Anything New On Glen Larson?
 

Been busy hanging out on a couple of Mego forums and building up a collection of Mego figures, so I've been a little touch on what's been going on with Larson and the talk of a BSG feature film. Figured I'd check in and let the folks know I'm still alive and kicking.

KJ talked to him this summer. He still wants to do a movie.

I would not get very excited about Glen Larson doing a Battlestar Galactica movie, his Knight Rider movie has had the same info posted since 2003. http://imdb.com/title/tt0384254/

Glen and Tom still talk quite a bit about a continuation. It's safe to say it's on Larson's shoulders.

Do they still talk? I think that is what bothers us is the wall silence I wish we could all get some periodic updates even “nothing new today”. Glen can be an obstacle, Glen can be help but it will take a DeSanto type to do it…do it right.

I think, unfortunately for us, this is one of those movie deals that will just one day pop up in Hollywood Reporter or Variety as a newly greenlit project with X studio. It will go mostly quietly into production and once it is mostly in the can, only then the marketing blitz will begin.

I just think that's the more standard "public knowledge" path of most movies.

It would REALLY be nice of them to throw us a bone... and I mean a real bone at that!!!

I think it could go either 2 ways. In a few years either Universal will approach Glen with some money saying they want to buy the movie rights (If he really does own them) So that they can give the project to a certain somebody that will base the movie on that persons version of Galactica that has nothing to do with the original ,

Or Glen would become number 1 in our books if he tells Universal to pound dirt, then turns around and does the movie with Tom Desanto and another big studio. Then you want to see a fan base get motivated.

There is a third option . It might happen as Tom Desanto said with a huge hit under his belt he might be able to take on what ever project he wishes to next and we all know what that is. The only thing is that Universal seemed to be stubborn about Galactica in the past so who knows just how much proof they need to have in order to know that Tom will make this another Star Trek franchise

I also have a feeling Tom is reading this and is just itching to comment on this but feels it's best that he doesn't at this time.
Call it a hunch.

It does seem as though someone somewhere has something against this property. Almost as if at every turn decisions were made against any progress moving forward. It's weird.

I'm not asking you to give up spook secrets but how do you know?

Keep in mind that Hollywood is not about creativity, artistic or otherwise. It's not even about storytelling.

It's all about how a certain green ink smells. The more green ink, the greater the smell.

Place a project in front of them that smells of green ink, they're interested. If it smells like a lot of green ink, they're very interested.

Of course, that's a minimal outlay of green ink in exchange for a huge income of green ink (they know you've got to spend it to make it).

It's all how you present it. Remember, even 40 years ago, at a time when suits were willing to take some chances, Roddenberry had to invoke "Wagon Train" (then a very popular show) in order to sell Star Trek.

One of the biggest hurdles is the mistaken idea that Galactica should be pulling in the same kind of "nostalgia dollars" as Star Wars or Star Trek.

The popular conception of Galactica by the general public is that it was a low-rent bastardization of Star Wars. Add to that the penchant for Mr. & Mrs. America to constantly get the show mixed up in their 1970's-addled minds with Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, and you can see why the show doesn't get an iota of the respect it deserves. :/:

I can't count the number of times people wanted to talk to me about "the little "biddie-biddie" robot with the thing around his neck" "from Battlestar Galactica". And when I wore my colonial outfit, more than a few times I got referred to as "Starbuck Rogers".

The idea that creating a continuation that ran concurrently with the new show would "confuse the brand" is preposterous. The brand is already so confused that it would make no difference! People are confusing it with an entirely different show! :errr:

But I think that expectations are far too high... for ANY nostalgia brand. The thing is that when ONE nostalgia property has a kick-arse return with $$$, that raises the bar for ALL nostalgia properties. They don't get judged on their own merits, they get judged against the successes and failures of dissimilar properties. :cylon:

The brand confusion excuse is pure felgercarb, when one considers that one arm of Universal has four different DVDs on sale that bear the name "Battlestar Galactica" and that it's licensing department has been granting licences for products based on both shows.

Many of us envisioned the show as one of the big SF franchises with a number of spin-offs, sadly that isn't to be.

I guess NBC Universal has some sort of aversion to making money.

The property has had just about as many different "takes on it" as the MICRONAUTS. They're still trying to get the Micros back out there, but nobody knows what to do with it.

There have been at least three comic book continuities, the original show, the new show, and Kobollian Lords know how many fan fiction stories. Not that most folks out there would know about that.

It CAN be done. Just have to find the right people to do it.

And Universal said they didn't want Tom Desanto to do a Cartoon based on a continuation because it would confuse the fans. Well, with all those versions out there now, I'm pretty sure a continuation won't confuse the fans now or at least the majority.

The bottom line for me is that no matter how many fans we think original Galactica started off with 2 years ago, it still had a fan base and an updated well done continuation would have reached out to the original fan base, make new fans and bring the curious in that just remember the name but not much more then that.

One argument against a continuation was that if you have a continuation, you end up starting off in the middle of the story and new fans would be lost but all stories can have a story that took place before it so in a sense, all stories start of in the middle of something because there can always be a story that came before so a continuation in my book wouldn't turn new fans away that never seen the original. If anything, it might make them curious enough to watch the original or even buy the original DVD box set because it would complete the collection . The trick is to make any new story that continues the original, Some what non dependent on the original story. Like you said, there is a way to do it and if Universal wanted to take a chance and give it to Tom, someone who loves the franchise as much as we do and is willing to do something that reaches new and original fans, I think we would be hard pressed to get a better production.

I wonder if anyone watched GINO and were disappointed because they left Twiki out. :rotf:

I saw several posts on a few different boards 2 years ago asking why Twiki wasn't in the mini. I thought that was funny. I remember telling my friends in my car. One screamed "what?!" and the other (who was reading a book in the backseat) burst out laughing.

THAT's EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

The general public can't figure out which one was Boxey and which one was Muffit and which one was Twiki.

In fact, they can't figure out that Muffit was a Daggit and not the other way around.

Don't even try to explain that Muffit was actually Muffit 2.

These characters are almost the only things they DO remember from the show(s), but they can't tell you which show or what character. Its sad, really. Its not that difficult.
