I am playing with the idea for the fanfic of introducing a family name (surname) to the TOS BSG universe
The main tine I don’t partially like about the new BSG is the Earth names i.e. William and so on.
Anyone have any ideas on that, in my fan fic I would like to make the surname private, as if the surname is holy or only used in formal, legal occasions and not military use at all.??? Just something im playing with.

Nice list skippercollecto. Since names of a character in any Television show have a particular meaning.
I'm sure several on your list would imply something about Adama's father wouldn't it? Those who have read the bible know about "King Saul" and his feud with David. Telemachus was the idealistic son of Ulysses adventurous and all. Solomon a wise king but fell from grace later on in life. The others in your list; Ramses, Gideon, Jonas, Seth, Ezra, Marius, zebedee, Theseus, Lear, Micah, Sulla, Marcellus, Raphael, Sebastian etc.
Are all names you've touched upon from mythology, fiction and biblical references. Congrats you got a brilliant taste for names.

Novel idea! something i'm sure the original series would have touched upon. Unlike Ron Moore and the dumb sheep that follow him. You've got it alright.
My i suggest some names for ya. Like Gilgamesh, Cyrus, Seleucus, Noah, Nestor, Xerxes, Cestro, Agrippa, Caesar or Joshua.
And avoid names like; Nero, Merlin, Sennacherib, Set, Wotan, Zeus, Odin, Marduk, Anubis, Belshazzar, Poseidon, Sapa, Pluto, Horus, Loki, Baldur, Nebuchadnezzar, Arthur and Osirus.
(And yes i did a lot of digging, all those names come from all kinds of sources: kings, mythological gods, generals, fiction etc if you want knowledge on them just pm me and i'll give you their background o.k. :salute: )
Remember there has to be a particular meaning behind the name.
Best of luck to you on your fanfiction BG piece Potemkin!

I personally like the idea of taking the father's first name as surname. Thus you get Apollo Adama - Apollo from the line of Adama.

thanks for the suggestions Lord Kingjason, some names i have from web site on names, I m looking at ancient Greek names and meanings, plus names from legends. Greek, Roman, Egiptions ETC,
I would like to have suggestions for the names, I will send you the ones i like in a day or so and let me know what u think.

Peter
I was play with that to and I think that the ancient hebrews use that system? judah ben joeph? i not al that sure.
so you could have Apollo of Adama? that type of way? so we would have to develop a first name for Adama? :)
you could use Gen for the following generation
Commander Adama
....................Adama
Apollo gen Adama
Athena gen Adama
Zac gen Adama.
this was of the top of my head the 'Gen' word could be changed.

I'm afraid I am going to have to disagree with this idea of another name. That is part of the character of the original show, and how can we object to some of the major changes in the re-imagining, to then do they same to our own fan fictions and Continuations ? It would be hypocritical, and I feel wrong, to do so....
Anyone have any ideas on that, in my fan fic I would like to make the surname private, as if the surname is holy or only used in formal, legal occasions and not military use at all.???
We saw Apollo and Serena's marriage, Serina's death and the military ceremony of Kronos etc etc. No extra names were used then.
The Klingons also have just one name, but say 'Worf, son of Mogh' That is sufficent for them. No offense everyone, but I am totally against this idea, and so many others were as well, when everyone was flaming MooreRon for using this idea....
Lord Kingjason - I'd be interested to know a brief history of Cyrus, but I would suggest that that name not be used, as it was the full name of Cy from 'Return of Starbuck' so it would be inappropriate to use it again for Adama's father. It would be interesting to know the significance of that name in its application to a Cylon character.

I understand your concern ernie, but i will be only using it as background info, inpart for another project im working on. I personly like the idea that in the culture the family name is not mentioned it has become private. perhaps because of the cylon treat. to protect the familys they are fighting for?

