View Full Version : Cylon Raider dimensions?
Gundamhead

Hello,
I'm new and looking for information. I build models. The new series got me hooked again.
I've been revisting some kits from the original show. I am searching for the dimensions of the Cylon Raider for a diorama I am planning. I've only been able to find a reference of 52' for a wingsapn. Is this correct? I haven't been able to find anything other yet though.
Thanks,
Joe

This is the only info i can find .
A standard Raider is 45.28 feet (13.8 meters) long, 63.4 feet (19.3 meters) wide. Raiders have a standard crew of three Cylon Centurions who split all duties during combat as gunner, pilot, and the lead Centurion as navigator.

Welcome to fleets, Gundamhead!
52' is actually pretty close to what I think it is. The filming miniatures were never really composited well to scale, so measurements of shot footage should be a last resort. They were also not exact to the full-scale set pieces that were built, but that's really the best we have to go on for the raider. If you look here http://www.cloudster.com/Sets&Vehicles/Cylon/Cylon.htm ,
you get a feel for how big the miniature is supposed to be.
The full scale cockpit is mounted on what look to be 4" casters. Taking that, and extrapolating the distance between the two "vertical" struts on the louvers, then taking that to the shooting model and determining the size of the same location (one of the struts is missing, but you can see where it was glued on, and so place it properly), I come up with a 54' wingspan.

I love this article, mainly because I admire any such research, and because it demonstrates the futility of using screen-shots for judging scale. The issue is that early fx didn't do too well at filming and then compositing ships into shots in scale.
The only really solid feature that we can know the "real" size of are the launch tubes, and even those may be slightly larger than suggested here (a few shots of vipers in the tubes follows the viper completely out across the threashold, and hints that the tube mouth may be larger than the tube interior), which pushes the length up around 6,000 feet again...what the model builders always said it was.

I tend to agree with that myself .
Do you think that the walls of the tube could be extendable to accomodate larger Vipers or modifide Vipers , I know it not canon and has never been seen Its just a thought that i have been playing with .

Thanks guys! This helps me out quite a bit, and as long as my memory of the old Monogram kit is correct.
Actually, if you happen to know the wingspan on that kit, (I'm pretty sure it was around 12") it'd be much appreciated. I haven't been able to snag one yet.
The reason I'm getting around to, is the little Joy Ride toy Viper I picked up a little while ago. It measures up to 6.75" putting it pretty close to the Monogram Cylon scale (if my memory isn't too faulty).
Anyway, I had originally thought the goofy little toy Viper looked pretty good, and might be close to 1/48. It is about 1/54 if you go with the Viper being 29'. Anyway as I ramble on...I tore the toy Viper apart, and it is put together with a cheap crazy glue, and seems to be polystyrene. I've started cleaning up the toy's parts, and decide to correct/detail a few little things about it. Turns out it's got a bunch of potential as a nice model with some work. The pilot though looks to be about 1/100, why such a huge diverence? As I got into it, I thought this is pretty fun, he needs a adversary in (close) scale. Then I got to thinking, I bet the old Raider kit is pretty close. Which ultimately led me here, and to you guys for info.
My secret plan is to have a few Vipers being killed/pursued by a Raider. I just wanted to be a bit different by marking the Vipers as maybe a squadron from one of the doomed battlestars. Maybe use some shnazzy green or blue striping instead of red. Maybe a planetary based Viper squad. I dunno yet, but I like being a little different.

Cool Gundamhead! I once took the cobra decals from a G.I. Joe bad-guy toy and used them on a Monogram viper, with red striping. It turned out really cool, even if I do hate that model. Unlike it, the Monogram raider is actually very close to the shooting miniature, and any differences can be considered canon, since they were actually used for the hanger scenes in THOG.
When scaling the viper, remember its dimensions are known. The construction plans in the BSG blueprints place the viper at 28’2” in length.
Taranis, it looks to me that there is a bit of space beyond the wing tips, meaning that the wings could be slightly longer. That being said, I always assumed that any variants would either require a refit of the launch bay/tubes, or would fit the existing structure (more likely). Configurable tubes…interesting idea. Let me think on that one for a bit.

Why thanks. :D I spent some time checking around for any model pics but I couldn't find any. I know there's gotta be some here someplace.
I did check out your CG work. Also the other members. Very cool stuff. I like the variations of Vipers and Raiders that I've seen. I had a idea for the Battlestar that I'd like to do, but the guy who's sending me the kit I need is taking his long sweet time...

There is a great Gallery here and has a number of great pictures on ships from the series . :salute:
Thanks for your kind words .. I am still new to CGI art and am having fun sharing it with you all.

Well then, if it's some Galactica models you might like to see, look here.
http://www.starshipmodeler.com/gallery/gallery.cfm
At the bottom of the page there is a option to select a category to view. Pick Battlestar Galactica, and you will be shown about 30 different models finished by various members of the site. none of them are mine personally, just thought some BSG models might be popular here.
That site is part of Starshipmodeler.com, which is a haven for any fan of sci-fi kits. There is a great amount of info, from sci-fi filming model pics, to reader kit pics, to references, and a great forum. If you've ever wanted to build anything sci-fi in the real world, it's people are always willing to help, like the way I've been treated here.
Anyway, hope you all enjoy it!

Look at the detail ...
some facts from the builder.
The model is the same size as the original filming miniature and detailed with many of the same model kit parts, she took three years to complete and cost about $3500 materials, model kits, paint etc... she weighs 70 pounds and is constructed just like the original, a wood frame with a steel pipe core, sheet plexiglass and styrene as well as ALL the hard to find model kit parts that cover her surface, she has been to several show and contests and will be on display again this year at the imagination expo in las vegas.
oHH I wish I was good a models and had $3500 to build it

My advice, is not to be afraid of trying a model. I've seen people who've never built before turn out great work within a couple of models. The work you do to those CG models, apply to real models as well. It's not a long stretch, and I would think easier than say me trying CG. Like I said, if you ever want to give it a try, just ask the members on that site. There's whole sections and articles on the 'how to' for beginers or those returning after a long absenece.
I really love that Galactica too. I just don't have the space!
