Same Name Pain

What’s in a name? It’s just a label we use, that spawns recognition, association, and connotation in others. But can it be used unwisely?

What if I had 2 children, a girl and a boy, Heather and Scott. If I call Heather the girl will come, because years of association tell her I mean her. But what if I now name her brother Heather too? Think of the confusion!

What if I have a piano in my home, and my children know it as “piano”. One day I decide to rethink it, and remove 6 of the strings and stretch them across a guitar. That’s all well and good, but what if I call the new guitar “piano”? It has elements of the piano. But it looks, sounds and feels like a guitar. Once again, my children will be in a muddle.

Lastly, what if my children have a favorite male dog named Rover. We have him for years and grow to love him deeply, faults and all. He passes away and I buy a cat instead. I decide to call the cat Rover too, in spite of the fact it is a girl and not a dog at all. Will my children accept that?

We never stop being children, our shells just adapt and wither. And we still associate a name with what years of mental categorization have done with it. How then can we adjust to something totally different being Battlestar Galactica? How can we adapt to a womanizing man who is now a woman?

There’s nothing wrong with being creative and different. That’s what makes the world so incredibly varied. It’s just that something different ought also to be named differently. In that way, we can come to accept it for what it is.

Affectionately and respectfully,
Muffit

I agree Muffit. If it were ONLY the gender changes I
might not be so MIFFED. But the BABY KIlling, the
wanton sex, The 'dr baltar' writhing in the chair due
to a CYBER CYLON Babe giving him a hand job in his "MIND",
the fact that they "REIMAGINED" BSG into 90210 in SPACE
............NOW THAT is going to far.

Muffit,

Your stories are always right on target! You have a gift, and I do mean gift, for relating a common item or occurrence to the show. Your stories resonate with common sense, for those who are willing to stop, for a just a moment, and think.

You are a voice of calm amidst a chorus of calamity.

I had two childhood friends. Their parents had married and now they were brothers. They both were named Dave. :D

It was confusing but funny. :D

Hi Thomas! LOL. I believe there was also a television show in the 80's about a hotel (but I just can't remember the name) with a trio of brothers, and the lead brother would always introduce his siblings as "This is my brother Darrel, and this is my other brother Darrel" :D

Muffit August 20th, 2003 08:34 PM

Really? I have beaver joke fans??? COOOOOOOL!!! :D

Ooh, I'll have to come up with some more silliness :)

Incidentally, I got my daughter to sit down and watch a Monty Python episode one day, and you'll never guess what happened! They introduced the show opening with one of those MGM lion circlets, except inside the circlet was -- a BEAVER! My daughter and I were in hysterics (it's a big joke at our house). Actually, we later found out it was a vole not a beaver but it SURE looked like one!!!

Beavers...

I dont' know if this qualifies for beaver jokes, but does anyone remember a show (I think it was a special on HBO way back in the late 70s) called "Disco Beaver from Outer Space?"

It had this huge beaver (a guy dressed up in a beaver outfit) who did really strange things. It was really weird and I hardly remember it. It had some off-color jokes and skits and things...

shiningstar August 21st, 2003 08:48 AM

Nope I don't remember that. but if it did have OFF COLOR
Jokes there was no way my Parents would have alloed me
to watch that.

repcisg August 21st, 2003 09:54 AM

Oh Beaver Beens, who let the Beavers in!