Well there are two such Cyrus' names and i meant the first of these two.
Cyrus The Great. Also called Cyrus the elder was founder of the ancient Persian Empire. His anestors were Vassal of the Median kings ruling Anshan near the Persian Gulf. Cyrus had the title of "King Of The World" a wise and generous ruler who permitted the jews to return to jerusalem from captivity in Babylonia. His greatest acomplishments were, overthrowing his wicked grandfather Astyages after he feared his grandson would indeed overthrow him, thus he set out to have him killed. Cyrus formed an army of Persians which helped him to overthrow his grandfather and make him king of Media and Persia. And later became leader and ruler of Lydia by defeating Croesus 546 B.C.
Most of all Cyrus "The Great" was famed for defeating Nabonidus, a king of Babylonia.
Cyrus "The Younger". A Persian prince. the son of King Darius the 2nd, ruler of the Achaemenid Empire. Cyrus served as a satrap (governor) of a province in asia minor. Darius died in 404 B.C. and Cyrus' older brother Artaxerxes 2nd became king. Cyrus revolted against this and tried to seize power of the throne for himself. and led 30,000 troops including more than 10,000 greek mercenaries into Babylonia where he fought his own brother in 401 B.C. at the Battle of Cunaxa. Artaxeres forces defeated Cyrus The Younger's and Cyrus was killed, along with his generals. His surviving forces fled their story is told by the greek historian, Xenophon.
Sapa. Inca history: Incan Sapa meaning: "Emperor" title. But was also an individual name title used outside the emperor title, by Incan people.
Belshazzar. Son of Nabonidus of Babylonia. The Book Of Daniel in the old testament stated, Mysterious handwritting appeared on the Palace wall to Belshazzar, warning of "THE FALL OF BABYLON".
Xerxes. The 1st. King of Persia.
Marduk. Or Bel Marduk. Patron God of Babylon!
Sennacherib. King of the Assyrians. famed for destroying Babylon at one time.
Seleucus. Former General of Alexander The Great. became king of Mesopotamia and founded a new capital, Seleucus. just before babylon became under Parthian control in 200 B.C.
Nebuchadnezzar. A grand generation of the kings of Babylon used this family title!
Gilgamesh. Babylonian/Sumerian epic legend. told in the Epic Of Gilgamesh.
And as a quick run through.
Anubis, Horus, Ptah, Nephthys, Ammon, Tefnut, Aton, Thoth, Re (Ra), Set and Osirus. Egyptian deites! (will'll cover them later)
Loki, Baldur, Thor, Bragi, Ve, Vili, Odin/Wotan. Norse deites!
Loki. Raised by the frost giants although an adopted son of Odin. caused his brother Baldur to be poisened.
Thor. Norse God of Thunder. famous for his powerful Hammer, when thrown always returns to his hands.
Baldur. Brother to Thor and half brother to Loki. killed by Loki's trickery.
Odin. Ruler of Asgard and the Norse Gods. Once sacrifest one of his eyes for the power of wisdom, to he could rule well! got his powers from Runes
Wotan. Another name for Odin.
Ymir. First of the "Frost Giants" in Teutonic/Norse mytology. came from nothingness or a great emptyiness where heat and ice met.
Buri. Created Bor in Norse mythology
Bor. Father of Odin and his brothers Ve and Vili
Bestla. Giantess of Bor, i.e. wife!
Bragi. Norse God of poetry.
Nero. Roman Emperor, ruthless and nasty to the core. Excuted many christains at the arenas of Rome, burned many more others. (will cover him later too in greater detail)
Agrippa. Marcus Agrippa, Famous Roman General. Also held the rank of Admiral at sea and was famed for defeating the combined fleets of Mark Antony and Cleopatra who eloped together after Caesar's death.
Was more or less was the right hand of Gaius Julius Caesar "Octavian" who became Emperor Augustus of Rome, Rome's first Emperor!
Well a little explanation of the names. Will finish up tomorrow! might even add some more.

I agree, soory you do not ernie. but how else are you to understand the family from the person if the surname is only used as a defining point if brought up, by one "Colonial" to another?
I remember somebody once joked on the websites, what would happen if you yelled "Apollo"! Would five 'guys' come running?
Food for thought. Also Ronald D Moore, was wayyyy of the mark with his version it doesn't bare thinking about. The man got rid of one of the most interesting aspects about Battlestar Galactica, it's almost laughable in some respects.
Although i hope you like fact i dug up the the Cyrus name info for ya. i do the rest later.

