View Full Version : What would you rather have: G80 or Sci-Fi DVD release?

OK, So my girlfriend and I are discussing what we'd have if we could only have one of these two released on DVD.
Bearing in mind that we watch BSG dvd's all the time, and we're MASSIVE fans of the original series.
So, both the sci-fi offering and G80 aren't exactly top of our wish list.
So as this is the section for purist BSG fans like us, we want to know what you warriors would spend your cubits on first?
We actually concluded that we'd rather have G80 than the new series in our collection to watch over and over. :/:
So for us, even a few monentary glimpses of the glory of TOS, outweigh a whole series of the new show.
How depressing is that?

G80.
Because it not contradict the original series, because it is possible that TOS did lead on to G80, and because it would include 'Return of Starbuck' which is priceless....

"Experiment in Terra" is probably the only TOS episode that I'd rate lower than most of the episodes of this serie. Galactica 1980 deserves its sorry reputation as one of the worst science fiction television series of all time.
At the risk of shilling my own website, feel free to read Allan Cole's priceless comments on "the abomination" of 1980.

I honestly can't see how Galactica 1980 "honored" the original series' legacy more than Moore's Galactica series, but I guess it's all point of view.
Let's face it, Galactica 1980 was an awful show. It deserved to be dropped.

So this is what we've come to? So desperate to compare old and new, we're now throwing Galactica 1980 into the mix.

To be honest both series pale next to the original and only BSG IMHO.
There are elements of both G80 and Sci-Fi's effort that I like.
But hey, I also watched War of the Worlds (the 90s tv show) Codename Eternity, and Third Wave.
So I really will tune in to almost anything with a sci-fi theme.
I'm saying which would you rather have the DVDs of, so which would you get the best replay value out of?
And we've concluded that as blowful as it was in places, enough magic rubbed off of BSG onto G80 for it to beat Sci-Fi's show hands down.
Which really makes us wonder how they could allow the new show to be so mundane?
Where's the magic in Sci-Fi now?
I guess it wouldn't look so sorry if it wasn't for the inevitable constant comparisons to the original show.
I think that compared to other current shows like the atrocity that is Enterprise, Sci-Fi's BSG looks fine.
I must be getting old, nothing new is as good as the old stuff :(
Even Andromeda seems to be on the decline. Poor old Gene Roddenberry.
I really hope Sci-Fi's writer's have some major revelations before they write the new series of their BSG.

LOL!!
If only ;)
Its certainly not about direct comparison of the shows.
It's more a case of which of the two red headed step children of BSG would you rather babysit?
We were actually rather suprised that we both decided upon G80!
I think thats a terrible judgement on how far Sci-Fi have failed to capitalise on bringing us something we've waited 25 years for.
I love BSG, and I wanted to love the new series. I watched it with the kind of anticipation of a kid at xmas! Sadly, to continue that analogy, I felt like the kid that wanted a bike, and got loads of clothes. There's something to be said for getting nice new threads, but its not a fracking bike! (Not even a flying one ;))
My mrs feels the same. Instead of this being the best tv sci-fi since TNG, its so uninspired that its actually made us warm to G80!!
Who'd have ever thought that G80 would not be at the bottom of everyone's list of favourite shows named Galactica?
Good news for Troy and Dillon! At this rate they could end up getting fan mail ;)

I'll go with Sci Fi. Mostly cause I have "Conquest of the Earth" on VHS, and that's pretty much G80 without all of the bad stuff.

I have "Conquest of the Earth" as well. It was the first time I had seen anything from Galactica 1980. You said that all of the bad stuff was missing.....I don't think so...!
I was *this* close to buying Galactica1980 on VCD at eBay, but all the memories came flooding back. I think that the only episodes that I would care to own would be "Galactica Finds Earth" in it's orginal form and the same for "The Return of Starbuck"
As for TNS, I've seen every epsiode one time and I'm watching on SciFi, but I wouldn't venture to buy the series on DVD. Twice is plently.
I own the DVD for the miniseries and the TOS DVD set - we'll just leave it at that.
Best,
Bryan

G-80.
A few items there I'd like on DVD for captures so I could model them ;)
...and I could watch Jamie too... :D

Well, the compleatist would want it all.
This has piqued my curiousity. If there are a few G80 torrents out there, I might just have to take a look at how often they have been grabbed.
G80 might be more popular than anyone suspects.
As bad as G80 might look to me today, it can still make me smile in a good way. And I remember the excitement I felt when I learned it was going to air, only to feel a sense of deflation when I saw the Dr. Zee character.

