, what IS the difference between "Trekker" and "Trekkie". I wasn't aware that there was any official difference.

It is my understanding that a Trekkie is the stereotype nerd that walks around with pointed ears, is 35 and lives in his parent's basement and buys anything that says "Star Trek" on it. A Trekker is a person who loves Star Trek but has a career and a happy social life.

I believe it is the other way around. All the people I know that take it extremely seriously prefer the name Trekker and are offended if you call them a Trekkie. That is why I call myself a Trekkie, I have never considered having my ears changed and I don't own a uniform. :D

Artemis November 5th, 2003 04:09 PM

Hey, maybe we should go to a Star Trek site and yell 'Trekker" and see who answers.

Muffit November 5th, 2003 04:14 PM

An even better question - if you're not into Star Trek, are you Trekless? :D

:tos: :muffit: :tos:

thomas7g November 5th, 2003 04:20 PM

Actually I remember before the movies a trek fan HATED to be called "Trekkie".

So all those in costume and such are probably Trekkers. And those who are causal about it are Trekkies.

Though the movie "Trekkies" may have blurred the lines somewhat. :D

Commander Cain November 5th, 2003 06:48 PM

It would indeed appear the lines have been blurred.LOL. I've always been one or the other.( Whichever one has the job and a life.) But more importantly, I'm now a Galactican!!! I'd pay real money for a Viper. Does that make me weird? Or does being both a Trekkie/Trekker and a Galactican make me weird? Oh well, I'm already married. She's stuck with me.

Battlestarians, Galacticans, BSGers,

In the end, people should not be all in a twist about lables. Call yourself whatever makes you happy and be yourself.

Galactican!

How about ambrosia-holics?

OK in answer to your first Question, it was taken off the air because it was to expensive to make, that is what the studio would tell you anyway. Basically they did not think about how much the show could potentially make in syndication.

In answer second question. Now we do not have a name like Trekkies, but am sure you will be glad to learn that a lot of BG fans are also Star Trek fans. In spite of us lacking a name, we are as loyal to the original concepts of Battlestar Galactica as Trekkies are to Star Trek. Sci Fi Channel and Bonnie Hammer probably have a name for us though which is not likely to be that flattering, but do we care? No.

Charybdis November 6th, 2003 06:54 AM

Hey!!

35 and a nerd?? Bijou, you just described me!!!!! But there is one major difference, I'm not into Star Trek at all so I guess I'm a Trekless nerd!!!!

But call me a Galactican, a Colonial Warrior!!!!!

November 6th, 2003 06:19 PM

There is nothing wrong with being a nerd. The richest man in the world is a nerd. I guess I was talking about general perceptions rather than realities. I think it is great that people enjoy more than one show. Personally, I love just about any sci fi show that was made in the 60s and 70s!