I've been compiling that list for more than two decades now. I started it in college in the early 80s, and then when I joined some BG fan clubs (through snail mail) and wrote some fan fiction, it was easy to just go through the list and find a name that I thought appropriate if I introduced a new character.
The much-longer lists, of both men's and women's names, can be found at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/felgercarb/
in the files. You can read the lists if you join the group.
You are welcome to borrow any of the names. They are all in public domain.
I once sent a similar list to Richard Hatch in a vain attempt to convince him that the names he and his co-writers were creating for their novels were just awful. His made-up ones are un-euphonious and too Klingon-ish or Wookie-ish. And the "regular" names he was using are too contemporary (Jasmine? Diane?--if I were writing a script for a 21st century TV series they would be fine, but they're not for Galactica).
I remember in high school that my English literature teacher once mentioned that Charles Dickens collected names and kept them for future writings. I think that Stephen King must do the same thing.
Mary (whose name is Hebrew and it means bitter or rebellious)

Oh, one other Biblical idea:
Enoch
there isn't a lot about him in the bible, but he was credited as someone who "walked with God", so a righteous, spiritual person like Adama would have had similar roots for a father. If I remember right, Enoch was either Noah's father or grandfather. Generations overlapped each other up until Noah's time & the flood.

this is great. I these idea flying around. some great names and thanks for the link skipper  .
I started to think (I know Incredible, but I do it sometimes) about the Family name and how we could look at this.
Apollo is from the HOUSE OF ADAMA.
Adama is from the HOUSE OF NOAH.?
Starbuck is from HOUSE OF DAMITERY?? (spelling wrong, think process error)
SO what you could have is.
Apollo meets say President Adar.
Lt Apollo walks quickly through the great hall, around the hall are many people
all going about there daily dutys. But Apollo has no time to look around, to admire his peoples accomplishments, to admire the soaring glory of Capricas
capital building, the place where Laws are argued and past.
This is a very important day for his family, his father Adama is been formally honoured with membership into the Council of the 12. as Apollo move quickly glancing around him, Apollo didnot see the group of people walking the the
same direction. the Inevitable happened, they collided into a mass of body and
painfull indignation.
Lt Apollo looked up, shaking his head as if the clear it. people start to get painfully to their feet, Apollo while helping one man to his feet begain to notice
the large crowd of people. all centered around one man who was softly chuckling
dressed in all white from his boot to his head.
Apollo stood stiffly at attention, cursing his bad luck and wondering idly if Starbucks latest run of bad luck was infectious. before him stood the single, most
important man in human space President Adar!!
'sorrry sir!?' Apollo stamered. :errr:
Adar looked with humour at the young warrior in front of him, standing resplendent in his officer Blue uniform, noting a familiarity in his face.
'whats is your name Lt?' Adar asked quitly.
Apollo dreaded this question, he will have to tell, you don't say no the the most powerful man in all the colonies. :wtf:
'Lt Apollo....sir :salute:
'What house?...!'
frack thought Apollo grimly.
'The house of Adama' Apollo answered.
something like that??

Potemkin - that sounds much better. Worked for Dune, and the Klingons....
KJ - Reading about Cyrus was interesting, although I don't see why that particular name was used for a Cylon?
I remember somebody once joked on the websites, what would happen if you yelled "Apollo"! Would five 'guys' come running?
Well in real life maybe, but there is a very simple solution to this in fictional productions, and that is not to introduce characters with the same name ! Of course I realise this would be impossible in the real world, but in fictional writing it is much easier....
Also, can I just ask people if they are still writing towards the animated fanfilm idea that gathered so much pace on another thread a while ago ?
Thanks again KJ,

