Some things just don't translate right.

In the new Gunbuster2 anime the best pilots are considered "Topless". That does not mean they are shirtless. But here the japanese have translated our english word to mean "at the top of the list". There is no one above that person. They are peerless.

Or in anime..."topless"

Assuming that's a subtitle, I'd have thought "matchless" or "peerless" would get the meaning across more clearly...

Although I should sue for the misleading thread title...no tentacles... :D

The show is actually a sequel. The first was called Aim for the Top: Gunbuster. And the have taken that a step farther with making their pilot's "topless"

:D

There was one series I liked in the 80s called Bubblegum Crisis. Horrible title. It was a post Blade Runner like Japan, where one corporation has gotten so big and powerful that the goverment couldn't oppose it. And they made combat weapons and androids, so the military couldn't stop them. Opposing them were four girls who used armored suits similiar to the american comic book hero, Iron Man. But they named it Bubblegum Crisis because they saw bubblegum as something that gets bigger and bigger on the verge of exploding- Bubblegum Crisis. But well...that's not what we think of.

;)

Tom -

Is this Gunbuster thing OAV or what? I've seen some OAV features that while still have the original Japanese vocal tracks, the translations are done by fairly unskilled translators. There have been times where the english subtitles almost make no sense as they are literal translations.

Just my two cents...

The original Gunbuster was 3 oavs with two episodes each. The new one is a tv series I think....:D

Yeah... I know what you mean by bad translations. :D

I've seen many a painful dialog lines uttered ?;)

Not quite the topless anime I was thinking of...

But then, the type I was thinking of was usually bottomless as well ;)

Disgusted with me yet, ladies? :D

Well...I am a fan of Gunbuster. I still consider the final episode one of anime's finest achievements.

As I think my post in the other thread shows.

I always preferred to think of it as a very smart comment on the plasticity and emptiness of future society.

It was a crying shame that one of the production companies doing the original Bubblegum Crisis went bust, as they never finished it. I often wonder just what the final five episodes would have been like. Bubblegum Crash was just...well, best treated as if it was Galactica '80. And BGC: Tokyo 2040, whilst good on its own terms, didn't really have the nostalgia and eighties factor of the original.

Well I've just surfed in looking for the words "topless" and "Gunbuster". Not for the hentai element, mind you, but because I got confused by the translated word found in Lunar fansub's Reach For The Top 2. I don't know much Japanese. But when the word came up, I actually thought the words sounded like "top place".

Anybody else saw the show and heard the same thing?

HShin- You're right. I think that's how it was meant in the original anime. Topless was meant to be Peerless.

But that the way it goes!

:D
