A Project

I still have to make a few tweaks, but here's a project I've been working on in After Effects:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ni770lxdx3M

Here and there I'm going to be picking at this project bit by bit. No idea when it might be done. Might be 3 months, or 3 years.

Anyway, my intention is to take The Saga of Battlestar LP and marry it with animated scans from all the marvel comics. Nothing really seemed to directly correlate with the MacNee narration in the beginning, so I decided to make the opening sequence with conceptual paintings.

Thats really cool!
It reminds me a little of the comic strip intro from the Flash Gordon movie. Really cool!

Do more! Longer slower shots would be welcome also, because this just makes you want to see more.

Did I mention that was cool?

Love it! What a great way to bring those paintings to life! Can't wait to see more, and with Galactica music will be perfect.

Thanks much! Also, thanks for the input.

I'm kind of constricted by the audio of the Saga record, as far as how much I can do in what time I have allowed. I'm definitely going to make some tweaks here and there to make some of the animation a bit smoother.

But this will be it for the conceptual paintings. The rest will be done with scans from the Marvel comics.

Thanks much! This animation will be married with the portion of the audio of Patrick Macnee's opening narration on the Saga LP.

Re: A Project

Well thanks much!

On another note, does anyone have any idea what font is used on the cover of the board game?

http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com...-boardgame.JPG

I'd really like to use that font because it has a great comic book feel to it.

And any suggestions anyone might have on how these particular animations I have posted could be improved would be greatly appreciated.

Re: A Project

Well I finally got caught up on other stuff so I was able to get back to this. I haven't done much more, mainly just refinement of the earlier animation and adding the audio.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQRJkC1gEq8

Incidentally, I was able to find an unopened copy of The Saga of Battlestar Galactica record. I recorded it it straight from a turntable into my computer as a .wav file as opposed to the inferior mp3's that are floating around, so it's probably the cleanest recording out there.

I tried to upload them here but I think the files may be too big. In any case, I'm not an audio guy, but if anyone would like those .wav files from me to run through an equalizer or something let me know and I'll figure out how to get the .wav's to you.

That is just SUPER! Love what you did there. I know its a lot of work, but what a great way to bring the Saga of Battlestar Galactica to life. Hope you're able to do more soon.

Re: A Project

Thanks for the nice comments!

It's proving to be a lot of work mainly because of two challenges I'm facing.

First, is my outdated version of CS3. As you can imagine, doing this kind of animation requires a lot of clone painting. A copy of CS5 or newer with content aware would significantly lighten the work load I think.

Second, is my aging Windows XP computer, coupled with the old CS3 master suite. I would like to complete this at least at 720p. But I'm getting significant trouble out of Premiere Pro any time I try to render something 720p with more than 10 cuts, or of a significant length. I think it's a memory issue, so I'm probably staring down an upgrade which is probably long overdue anyway.

It's kind of interesting though, given that the Marvel comic book artists weren't restricted by the cinematic technology of the time, they had more creative freedom in drawing their panels. What I'm finding is that when I force these odd shaped panels into the 16x9 frame, I get some interesting compositions that I would have not thought of otherwise.

I any case, this project is actually turning out to be a valuable learning experience for that reason.