Aha!
At the time of this post, the first fileshare site I went to offering G80 had 9 geeks uploading and 29 geeks downloading "Night...Cylons Landed."
G80 lives!

They cut out the Super Scouts, which, to me, was the bad stuff :D
Though I still think they could have cut out Dr. Zee too.

G80
The Return of Starbuck would be worth a series boxset price to own. My VHS tape will not last forever. And the Cy/Starbuck dialogue is PRICELESS as someone else noted.
The only value in the SciFi DVD for me would be the lowdown part with Katee and Dirk in Starbucks. Something about that just makes me smile.
*notes she just mentioned 2 things with Dirk* Hmmmmm. maybe I had a favorite after all? No. much better to not compete with Tracy, Ojai, Flamingo Girl and the rest of the gals around here. Safer to just appreciate his way with comedy. ;)

As I get older, I'm becoming more of an Apollo fan. I thought I would never reach that place, for Dirk Benedict was a cigar-smoking god. But I'm belatedly making that shift. So, finally, I've moved into Richard's column. Dirk's the guy I wanted to be, but Richard's character was more like the guy I am.
Similar attitude on the new series. I find Lee's character interesting to watch and I like Jamie Bamber, to boot. Some of the best bits with Olmos are the unspoken dialogue between the two men.
I'm sorry, Galactica 1980 is trash. I have soft spot for "Return of Starbuck", but the taint of Dr. Zee and any connection with that series just ruins it for me.
I remember finally getting copies of them on VHS about 10 years ago - they have not improved with age. Note, in "Conquest of the Earth" they edited out Billy Joel music that was in the original pilot version from the car deck.

Are you talking about when Jamie first meets Troy and Dillion? My copy still has that song in it.

May I also pose a hyperthetical question to Fleets members ?
If a DVD was made of JUST the 'Return of Starbuck' with alternate footage to the Dr.Zee scenes. Would we the fanbase, accept it as 100% canon ?
(DVD to also include Deleted Scenes, Dr.Zee Deleted Scenes, 'Making of', Dirk Commentary etc as with typical releases)
Any responses ?

Since I own ROS on VHS and don't watch the tape nearly as much as Jewels I vote TNS.
See it this way, TNS gets massive critical acclaim and massive ratings some of which it deserves. Galactica 1980 got a lousy critical response and horrid ratings all of which it richly deserves.

well if I had to spend my last cubit on one of the two I would buy G80. Yes, it was kind of lame but it is way better watching than what Scifi is offering!

The "Experiment in Terra" telemovie edited out all the scenes with the Star Child. It's a strange hack-job but I prefer that version over the Galactica 1980 version.

They can't do that Spike ! It would contradict the storyline of the Second Coming !!!
It os odd that the storylines of G80 have mostly been disregarded, yet that one episode is the basis of nearly all the Continuations !!!!!!!!!

I've never seen the second coming trailer. In the RH books, Starbuck is back with the fleet, or at least in the one I read.

I would pay real money for a complete, unabridged set of all TOS, including G80.
I would be unlikely to buy G80 on its own, except at a discount special rate, (to be completist) but would happily have it as part of a definitive collection:
You know, the one we all dream of, the one with ALL the footage, ALL the telemovies (that we never saw in Aus) ALL the theatrical releases (all versions) and the ALL the TV broadcast episodes (all versions), and of course any interview and commentary extras. to fill the final disc
R4 gotted stiffed on the R1 content, even if you paid the premium fro the Cylon Head Packaging. The DVDs are different to my VHS tapes, which are different to the original network broadcast. I can only prove the latter with memory, and a couple of audio tapes of eps I made in desperation becasue my parents didn't have a VCR back then
The copies of TNS that my brother in law is burning to disc off his hard drive recorder is all that I want from that show. I wouldn't part with hard earned cash for it. I was given a copy of the mini at Christmas by a well meaning rellie who thought it was a missing ep/ new release of TOS.
BTW its interesting to see the curse of several different broadcast versions has been visited on TNS . If it went to DVD, the TNS fans will be wanting both the Brit and The US versions, the missing scenes etc etc.
In this it just may be that when some TNS fans walk a mile along that weary road trod by so many TOS fans before them, they may begin to understand some of our pain. For some, that will be when open dialogue is possible.
Cheers,
Lara