Thanks for the kind words Jewels although i feel i'm not as sharp as i once was and i have to rely on several of my old history books. I was always interested with mythology and was raised on the bible or got the bed time story of alot of things from the bible as a kid from parents and very religious Aunt's etc.
In school my friends figured i knew so much about Dinosaurs? Then again alot og things you know as a kid fade over time if you don't practice it. After Jurassic Park came out, who cares if you friend is super knowledgable, you'd prefer to see the movie instead.
Anyways. Did some more digging and came up with several names.
Alexander. Yep Alexander The Great. conquered most of the civilised world before he was 28 and cried that he had no more lands to conquer. I had an idea to use this name, in my "Season by season outline" and still do.
Rather fitting name to give to a young 'blonde haired' proud ambitious Colonial Warrior in any fanfic!
Ham. Son of Noah, laughed at his father when he became drunk and pityable. Arrogant and selfcentred.
Quetzalcoatl. Aztec God. God of the winds and protector of the arts.
Huitzilopochtli. Aztec God of war
Tezcatlipoca. Aztec God of the Sun.
Tla'loc. Aztec God of the rain.
Chalchiuhtlicue, Aztec Goddess of the running water.
Tlazolt'eotl. Aztec Goddess of pleasure and guilty love.
Orpheus. Went into Hades to search for his dead wife Eurydice. charmed the underworld spirits so much they offered his wife back under the condition he not look back until he had left the underworld. He broke this just as he was leaving and looked! And was torn to pieces by his own foolishness.
Menelaus. King of Sparta and huband of Helen who became Helen of Troy. Waged a bloody war on troy for 10 years after Prince Paris of Troy stole her away. Menelaus saw his wife again after the war was over and they went back to Sparta afterwards.
Eros. Greek God of love.
Theseus. Greek hero famed for killing the feared and dangerous Minotaur!
Perseus. One of the many mortal son's of Zeus. Danae was his mother. Wasn't a demi-god unlike Hercules but was still a son of zeus none the less.
Remus. Brother of Romulus who formed Rome. Was said to have been killed by his brother, but it's just a theory as no one's ever been sure of this.
Sirius. "The Dogstar". Brightest star seen from Earth.
Sisyphus. Notorious trickster who even outwitted and deceived the Greek Gods. (earning their wrath) founder of the city of Corinth.
Zeus once sent Thanatos (Death) to punish Sisyphus for revealing one of Zeus' love affairs. Sisyphus beat Thanatos in mortal combat and bound him in chains. While in chains no one died, those that did "escaped" death. Ares freed Thanatos and gave him power over Sisyphus. Sisyphus then told his wife Merope to bury him without the usual funeral rites. After he died and went to Hades the underworld and saw Lord Hades himself god of the underworld. He begged to be allowed to return to Earth to punish his wife for failing to give him a proper burial which Greeks honored the most in 'death'. After gaining his release, sisyphus failed to return to Hades.
After a long while, the God Hermes captured Sisyphus. And placed him under control of Hades, ruler of the lands of the dead. Sisyphus was forced to push a large round stone to the top of a hill. each time Sisyphus was about to push the stone over the summit of the hill, it pushed him back down to the bottom of the hill.
Doomed forever to do the same task each day!
Laius. King of Thebes.
Hector. A 'Prince' and Greatest hero of the city of Troy. One of many sons of King Priam, including his Brother Prince Paris. Killed by Achilles greatest hero of Greece.
Ajax The Greater. Hero of the seige of Troy. went mad fter he wasn't awarded the armor of Achilles of Greece after his death. (the Armor went to Odysseus King of Ithaca) after this happened Ajax fell onto his own sword.
Ajax The Lesser. Another warrior at the seige of Troy with the same name as Ajax the greater. Called "Lesser" to define the two. said to have suffered a nasty death as well.
Aeneas. Trojan Prince. saved many trojans after the destruction of Troy. hero of virgil's Aeneid;
Ammon. One of the Egyptian gods.
Bacchus. Greek God of wine.
Ixion. Thrown into hell by Zeus. Condemed to be forever bound to a flaming wheel, everlastingly revolving.
Atlas. Like his brother Prometheus was one of the last of the "Titans" race of giant gods that were parents to the Olympians. That were still around after they fought the gods of Olympus led by Cronus. After they lost the war with the Olympians, Prometheus was chained to a rock and Zeus had a giant Eagle/Crow eat out his liver each day. But Atlas was condemned to support the sky forever onhis shoulders. once tried to trick Hercules to supporting the sky with his godlike superhuman strength, but Hercules tricked him back into supporting the sky once more.
Boreas. The north wind.
Notus. The south wind.
Minos. King of Crete who demanded young men and women from Athens. Be thrown into the maze of the Minotaur to be devoured, as an annual tribute.
Midas. King of Phrygia was given a favor by the gods. he asked that he could turn anything to gold. but when this happened to everything he touched even his food. He prayed for the power, to be taken away.
Mars. Roman name for Ares God of war.
Jason. ( ;) ) Greek hero and leader of the Argonauts, who after many adventures won the golden fleece with mysterious powers.
Castor and Pollux. Sons of Zeus and Leda. Transported to heaven and became constellations. Like Perseus, they strangely weren't Demi Gods. But were sons of gods themselves.
Neptune. Roman name for the God of the Oceans and Seas.

