Hi all! Just got my set!!!

FYI, if you want the best price, Amazon is probably your best bet. I went to WalMart just now and it was $96.36. With tax, it came out to $103 something. That's almost $20 more than Amazon.

But what they hey, it's better than the $1,500 I was gonna pay in 1987 for the VHS set http://www.cylon.org/phpBB2/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif. BTW, I used a Star Trek check to pay for it! LOL!!!

(You can get Star Trek TOS season 1 here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002I831S/qid%3D1093980778/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/002-2902132-7676018

(And you can get the checks here:)

First Glance:

Thought I'd give you all a first glance at the set.
It comes packaged in a yellow soft plastic case, which is hinged at the bottom. Slightly reminiscent of a tricorder. (Other seasons will be in pretty contrasting colors as well). It is not too big like many thought the BSG set was, and will easily fit on your DVD shelf. Inside that is a standard square paper slip cover. And inside that are the 8 DVDs, in very unique transparent hard plastic holders.

The DVD holder is hinged at the back like a book binding, so you can easily thumb thru to whichever ep you want. The disks are slightly tight, but not bad. The labels clearly show what eps are on each disk. The disks are /not/ double sided.

Content: I was simply amazed at the quality of the video and audio. The Enterprise orbiting various planets is a bit grainy in the white area, but all of the regular shots are PRISTINE. Even on a big widescreen system, the image is nearly flawless, so much so that even still frames are ideal for capture or printing. Interestingly, the eps are labeled by both air date and chronologically (on the main menu each ep is numbered chronologically which takes a bit of getting used to, however their appearance is obviously by air date so it's easy to follow. The disk labels show both).

I am a happy camper! All in all I'd give this set a 5 out of 5 already. Has lots of extras on the 8th disk, wish it had the 25th anniversary documentary and blooper reel (even if no good existing copies exist), but perhaps that will come in season 2 or 3.

Cheers all! Scotty, one daggit to beam up!!!

Cool, very cool. To think that the emblem Kirk and crew wore on their shirts, The Starfleet Delta would become the communicator for ST: TNG.

Anyone see Leonard Nimoy's retrospective on "I Am Not Spock" yet?

Just curious....

Yum! A really nice looking set to buy.... when I have some space to put it on my shelves!

In addition, the UK set has two extra features not on the US generic version (but please... don't shoot the messenger! :nervous: ) - the featurette "Kiss & Tell : Romance in the 24th Century" & a trivia quiz "Trekker Connections" - a DVD comparison website claims that some US retailers are selling the bonus extras as a supplemental disc with the main set.

Now that's how to do a DVD set (take note, Universal!)

Actually, those two extra features are available in the US on a bonus disc if you buy the set at Best Buy stores.

"Hi, Mr. Spock"
Ken,
My husband says he saw the version that came out in the 70's( he thought) and also told me that he came out with a version after that called "I am Spock". Guess he finally embraced the character. Is there a new updted version out?
Mr Spock was my favorite character on the show.

Muffit thanks for the link and review!!!! I wanna buy, need money

I called Best Buy before ordering at Amazon. The salesperson said the set was $106.00. I asked what is the sales price and she replied that was it.

I have both books. You see, I was the kid who said "Hi Mr. Spock" to him while he was walking into the theatre in the round to perform Caligula at Mary Moody Theatre at St. Edwards University in Austin, TX in 1975. That's why I have 'vulcan torturer' on my description at CF, LOL.

I finally got to see Leonard Nimoy again three years ago in Los Angeles at a DVD signing for Star Trek 3, and told him. I had my son wear my old starfleet jacket that I wore the day I first met Leonard Nimoy. He almost used the vulcan death grip on me. :)

"That was you???" quite the emotional response, actually. :)

I'm sort of hoping he mentioned it in the DVD interview.

Ken great story....wow, honorable mention huh???I could see his face when he said "that was you?"...priceless. :) It must have been interesting for you too all those years later with your son in your jacket. Life is something huh???Sometimes I don't think actors realize the impact they have on people cause they are on the set or whatever and we are watching these shows especially as kids and just think all of it is real. It is even kinda like when you are a kid and you see your teacher at the grocery store and it freaks you out. Like, what are you doing here? Don't you like live at the school?

My words were the punchline of his first book, "I Am Not Spock." http://scifipulse.net/battlestarnews/BSG/Kenthomson.htm

The teacher thing, I'm totally with you, LOL! My sixth grade teacher came through my line when I was working a cash register (long ago in a galaxy far, far, away, LOL) and I did a double-take. Silly thing lasted a nano-second, but still, that was the feeling. Like a fish out of water.

Hey, too bad their PR dept. didn't think outside the box (so to speak ;) ). They could've done this:

And instead of "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield", they could've done a pun, "Let This Be Your Last Box Set", LOL! :D
