Disney Pulls Out of Third "NARNIA" Film

Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media have confirmed that for budgetary and logistical reasons the Burbank-based studio is not exercising its option to co-produce and co-finance "THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER" with Walden.

The Hollywood Reporter says the third installment was in preproduction and set for a spring shoot for a planned May 2010 release. The development puts the participation of the talent attached in doubt, adds the trade. Michael Apted was on board to direct a script by Steven Knight. The key players of the second installment, "Prince Caspian" -- Ben Barnes, Georgie Henley, William Moseley and Anna Popplewell -- were to return for the third film.

Walden has a strong relationship with the C.S. Lewis estate and will shop "Treader" in hopes of finding a new partner. The most likely candidate at this stage is Fox, which markets and distributes Walden fare under the Fox Walden banner.

Any partnership on a "Narnia" movie will require a substantial investment, however. "Caspian," which filmed in the Czech Republic, Mexico and New Zealand, cost $200 million. The first film, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," was shot mostly in New Zealand for $180 million.

I hope that this is just a minor speed bump and that a partner will be found which will enable the Narnia series to continue, even if it were direct-to-dvd.

I'm glad they are still going ahead with it. For Disney, having the first one make an unbelievable amount of money pretty much spelled out their withdrawal in a way. So backwards. The second one still made a whole grip of money...well beyond what most films rake in. It didn't make as much as the first one though...boo hoo.

Hopefully this way it'll start off making about as much as the second film which will spell success to anyone other than Disney.

When you posted this, I hadn't realized that Fox rode in to the rescue.

Fox to develop 3rd 'Narnia' film

Mon, Feb 02, 2009
AFP

LOS ANGELES - TWENTIETH Century Fox is to co-produce a third film based on C.S Lewis's 'Chronicles of Narnia' books, one month after Disney's withdrawal placed the franchise in doubt, reports said on Thursday.

Daily Variety reported that Fox would join Walden Media in developing 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader', which faced an uncertain future after Disney's decision to pull out of the project.

Tentative plans are for the film to be shot later this year in time for release in 2010, Variety reported. Fox and Walden will share the cost for the film, estimated at $140 million (S$210.9 million), Variety reported.

The two previous films in the series 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' and 'Prince Caspian' have grossed nearly $1.2 billion worldwide since the first film was released in 2005. -- AFP

If it were just Fox at the helm I'd be worried, but I think Walden has a pretty strong hand in the equation. I think it'll turn out great in the end. I do hope they pursue keeping the cast on board. It would be a shame to see any of them go!

You do realize that Peter and Susan won't be in Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Edmund and Lucy, along with their cousin, Eustace, will be the featured humans this go-round.

Re: Chronicles of Narnia - Voyage of the Dawn Treader

I do indeed. However they show up in both "The Horse and His Boy" and in "The Last Battle" in quite pivotal roles. Some continuity would be nice. I was mainly referring to Lucy, Edmund, Caspian, and Reepicheep. I'd hate to see any of those characters portrayed by different actors in Voyage. It is one of the most beloved books in the series and it deserves some kinship to the other films.

New Writer for Third Narnia Flick

Michael Petroni has come on board to write the next installment in The Chronicles of Narnia franchise - The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Petroni’s credits include The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, Queen of the Damned and the upcoming Sarah Michelle Gellar thriller Possession.

In Voyage, Lucy and Edmund return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace where they meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader. Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world.

Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley are reprising their roles as Caspian, Edmund and Lucy, respectively. Will Poulter (Son of Rambo) is joining the cast and will portray Eustace.

The film found new life at the end of January when Fox agreed to finance the project. In December Disney decided it wouldn’t be continuing to develop the fantasy franchise. When the third film was setup at Disney Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) was writing the screenplay.

The film is being directed by Michael Apted (Amazing Grace, The World Is Not Enough), with Mark Johnson and Andrew Adamson producing. A summer start date is being eyed for a holiday 2010 release.

'Chronicles Of Narnia 3' filming underway

Wednesday, July 29 2009, 11:38am EDT
By Tim Parks, Entertainment Reporter

Filming on the third instalment of The Chronicles Of Narnia is underway in Queensland, Australia.

20th Century Fox agreed to produce the third movie after Walt Disney Pictures pulled out of helming future films based on the C.S. Lewis novels due to budgetary restraints.

The studio and Walden Media announced that principal photography has now begun on The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader. The movie will centre on two of the Pevensie children returning to the enchanted land with their cousin Eustace, where they embark on a trip across the ocean with Prince Caspian.
Georgie Henley and Skandar Keynes will reprise their roles as Lucy and Edmund Pevensie, while Ben Barnes will return as Prince Caspian and Liam Neeson will again voice Aslan the Lion.

Michael Apted will direct from a script by Michael Petroni and Richard LaGravenese.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader is scheduled to open in cinemas on December 10, 2010.

I found the entire set of audio books and the collected version of the chronicles together on sale for $20.00 at my local Barnes & Noble. The audio books are great! Michael York, Patrick Stewart, Kennether Branaugh all read!

I hope so. I read the entire series, for the first time, in the summer-fall of 2007. This story, as I recall, was rather fun. They tended to island-hop, with one adventure after another.

I'm looking forward to it. :)

This is definitely the adventure story within the Narnia books. I love the whole story, and increasingly look at it as one big one as opposed to separate books. "Voyage" has a special place in my heart though.

I'm interested in seeing how they handle the monopods!

The Dawn Treader looks awesome. Something to look forward to next year for.

Another format for the entire Chronicle is an awesome audio drama that's been around awhile. It's done in the style of the BBC's radio theatre, but was produced by group in the states.

Re: Chronicles of Narnia - Voyage of the Dawn Treader

We went to see it last night .....

very enjoyable but, at the same time, bittersweet ... kept very close to the book.... darker than Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe but, not quite as much as Prince Caspian....

... amazing to see how Lucy and Edmund have grown since LWW ...

(The ship is beautiful as is the scenery, the effects are well done and serve as an enhancement to the story, as opposed to being the "big draw". The duel between Reepicheep and Eustace is a hoot !!)

...highly recommended for anyone with even a passing interest in Narnia.