The first two names I am giving you are semi-canon:
Did you know that, in the novelization The Young Lords (based upon The Young Warriors script), that Starbuck's foster parents are named Doreen and Gawr?
In that felgercarb website I mentioned previously, these are some of the folks that my rather obsessive mind came up with:
Sheba's mother--Drusilla
Athena's best friend--Isolde
Tigh's sister--Twyla
Dillon's parents--Solomon and Amethyst
Cassiopeia's roommates when she lived on Caprica--Frederica and Wendell

Excellent info on those names! I have very little knowlage of this subject, and what I do have comes from films like 'Clash of the Titans' and 'Jason and the argonauts'! I've heard alot of these names used for character names, or ship names over the years, but never knew why. I thought Ajax was just a Dutch football team! Really interesting stuff. :)
If you do not mind, I have a wee question regarding a few names.
First off Zac. This name sounds like a 10 year old egghead kid in a Disney movie, and souds out of place along side family members Adama, Apollo and Athena. Is there any Zac from history of mytholigy? Could it be an abrieviated nickname from a longer name with meaning? Or is it just a 'Kid Brother' name?
And finally, has the name of Adama's wife ever been mentioned? I can't recall hearing it.

PS- Skipper mentioned the name Zebedee(BOING!) earlier. Surley they're can't be a Zebedee outside 'The Magic Roundabout'?

Ajax, heh i don't know why but the Dutch always pronounce it as "I-ax" even the though the correct way is "A"-Jax, etc.
Thanks, i use to be quite good at discussing this at school. mythology is interesting a fasinating subject matter to study, Battlestar Galactica was tapping into the areas of mythology, biblical references and fantasy wayyy before the Wachowski Brothers did the same with the Matrix franchise.
Far as Zac goes, it my guess it's from the names in the New Testament. The biblical 'Zacharias'.
The archangel Gabriel appeared to Zacharias and predicted that his wife, Elizabeth would bear a son named John. A.K.A. John the Baptist.
Although it should be stated several persons in the biblical figures have the same names! there was another Zacharias who actually encountered Jesus Christ.
Hoped that helped some.
Far as names go i got another. "Zeno" The Greek philosopher. i.e. known for his unsolved puzzle, as in Zeno's Paradox! What would happen if the irresitable force met the Immovable object.
And of course there two more Zeno's another Zeno is of Elea another Greek philosopher and Zeno of Sidon a Phoenician Philosopher.

Yes you are right Lord Kingjason, he did say that and I have forgotten it,
But could it also be generic.?
Like
We could be called the sons of Adam
And the daughters of Eve?
thats If you are a religious person?
And Iblis could be just lording over Adama giving himself more mystic and power. or even trying to flatter adama?
just a thought?

these are indeed the type of names i will be using, moore version using the present name styles are big let downs, for me anyway.
it could be a earth ship in 3 hundred years time, rather that thousand of light years away, from a diffreant culture. like William Adama, it sounds great but to close to home to be almost alien?

Could it be that Adama is descended from one of the Lords of Kobol???
gmd3d
January 5th, 2005, 08:23 AM
Why yes, that good for me to, the old houses of Kobol lead the way to the colonies,
and another from the house of Kobol (Adama) leads them to Earth.
I would like to see it something like this
There are or were hundreds of great houses
All across colonial space.
Each house is expected by tradition to defend
the worlds they are governing, that’s were the nepotism
comes in with having members of each families serve
together on the one ship.
Perhaps these great families even build the ship that
Protect the colonies, I not saying that they build Battlestars
but smaller ships? .
Anyway the great houses, are the political might of the colonies
And Adama’s family is up there in the top group.
Like President Adar could be also in the group
Baltar another, with the position and wealth
To go and do as you wish.
The exception is the military command that you have to earn
Like anyone, your rank ?
Just a few ideas

Two of the disciples in the new testament were the "sons of Zebedee"
Zac could be short for Zachary or Zachariah (Old Testament (OT) name)
Ila is Adama's wife. She is mentioned and shown in the pilot (Adama holds her photo in the ruins of their family home on Caprica.)
KJ is right about the Adama being of the "house of Kobol" there is something in Colonial society that seems to esteem that lineage above all others, perhaps like the OT tribes of Israel or like the lines of the Jewish Kings (i.e. Jesus was of the "house of David" as both his mother and father's lineage traced back to David. In Jewish prophesy messiah was supposed to be of the house of David, and be born in David's hometown. This is why Herod had all the firstborn Hebrew males in Bethlehem slain after the Magi didn't return to tell him where the newborn "king's" location. He was scared that someone of the house of David would usurp his own line.) I think the Lords of Kobol was a pre-democratic ruling family, pre-establishment of the 12 colonies and that the colonists had a nearly shinto-like ancesteral worship or esteem of them. But that's just my guess.

