TUTORIAL FOR PILOT PAINTING
Are all students and novices present? If all are present, we now begin our lesson on colors and the differences with DeSantos Warrior suit. :salute:

BlueSquad2001 September 10th, 2006 05:55 PM

The pilot that accompanies the kit, has of course a new and unique bunch of differences. 1st being that the helmet, while maintaing it's traditional egyptian styling, is more angular and the colors are slightly different. 2nd being the flight pressure suit, has a series of tubing running all around in various places that allows comfort with cooling and heating fluids that flow through them. These tubes also assist in "G" forces that the pilot will encounter upon entering planet atmospheres, as they constrict and change the flow of blood and pressure to the pilots brain. It is constructed of a dense ( leathery ) material.
In this 1st pic, the pilot is coated with artists oil color, being burnt sienna.
This is left to dry for about two days, and will really assist in attaining the leathery look.

Following that, we mixed the following colors, in equal parts.
1. Model master Acryl (tan)
2. MM 4672 Brass
3. MM Insignia Yellow
And with a filbert brush though small, began painting the helmet, after 3 light coats I was satisfied of the result. Then I applied an extremely thin wash of flat black and allowed this to flow into the recesses.

Next we added a tin layer of Model Master Acryl 4674 Leather to his suit and this enhanced the rusty leather look underneath.

Oh Yeah...and then we added these 2 colors to the helmets dark areas.
1/2 gloss black and 1/2 sapphire blue. The edge along the top of the helm, begins from the top sides and goes all the way to the other side.
It looks black, but trust me, it's more glossy midnight blue.

Next, we begin the laborous task of adding flesh tones, and the brass coloring to the eagle on top of the helm.
The colors and lighting is definately not what I was wanting in this pic, but i'll post some tomorrow so that you all can see the different hues and tones in the flesh.

BlueSquad2001 September 10th, 2006 06:45 PM

Okay this is going to take some explaining.
http://i5.tinypic.com/2qvbkgo.jpg

The suits center is MM Acryl Leather with a few drops of tan added.
The tubing is Gloss Black wit and equal mix of rust red, to give it a dark gloss.
The wrists and forearm area is the same mix as the suits chest area.
The Brass, Insigniaa Yellow, and Tan mix was delicatly applied to the side lines in the helm.
A mixture of sapphire blue and grey is mixed up and applied to the suits sides, and forearms as well as to the cool oval pressure patch areas on the shoulders.
And last but not least, an equal mix of Semi Gloss Black and Flat Rust was used to paint in between all of the ribbing, and all of the shoulder areas, very similar to TOS Jackets.

And another pic. :D

BlueSquad2001 September 10th, 2006 06:55 PM

Oh and by the way, this is just a color guide. I actually have detailed pupils whish are hard to see in the pics as well as cool and warm skin tone variations. I would like to suggest that the suit be weathered slightly, using blk washes to pich out the details and add smudges. Desanto's pilots suits will show wear, and that they have experienced combat.
I'll attempt better pics witht he daylight tomorrow, as some of these do not do justice.

BlueSquad2001 September 10th, 2006 07:46 PM

Mike I don't care what they say about you on CNN, mTV, My wifes sewing club, NY PD, the FBI and over at Suzies barnyard playhouse dot com  ......your ok!

Question.....Did Coby make all the parts you needed or just the masters - did you and terri ever figure out the kit box situation and will the kits have box art at all?....not that the box art really matters.

The pilot looks awesome!!! THANKS for the schooling!

I'm just about to join my Terri in the hay, so I'll answer quick.
As far as box art is concerned, we are considering different ideas.
No Coby cast numerous parts.
And Coby could've made the master, but unfortunately I did'nt have the kind of money it owuld take to pay him to master the kit. Heck I did'nt even have the money to master the kit! :rotf:
And I think you're Okay ;) too Viper 04 (Troy) :D

Viper 04 September 10th, 2006 10:51 PM

Hay.....hmmmm I'm gonna have to try that :D

I did mean just the few parts that Coby's been doing for ya....the cannons, canopy and wings. Did he have to make his own masters of those three parts or did you send him your original masters? and is there a rough eta on the wings?

We're finalizing that soon.
Nah, he did'nt need to make new wings or cannons, just fixed a thing or two that I noticed at the last second. :D

Viper 04 September 11th, 2006 07:37 AM

Viper 1 September 11th, 2006 12:18 PM
