Richard Gibbs is indeed doing TNS BSG theme song.
I posed some questions to him over at MB & he responded:

KR: OK Richard:
Any news on the theme song?? Is it a variation of the mini??
How many episodes have you scored (two, more than two)?
Do you think it likely a new CD of your series' scores will be released by lalalandrecords later this year?
Hope to hear some good news.

Richard: Okay, the theme has finally been approved after many different versions, singers, themes, and variations. What we have arrived at is a kind of melange of heavy metal punk with a very cool rap on top. Not really. My original attempts did involve the theme from the mini, but the powers that be desired the Gayatri mantra - which is what they now have. I hired two singers, male and female, for the first half of the theme (which is the mantra) and then the second half is a massive taiko drum piece by yours truly as well. Actually all of the episodes will open with three pieces of mine - first, an amped up version of the number 6 theme for the introduction of the show where we learn the cylon rules; second, a version of the mini theme for the recap of the previous episode; third, the main title described above. It was a long hellacious process but I think the result is worth it.
I did score episodes 2 and 3 - 1 wasn't ready. I was also busy with the main theme so Bear helped with my eps as well. He has scored ep. 1 and will take over from here - I need to keep working on Fat Albert for the next six weeks or so.
As far as a soundtrack goes, who knows? A little early to speculate.

I wonder what the Cylon rules are??? As Aaron said, we will learn more about the Cylons. I wonder as the series progresses whether these "rules" will be more fleshed out.
I also like the recap at the beginning of each episode. Sounds like TNS will be space opera-ish after all (i.e., dependent on previous episodes).

I heard he wanted to have more of the original theme in the miniseries but it just wasn't there. Is there more original theme music on the CD?

John -

I have the CD of the mini soundtrack - all of the music on it is from the mini, but the TOS theme that was used in the background of two scenes isn't on it. Probably as they would have to give Stu Phillips credit on the CD and pay him a royalty fee...

*slowly steps away from Bryan* :nervous:

Darrell -

What can I say? I love TV & Movie soundtracks.... To be quite honest, Richard Gibbs' soundtrack for the miniseries tells a better story when separated from the visual story. It has a lot of good moments and is a damn good piece of music. It made me go back to the tape I made of the mini and wonder "where did the music go?" It was so downplayed in some scenes that would have benefitted from it and others, where the music didn't need to be so strong, it tended to overpower the dialogue as though it wasn't important.

It will be interesting to see what changes Mr. Gibbs makes for the series if they make a soundtrack album from it....

Best,
Bryan

Bryan,

You'll have to buy all the new BSG figures now, that'll be a suitable pennance I think.

Peter

Maybe he's kidding and really using it for a coaster? No, wait; that would be a better use of the DVD...

Peter -

Assuming that my employment situation sorts itself out soon - I would be most happy to comply (I planned on buying them anyway)...!

I asked Richard about the "Cylon rules":

KR: What are the Cylon rules? Are these like the directives that all the Cylons abide by- some code programmed into them by their creators (humans) or perhaps themselves????

RG: Well- they aren't really rules, just an explanation of the Cylons' history and their ability to make multiple human clones. It makes it easier for people who are just tuning in to figure out what the heck is going on.
