"Because they are Evil...."

Quote:

One of the first questions we had to ask ourselves was what is the nature of the conflict between the Colonials and the Cylons? Why do the Cylons feel so strongly that they must wipe out humanity that they're willing to chase them across the galaxy? I mean, they just wiped out several billion human beings, their civilization is destroyed, and the Cylons are far and way the victor in their struggle, why chase after a few thousand humans running away?

'Well...... because they're EVIL.'

That didn't seem like a very satisfying answer during the original run and it seems even less satisfying now. To just write it off to Cylon 'programming' also seems rather dull and vaguely Borg-like. No, to sustain this kind of never-ending threat requires a deeper motivation, a more profound conflict between two civilizations.
here is another point that Moore does not get. You have to have a better knowledge of the series to grasp it. Why the Cylons act "evilly" is said many times but it isn't painted on the hull of the Galactica in big letters.

The reason the Cylons hate and want to exterminate mankind is "philosophy." Man and machines have inherent differences that are incompatible. The crux of the conflict is Order & Chaos vs Freedom & Oppression.

Humanity in its best form embodies FREEDOM. The Cylons actions to control all living things is Oppression. And FREEDOM by its very nature opposes OPPRESSION, and thus the Cylons.

The Cylons see a universe filled with CHAOS that needs ORDER. They see themselves like white blood cells within the body of the universe purifying the body of chaotic elements. FREEDOM is CHAOS. Therefore mankind is a disease to them that must be brought into ORDER. Or eliminated.

FREEDOM vs ORDER. Man vs MACHINE. The two cannot exist together. Battlestar Galactica is about the war between the two. And our side is in trouble.

That is your profound conflict Mr. Moore ;)

And the opposite of war is not necessarily peace.....

And the battle between Good and Evil has NOT EVER been BORING. Look no further than the Lord of the Rings...

I know I plan on helping fill Peter Jackson and his cast & crew's pockets for their faithfullness to the fantasies of a certain English professor...

And it is OK to have the men do the warring and the women the mending of the warriors, sometimes that just best expresses our "Mars/Venus" innate male/female gifts and talents. But if a female wants to be a Warrior or a male a healer – let them be, the only real way to combat sexism is to let each individual chose their path. Making Starbuck a girl defeats that.
