View Full Version : Freezing My Patooties Off in Tennessee!

Hijole mano!!! As you all know, we recently migrated from balmy California to clammy Tennessee (coconuts migrate?? :D ), succumbing to the internet claim that "the temperatures are within 5 degrees of (California's) central valley.
Yeah, and if you believe that, I've got some lake bottom property on Caprica for ya... ;)
Last night, after a week of bizarre behavior, our heater went out. And I mean WENT OUT. And unlike CA engineers, apparently the south thinks it's OKAY to keep the fan blowing away freezing air into the house even though the fire is out. Hello!!! You're BROKEN!!! Stop already!!! It's frackin' 20 degrees outside!!!!!!!
Needless to say, us apparently "tropical" folks are freezing our proverbial patooties off. Hey, we thought 55 degrees in winter was COLD. Our bedroom is now colder than the REFRIGERATOR!!! Do I look like a carton of milk????? :D
Last night around 11:00 was when we realized it was getting COLD. So I faithfully perused the yellow pages looking for 24 hour service. No luck. (In Calif., if it's not advertised, they don't do it). But apparently here NOBODY is crazy enough (like me, duh) to go without heat in 20 degree weather, so /everybody/ has 24 hour service. How was a daggit to know????
So I here I sit shivering in my office chair, calmly considering breaking up my desk and bookshelves and starting a FIRE right here in this blasted room!!! Ah, I hear the happy footsteps of new furnace unit installers outside my shuttered window (hey! shutters burn too!!! :) ). Thank goodness for men who brave freezing temperatures (for a sizeable return, LOL) so this daggit can have the warm fuzzies! :)
Ooh, wait a sec', I think I see a mirage of Frosty... melt you stupid popsicle, MEEEELLLLLTTTT!!!! :D :D :D

Oh my poor Muffit!! I HATE being cold so badly that I moved from Quebec to BC almost a couple of decades ago. Where once I thought -4 F was too cold I now find 41 F too cold LOL! The most perfect temperature around the house for me is 74 F then I can relax with only a camisole, long sleeved t-shirt, and sweatshirt if it drops down to 21 or 22 then I need my polar fleece pull over as well LOL - can you say wimp??:wtf: ;) :D
Hope you are all warm and snug in no time Muffit (((((((((((((((Muffit)))))))))))))))))

Muffit -
I sympathise with you - as a California raised person, I remember how I felt when I lived in Colorado - I remember my nostrils freezing and thawing while breathing on a cold morning. I also remember the cold knocking out the battery in a brand new car! Now, I never think that any cold weather in California is cold anymore...
I loved your post - it made me laugh out loud when I read it!
Think warm thoughts!

It has indeed been weather here that has tested my frosticles.
But it will change soon, I am sure. A few good cold nights. Maybe a good snowstorm, then a few warm days in between them all.
Just wait until an ice storm hits though. Ice weighing down the power lines until they break. Then the heater repair 'droids will not be able to help, and it will be time to throw another anitque on the fire.

Thank you so much, Potemkin, Rowan, Gemini, Darth and Dawg!
We daggits aren't much for cold weather - our joints rust ("oooil caaaan!"), our ears stick, and cold puffs of air breathe out of just about everywhere :D
Why couldn't Dr Wilker put in a space heater while he was at it??? Hey! "space" heater -- I cracked a funny!!! :D :D :D

If it is some kind of gas heat, you might want to familiarize yourself with how to disable the safety in case power goes out.

Muffit, my dear furry one, I know how you feel. I went to the craft store this morning for some supplies for a project that I am working on and mind you now its only a 15 minute walk from my door to the craft store just a few blocks from here. It was so cold today that my hands and face were frozen when I got home. I was bundled like fracking Nanook of the Stinking North too! Course its only in the high 20s or low 30s here!

(In fact, my BISCUITS are burning, LOL!!!)
Yes folks, kind hearted Tennesseans to the rescue of this poor defenseless (and noticeabley icicled) daggit! I called at 8:00AM, they arrived at 9:30, and by 3:00PM we had a brand, shiny new 3 ton gas/AC unit, justa churnin' out the warm fuzzies!!! 'Course my checkbook is none too happy about it, being we just moved in and nobody /mentioned/ it was pining for the fjords...... ;)
Oh well, c'est la guerre, n'est'ce pas??? At least this poor little daggit won't be getting frostbitten patooties tonite!!! ;)
Thank you all for your kind words  and wish our iron giant a long and happy life... :D :D :D

Those modern units are dependent on power.
The old ones can be rigged to burn without any current on the saftey shut-off in a time of crisis.
Perhaps a backup generator?

Seriously though, thank you Darth ;) You are so right, it is such a good idea to have some kind of backup in case of an unforeseen power outage. I will look into it and see what we can do...

Well, it is definitely something to concider in a small town.
A few hundered cubits on a small generator, and a little wiring work to make sure you can power the heat pump is a prudent measure.
It has been almost a decade since a massive ice storm hit. But when it did last, it was bad.
Power lines down, took weeks to restore. Massive damage from falling tree limbs. The small rivers just south of you lost a lot of canoe traffic since they were still clogged in the spring.
It is just warm enough here to let precipitation fall as rain and just cold enough for it to freeze quickly. Snow is fun, but ice is dangerous.

has some photos from the last one. Apparently the worst was in 1951.
Sometime in the mid 80s, there was a nice storm that I missed while living out of state that left 2 ft snow drifts for several days.

I remember seeing the pictures on the national news.
I just hope some of the snow we are going to get on Monday is still around for Xmas day.