there is something in Colonial society that seems to esteem that lineage above all others, perhaps like the OT tribes of Israel or like the lines of the Jewish Kings (i.e. Jesus was of the "house of David" as both his mother and father's lineage traced back to David.
yeah Jewels, I like that thinking, people torn with war, and possible the whole culture is geared for war, the family and lineage (i could not think of that word earler).
I also like the notion that Adama is of the highest house's, Adama always carried the feeling of inner strength and wisdom.

And finally, has the name of Adama's wife ever been mentioned? I can't recall hearing it.
BRG
Adama's wife name was 'Ila' mentioned by him in the pilot episode! Once as Adama was looking at her burnt picture frame.
Would have been great if somehow she appeared in the never filmed second season and turned up somehow. Imagine what Adama would do to see his wife again? If the Cylon's captured her and used her as bait to push Adama's buttons etc. Or worse yet if Count Iblis had her and pushed Adama's buttons.
*Sigh*
A second season, what a missed oppertunity looking back 26 years later?
Getting back to the names, i was wondering.
Ramses, Gideon, Jonas, Seth, Ezra, Marius, zebedee, Lear, Micah, Sulla, Marcellus, Raphael, Sebastian
Of these names listed before. who gonna give out a description? I don't want all the fun. i guess it would be only fair to see if the rest of you can dig up the meaning and disposition of the person('s) fictional, mythical or biblical behind the names.
Lear should be easy ( :D ) But i wonder about the names Erza and Micah and Sebastian? Gideon interesting as i know of two.
But i want someone to fill in the others. And perhaps someone would want to find out about some of the ones i've listed and some other new one's i've put down too.
Nestor, Cestro, Arthur, Merlin, Pluto, Poseidon, Caesar, Anubis, Horus, Ptah, Nephthys, Ammon, Tefnut, Aton, Thoth, Re (Ra), Set and Osirus, Zeno, Adonis, Vulcan, Mercury, Aaron and Joshua.

I was the one who posted the long list of guys' names. I don't remember where I found all of them; these are the ones I know off the top of my head:
Seth was the third son of Adam and Eve, who was born after Cain killed Abel.
Sulla and Marius were Roman soldiers (maybe they were generals?).
Raphael is one of the Archangels (and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle). And I believe the nickname Rafe was the name of James Dean's character in Giant.
Ezra and Gideon are from the Old Testament. Gideon had a trumpet; that's all I remember. Jonas is a variation of Jonah, of Jonah and the whale fame.
Mary
By the way, have any of you noticed that many of the original angels' names end in el? I know it means something in Hebrew, but I can't remember what it is: Gabriel, Michael (bugs the heck out of me when parents spell it Micheal), Raphael, Azriel, Uriel, etc.

Here is a list of some (not all) of the girls's names I came up with over the years. I will tell you the origins of some of them, but the ones that I don't explain are from Greek, Roman, Norse, Arthurian or Egyptian mythology or the Bible. And I realize that in the years since I first compiled this list, many of these names showed up in other sci-fi fantasy shows.
Adelheid “Heidi” (In the Johanna Spyri novel Heidi, the heroine's given name is Adelheid--pronounced ad-del-ide)
Althea
Andromeda
Antigone
Antonia “Toni”

Kezia
Lavinia

Veronica "Frony" (Veronica is Latin, and if you saw Passion of the Christ or attended Stations of the Cross, she appears in the Catholic version of the Crucifixion. This name was popular for Catholic girls until the early 60s. I had a great-aunt Veronica that everyone called Frony, which I think was a German nickname for Veronica, and I attended high school with a girl named Veronica. The name all but disappeared from use until last spring, when Veronica appeared in the Mel Gibson film, and now there is the show Veronica Mars and I heard the name used for at least one other teenage TV character. So all of a sudden it's trendy again.)
Viola
Wilhelmina “Billie” or “Willie”
Willa
Winifred “Winnie”
Zillah
Zipporah/Zephorah
By the way, my full name is a very mundane Mary Ann Elizabeth

Changing the subject here a little. These are some names I came up with for ships or cities. Again, feel free to borrow them if you want.

