This is tricky math that will mess with your head like it did mine.

This must be done in your head only.

Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000
Now add 10. What is the total?

Did you get 5000 ?

The correct answer is actually 4100.

Don't believe it? Check with your calculator!

I sit here and add it on paper and it comes to 4100 every time, and then add it in my head and I get 5000 every time!

Totally whacked!

I should have commented *after* trying it. In my head and on paper I got 5000

You sure you got the instructions right? :)

Are you adding an extra '0' to the 40, 30, 20, 10 ?

That might be why you're coming up with 5000.

I know.

All I meant was that if one pictures "1000 + 40" as "1400" and so on then, one may arrive at an answer of "5000". It's how you "see it" in your mind.

Um... my brain must be different I got 4100 in my head - and I just woke up and I have a massive headach! But that's a good thing you wouldn't want me making mistakes whith math when calculating dosages for injections now right?;) :D
