I am so looking forward to this tonight! Sunday is a real slow night. And Shatner premeires in a new spin off from his character on The Practice. I've never seen it, but he won an emmy for his role. That's pretty damn big if you can hit mainstream and get an oscar from them in something besides a special effects award.

And I heard from friends he's damn good.

And he's suppose to be a real piece of work. :D

Tonight on ABC if anyone is interested. :D

Tom,
I don't know what you thought of the episode....but i can tell you I was dissapointed. It wasn't even as close to as good as it was last year. The story lines were not as well written as last year. Also they had some weird camera angle thing going......it bugged me...that was also new. There were two new people...the blond lead lawyer...I didn't think he was very good. Also the girl that played Lori...I believe was played by Rebecca DeMorney who was very good last year. I thought Shatner did pretty god last night especially when the client pointed a gun at him...for sleeping with his wife(still the same Billy boy)Overall I was dissapointed because it just wasn't as good as last year, since you never saw any of those episodes i will be interested to see what you thought. Maybe it will improve.....

I didn't see the entirety but it was good. Shatner and Spader were like Kirk and Dr Jackson. At the end when Denny is facing death from his friend who's wife Denny slept with Denny laughs.

Denny: I am Denny Crane a Legend among lawyers. Shoot me!!! Make me more of a legend than I already am. Whats the matter? The story of my demise will be in the Times or Globe. Oh by the way the gun you are going to use is the starter pistol I gave you as a present for your bithday.

That dialogue was classic and also familiar. Captain Kirk is now a lawyer, like the famous Samuel Cogley from the original Star Trek episode Court-Martial.

Another familair face on the show was Rene Auberjonois aka ODO from DS 9.

I agree that scence with shatner with the client and the gun was great..........I just noticed a big difference overall from last season. I do think shatner has found a great part for him. An Egomaniac that is very Kwirky

I also liked that sudden appearance by Reverend Al Sharpton. He was good. :D

I thought the show was good. But it was kinda like the Moore show to me. There was decent acting and some good lines, but the lack of likability of most characters left me with a cold feeling. I didn't really like anyone. Its like people you can hang around with, and have a few laughs, but you don't look forward to seeing them again.

I did like Shatner. And you are right, its like megaego Kirk and wicked gay Dr Daniel Jackson. A very straaaaange mix. But interesting.

So was this a first for a new spinoff? Or was it a second season opener?

Btw... did not like the Desperate Wives. Its a slow wait for Boston Legal. I'm not sure if I'm going to go through it again.

But it was a funtime. Especially since there wasn't anything else on. :D

Tom...
Sorry it wasn't as good as I was hoping. It was the first episode of the spinoff they started at the end of the practice...actually the last half of the year was spent starting into this show and it was sooo good Tom. That is why Shatner and Spader(who plays Alan Shore) won emmy's, they were so amazing. And actually there were very interesting characters...Spader drew me in right away when he came on the practice. He is Kind of a lovable bad guy, a guy who does awful things for good reasons. He is very flawed but likeable. The two brunette girls...can't think of their names were also very real and likeable. So I agree Tom it was a let down, I can only hope that it gets better...because of just starting off..working out the kinks. Really didn't like the look of it nor the opening music.

Tom -

I do agree with you about the "Desparate Wives" - I totally passed on it. I would have to be a "desparate viewer" before watching a show like that. I did watch the first part of "Boston Legal" but it really wasn't enough to keep me awake to the end. I thought it was entertaining seeing Shatner again in a weekly show. It was very deja vu-ish that Shatner is still playing a character that gets the ladies!

I also liked seeing Monica Potter ("Just the Thought of You" & "Head Over Heels") - I really think that she could use the weekly exposure - credible, but underrated actress.

It was weird seeing James Spader after such a long time - he sure isn't aging very well. He's lost that "shine" he had in his earlier days. I'm so glad that Michael Shanks is filling the shoes of Daniel Jackson with much better form. Was Spader's character gay? I must have missed that bit, there was so much going on.

I'll watch at least a few more episodes before I give up on it, but it really seems like a retread of "LA Law" to me.

Best,
Bryan

Bryan.....
Spader's character is not gay, he is very troubled. He is drawn to both of the brunettes in the show and they both pretty much want him. I am not sure of the names you mentioned...tell me what characters they were. As far as Spader's looks go....He was very cute in the 80's but almost too cute and he always played a real cocky or arrogant type(which I am usually never very attracted to)He has aged and looks different...I think he is still attractive and more approachable so more attractive to me. He really has done an awesome job so far...but as I say this year it started off very dissapointing to me....

