"Tombs of Kobol" book for February 2003
 

The reprint of "Lost Planet of the Gods, Parts I and II" are coming from iBooks in February 2003 (U.S. and Canada) & March 2003 (U.K.). Apparently, iBooks will keep publishing BG books as long as there is a market for them, from what I've heard.

The book is available here in the U.S., here in Canada, or here in the U.K. for preorder, among other web sites/book stores.

This reminds me a lot of the cover art from the Marvel supersized adaptation edition of "Saga of a Star World." (Another webmaster pointed this out as well. Thanks, John H.) I have the Marvel publication at home; the artwork for "Tombs of Kobol" seems more detailed than the art from the original Marvel publication. Any thoughts?

This is good news iBooks is a POD (Print on Demand) system. The book is not printed until an order is placed. As long as the book is in the iBooks catalog it can be ordered. So, cool!

This also means we are one step closer to an online version, I haven't tried one of their online books yet, some venders do a better job than others.

This is exactly the same art from the Marvel Super Special that I've got. I think there's another version of the same scene but just line art (not painted).

I remember the original cover art from the book(first print). They had a picture of Starbuck and Apollo shooting their laser pistols at the Cylon raiders flying overhead. On the back were Vipers shooting at the Cylons. I gave the book to my cousin.

Some one from 3DG could have done a far better job on the cover art.
I wonder if there is a way to submit art for some of the upcoming publications....

This book is worth having, for those who are interested in Kobollian history and mythology. Even if the direction where Robert Thurston took it is not your favorite, it's still a stimulating read.

The artwork I have seen here from the artists is far Superior IMHO. Too bad one of them couldn't do a book cover. David Kerin's picture The Powers That Be is excellent.

Without giving anything away, I'm curious what you mean?

I just got this book today. I watched the old series as a youngster and grabbed novelization of Saga of a Star World/Gun on Ice Planet Zero last month and just started reading it.

I'd like to continue to get the books but only if they're good, authentic expansions of the episodes keeping true to the original backstory/concept/scripts. Mostly I'm interested in backstory of the Cylons and Kobol. Iblis always intriged me as well.

I was glad to see in the opening of Saga that Cylons were not just androids but armour-wearing creatures.

I'm curious about Hatch's novels but haven't seen them in person. Could I get a recommendation on one to start with or at least a general overview of his imagining of the characters?

I tried reading the leaked RDM script but couldn't keep my food down beyond Husker seeing his old Viper. I'm not opposed to a remake but I am opposed to completely throwing away the elements I believe fans could agree upon that gave BSG its uniqure flavour such as the bond with Adama and Apollo, the Mormon-influenced religious elements and so on. I'd like to see any remake to be more of what made BSG good and memorable after all these years not what RDM has scripted. I believe you can do a Sci-Fi show, BSG especially, on par with good contemporary drama series like The Shield or The Sopranos and not defile the basic tenets of the original show.

There are two threads here that discuss Richard's books. One is 'Richard's Books' and the other is 'Rebellion'. I've bumped them upwards so you could find them more easily. Enjoy.

The Tombs of Kobol has some tidbits about the history of Kobol thrown in here and there that enrich the story and make us feel like we’re in there with the characters, IMHO. There’s more in it about Colonial history than in any other novelization, with perhaps the exception of the first. Don’t expect lengthy details, though; they’re really just tidbits.

Whether the books are good or not is really a matter of opinion. Many BG fans don’t seem to have a good impression of the novels – even though they sometimes don’t seem to remember much about them, either.
I don’t know why this is. Maybe they were expecting straight retellings of the original episodes, which the novelizations aren’t, although they don’t usually stray too far away from the TV script. Maybe somehow the characters didn’t translate from the screen to paper in a way that’s acceptable to them. Or maybe it’s because the novels don’t give any closure to the events of the last episode, The Hand of God, just as the TV series didn’t.
I’m the exception, I suppose. As a whole, I liked the novels very much, although the quality does vary, epecially according to the writers.
The first one, Battlestar Galactica / Saga of a Star World, and the third, The Tombs of Kobol / Lost Planet of the Gods, are two of the best novels, while the second is not as good, IMHO.

As ojai suggested, there are several threads about them in the forum. As to where to start, how about starting at the beginning, with Battlestar Galactica: Armageddon? :)
