question for Michael Fairies

Just how was Apollo's absence explained in the Desanto script? This is a point that has always bothered me. It seems everyone knows this but me.

thomas7g December 30th, 2002 09:30 PM

oh...I think he's joking...I think...

jewels December 30th, 2002 09:33 PM

Pfffft! MIA again

Um, he's too good a pilot for that.

Why does everyone always want to kill off Apollo! Aaaargh! Starbuck needs him. Apollo needs Starbuck. They are like right and left arms on the same person when they are in a jam (and when are they NOT in a jam?).

Studio enforced script twists are just hooey!!!!

Damn it, Darrell! Must you spoil everything? Now Tom is giving me heck...er, hi everyone. :)

Cugel, to answer your question (and do note: Scooter can also answer this):

Apollo's absence was never explained outright in the script. In fact, his name is never mentioned, which is exceptionally strange given the interplay between Adama, Troy, Starbuck, Boomer, Athena and others where it could have been brought up.

At the end of the pilot episode, the audience is shown the Cylon homeworld. And there is a major twist as someone emerges from the shadows... Someone's silhoutte who looks like Apollo. ;) Why he's with the Cylons is something which is explored within an ongoing series. There's a major character arc for him and others. Personally, I was disgusted with the idea when I first heard it -- and still am, to a minor degree. The more I was told, the more I understood why this was being done. I don't have to like it, but there's a reason for it. DeSanto's BG Universe had 3 and 5 year arcs, a la "Babylon 5." In time, they would have played out if there was an ongoing series. Unfortunately, he never got the chance.

Btw, Sheba's absence (and that of some others) wasn't explained either, although I know where she is in the DeSanto BG Universe. It's a royally cool idea which isn't new by any means. It begs to be seen on-screen. If Moore/Eick's production airs, I'll say what it was. Someone will need to remind me at that time.

Michael,

As one of the writers on the Callisto/Gold Squadron Board, I'll remember that and WILL remind you!

For those who might not know, a brief synopsis of our story is that Commander Cain captured an automated Cylon shipbuilding platform at the outskirts of Cylons space. Since it was mobile, it was steered out of Cylon space, and a new Battlestar was constructed based on the most modern design, with some Cain tweaks (remember that Galactica was 500 yahrens old and had been modified a number of times). When the Pegasus had to respond to a Colonial distress signal elsewhere, Cain left a skeleton crew to take the nearly completed ship on its way. The platform, after being booby-trapped, was dispatched into deep space in hopes that it could be salvaged someday.

Once the new, partially outfitted Battlestar finally located and joined the fleet, Sheba was named Commander by Commander Adama, shortly before his death. Numerous Warriors have joined our Battlestar over time as we work to protect the fleet and locate Earth.

We are currently completing Chapter 21 of our Lite RPG story. I'm far behind on completing the synopsis (after scifi.com wiped out a number of chapters), but the first few chapters are currently available at

Apollo on the Cylon Homeworld? Would make for some interesting plots.

Especially since he doesn't stay there after the ongoing series begins. DeSanto's team did have some fascinating ideas.

Btw, do know: Commander Cain has died within the DeSanto universe. We don't see the death; we know it has happened. (He isn't recast, either.) In fact, it is directly implied that events (from what could have taken place during a second season timeframe) are responsible.

It's interesting to consider: The DeSanto team planned to recast Adama. Cain isn't, though. (And both actors, Lorne Greene and Lloyd Bridges, are deceased.)

Bear in mind: DeSanto's team had different ideas about Cain's and Sheba's fates than Larson did. You'll hear me talking about the Larson/BG second season details in the next few weeks. They're different and wholly unrelated.

How's that for a teaser?

I don't suppose Tom DeSanto is going to release his Galactica script to the fans in some timeframe in 2003 should Moore's BG be well into production this year? This being the 25th anniversay you thing all parties once involved in any Battlestar revival has news, or spoilers they like to reveal to the fans. And would come forward with something to share with us fans in the 25th year of Battlestar Galactica.

Can't wait for the Second season outline Michael. Tell me did Isaac Asimov add his ideas to this planned second season in time? Or was he just called up to be on and didn't add any details to Galactica unproduced season!

KJ