It could just be the first night kinks. They have potential and surely can improve.

Spader's character may not be gay, but he has that over the top flamouyance quality in his performance here. Almost lispy. But its not done to the point where he could sign onto the Fab five. Its subtle, but definitely leaning in that direction.

:D

Thanks Julix for getting me to watch this!

Tom...
I just felt bad recommending it when it was so good last year and fell short last night...but we will hang in ther awhile and see. As for Spader's lisp...or actions or whatever...It was kind of his character he played from the beginning, but it was moreso last night. As I said he is troubled and this seems to be a part of how he adds to the character...he also likes to indimadate other men by doing it the opposite way of bullying...he was verbally and mentally sparing with the blond lawyer guy to make him feel insecure, and did you see how he asked the girl if he did talk too fast after Spader told him he did? It is that kind of thing..Plus I just think he put that into his backgound story...you know how actors come up with a background story?

thomas7g
October 4th, 2004, 04:41 PM
Don't worry, I didn't think the lisp detracted from him. I thought it added to the character. I just was commenting cause it stood out so much.
:D

I'll give it another try. I just have to survive the "Housewives" first. It would be areally cool thing if they brought back our show on Sunday Nights. Start with the Home Remodeling show. Then got to the new adventures of Battlestar Galactica, then onto the new adventures of Lawyer Kirk and his first officer Dr Jackson. That would be a night of MUST SEE TV!!!
;)

Spader's character isn't gay but rather asexual. He can't be involved with women and make his career work at the same time. Too many distractions. Denny on the other hand....................... Need I say more. :D

Hi Cranky
It was great last year when the Shat and Spader both won emmy's. The season opener was not up to the bar they set last year, but we will see if it gets better tonight.........

It was pretty good last night. I love how Spader's character is a little bit of a jerk. Shatner is showing some range. I am looking forward to more episodes. Captain Bran gives it a

I liked it better than last week.http://thomas7g.com/battlestar-galactica/smilies/colonial-grin.gif

Everyone was better. I also liked Shatner in court. This character fits the way he's been acting for quite awhile.

I thought it was okay. I saw some heavy shades of Richard Fish and John Cage from Alley Mc Beal in these characters. The Shatner character had Fish's legal mind with Cage's irrevernce, while Spaders character had Fish's sophistication but retained Cage's, for lack of a better term, "jerkiness." Just my opinion.

Cranky, I never saw Ally McBeal so I can't comment.

You said it. The Shat in court rocked.

Denny: You want to take on the big guy just for thrills while your client suffers.

Rene Auberjonois is a big plus. Kirk and Odo. Great casting idea if you ask me.

I liked the ending. Denny was smoking a cigar. I could relate since I smoke cigars. I started after watching BG on sci fi some yahrens back. Starbuck with the stoggie did it for me. The scene with him inspecting his viper with a stoggie in his mouth is classic.

Berman and Braga are probably kicking themselves. Shat still draws them in. They could have has tos and next Generation team up for the movies. Spock's lifespan is 250 years, kirk was stuck in a Nexus for 78 years, and Scotty was also stuck in a Transporter only to be found in the episode Relics. No wonder the next generation franchise went down the tubes, they disrespected the fans. There is another franchise that also disprespected the fans but rather then make a speech I will do the following:

I LOVE MY MUFFIT!!

Okay..............it is 14 minutes into the show and I am laughing my @## off at Shatner, he was getting botox and the needle broke off in his forehead and he refused to let the doc who did it take the needle out.................so he is walking around at the law office with a needle sticking out of his forehead acting like it is normal

It was good tonight....Freddie Prinze Jr(love him BTW) played "Donny Crane" Denny Crane's son(Shatner's character) and Shatner goes around saying "I 'm Denny Crane" all the time because he is supposedly some legal legend. Anyway so there is this scence where Shatner and Prinze are all...Denny Crane, Donny Crane....Denny Crane, Donny Crane etc.....so funny it was worth watching i have to say...The Shat is in rare form indeed!

I'm glad you reminded me. I almost forgot with Farscape on.

This was very good. I like the job Shatner and Prince did together. I felt sorry for the boy when he overheard he's not a real Crane. Probably BobCrane's love child. Oh well... he is going to be sleeping in Buffy's arms so I'm not feeling too sorry for him,

I can't believe that pickpocket got off!