The cities of Kobol (besides Eden)--I'm just theorizing here; nowhere in any of the BG stories are these places mentioned. Perhaps you can use these for your "houses."

With the voice over in the original series making references to the Mayans and Toltecs i thought i'd dig up the cultures through Encyclopedia books. There are alot of unique sounding names and such. but i've yet to delve in and really read the histroy, but if you guys and gals won't mind i'll drop a few things for ya.
Check out a couple of these facts and names.
Kukulcan. Feathered serpent Mayan god
Chac. Mayan god of rain.
Kinich Ahau. Mayan sun god.
Ix Chel. Mayan moon godess. Also of medicine and weaving.
Olmec. Jaguar god.
Tikal. (central Mayan city, now called "Guatemala")
Yucatan, Tula, Teotihuacan'*, Mayapan, Uxmal, Bonampak, Palenque, Copan**, Uaxactun, Negras, Chichen Itza. Mayan cites (*Teotihuacan now Mexico city, **Copan now part of Honduras)
Mayans or Maya as they were known were an American Indian people. Who's civilization produced great works of architecture, paintings, pottery and sculpture. And made outstanding advances in astronomy, mathamatics and developed an acurate yearly calender. their civilization had their own writing methods and made inscriptions on manuscripts and hieroglyphics consisting of many symbols representing many combinations of ideas. They made many controbutions to their arts and sciences before they wereinvaded by the Toltecs in 950 A.D. people from the nothern region of central highlands of Mexico and established an empire there. It was the toltecs that introduced the worrshiping of the serpent god Kukulcan. toltec rule soon collapsed. in the mid 1100's. but in 1500's spanish conquerors invaded the Mayan territory and overcame the Maya's. Today people of Mexico and Central America and South America speak nearly 20 languages and dialects that developed from the ancient Maya language.
The Mayans did build pyramids with a temple on top, consisting of nine terraces. One of the magnificent wonders of an ancient world.

Sulla and Marius were Roman soldiers (maybe they were generals?).
Both became generals, and both also became Consuls (elected Magistrates) in the 2nd./1st Century B.C. Full names Lucius Cornelius Sulla, and Gaius Marius.
By the way, have any of you noticed that many of the original angels' names end in el? I know it means something in Hebrew, but I can't remember what it is: Gabriel, Michael (bugs the heck out of me when parents spell it Micheal), Raphael, Azriel, Uriel, etc.
Gabriel: "Mighty (or strong) is God."
Michael; "Who is like God?"
Raphael; "God Heals."
Azriel; Still looking.
Uriel: "Flame of God."

Olmec. Jaguar god.
The Olmec were a people, not a god. They vanished before the flowering of Maya culture.
Xuitsilopotchtli- Aztec sun diety. Name means "Left-handed hummingbird"

Olmec is correct, i looked it up dude. It's also the name of the "Jaguar God" that the mayans worshipped. Is it possible mayan's adopted this word/ title and used it themselves anyway?.
Does beg to be looked into as we want our information to be correct.
Tell you what, next time i dig info i've found i'll state the source of the information and give more textured details of the name info i come up with.

Make sure they go with the character's personalities and the vessels and such have good names and you'll no doubt shape your BG fanfic to no end.
All the best!

We need to make some suggestions to Richard (and whoever his co-writers are) that he needs to come up with a name for Cassiopeia's baby. You will recall that she had the baby two books back (it's a boy), and towards the end of Destiny that the boy is a toddler, but nowhere does the boy's name ever get mentioned! I don't know if it's one of the umpteem editing errors of the books, or if the writers just never came up with a name that seemed suitable!
So we need to find something to name the boy. I know some of you will suggest silly or smart-alecky names, but perhaps you could also find something that would fit.

I've found another source of male names for you. Check pp. 30 and 31 of the April 11 issue of Time magazine. There's a list of all 264 Popes since 32 AD. Lots of Latin and Greek names. (I'm sure you can find the list on the Internet as well.) The oddest name I can see has to be Telesphorus, between 100 and 200 AD.
The one name that really surprised me was the name Lando in the 10th century. Never knew that Lando Calrissian was named after a real person.
