Old Filmation shows

Do you remember old children shows like He-Man? She-Ra?

Wel this is old news...it happened last march, but I happen to find that just a few months ago the entire library of childrens shows by Filmation was sold for $20 million by Hallmark Entertainment to Entertainment Rights in the UK.

ER now has the rights to sell or repackage hit children shows such as He-Man and Masters of the Universe, She-Ra, Ghost-busters, My Favorite Martian, Archie, The Lone Ranger, Fat Albert, Sabrina, and Bravestar. So we may see these titles on DVD in the near future.

I'm not sure, but filmation also created products like Space Academy, Ark II, Jason of Star command and I'm hoping that this will mean those titles will be available eventually on dvd too. Though I'm not sure if those titles were part of the deal since they weren't listed.

ER also owns Felix the Cat, Underdog, The Mighty Hercules, and many more titles.

there are 3 childrens tv series I loved and for the life of me cannot remember the names of them none were on for very long probably less than one season.

pretty sure they were all in the 1970's
One was about these kids (don't recall if they were a family or not) who had all these wild animals a cougar, a falcon, etc. and they used them for search and rescue that was their job.

The next show I have forgotten the name to was about a black horse (very short lived) barely recall anything really for some reason something about lightning comes to mind

then there was a show about a weird little alien that looks a lot like the monsters from 1999

This show was by Sid And Marty Kroft. It was named "Sigmund and the Sea Monsters." When I was 8 I watched it every Saturday morning. Great Fun!

My Pleasure! :blush: They were rerunning this show on TV Land at around 1:00 AM on the weekends a few months ago. I know they show is available on a Sid and Marty Kroft Compilation set on DVD. I do remember that the show was on for two years. In the second year, Rip Taylor played a wacky Sea Genii they always got the gang into trouble. I loved that Sigmund's family had a pet lobster that would bark like a dog. Sigmund's mean older brothers were named Burp and Slurp. I'll post more if any other details rattle out of my noggin!

Sounds like Lassie's Rescue Rangers. There was a Raccoon. And they had this unique orange helicopter.

"Lassie's! BUM BUM BUMBUM Lassie's Rescue Rangers!"

The other I think is Black Beauty. There may also have been one based on National Velvet. Not so sure though.

Sorry Thomas there was no Lassie in the title and it was all real animals they used it was not an animation. the Horse show was about a horse that used it's horse sense to rescue people and stuff like that(a real horse),and not based on any known horses at the time.

My research indicates that in 1977 there was a show called Thunder about a semi-wild Black Stallion befriended by two young children. Each episode had a lesson at the end of the story. It starred Melora Hardin as Cindy Prescott and Justin Randi as her young neighbor Willi. :salute:

Filmation was a great animation studio that is strangly looked down upon from certain quarters. Sure, the animation was limited, but I find their work to be more visually appealing than some of the pokemon kind of stuff that is churned out today. They did the most with what they had. Saturday mornings have'nt been the same without Filmation.

My favorite shows from the house of Filmation include:

Star Trek (I know Berman and Braga wish this show never existed, but it was really great. How many toons today are written by the likes of Larry Niven?)

Flash Gordon (Filmation really pulled out all the stops for this show. The animation was really impressive. The plot was faithful to the source material and the music was really majestic. I wish this series was out on DVD.)

Super Hero toons (Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Super Boy, Shazam. Filmation did a great job of bringing these comic book heroes to life.

Tarzan (I havent seen these toons since they were first on but I remember that they were really dynamic.)

Fantastic Voyage (This show had a flying submarine that would be shrunk to go on secret missions. You can't ask more than that for a half hour of animated adventure.

As for their live action work:

Space Academy ( I was really shocked to learn that there were only like 15 episodes of this show. I thought it was on for a few seasons. The model work was really impressive on this show.

Jason of Star Command ( This show was part of an umbrella title that included Jason. It was 15 minute chapters that had clifhangers like an old movie serial. It starred they guy that used to make the Grey Poupon commercials.

It's amazing how much time I spent in front of the TV as a lad.

I really loved filmation!

They actually built a REALLY expensive new studio building near where I grew up. I hoped to one day work there....BUT IT COST TOO MUCH!!!! And the next thing I knew Filmation was bankrupt and out of business. The closest I got was to apply for a job doing those limited edition prints of cartoon cells. But that never panned out, so I went to art school instead.

I can still hear that old Tarzan theme...bom-bom...bombombom-BOM-BOM!

Whoever was the musical director at Filmation really earned their paycheck. The musical themes really supported the action! I can still hear the opening themes of Flash Gordon, Batman and Star Trek in my mind.

Filmation also did shows that had bubble-gum music interludes like The Archies and The Groovy Ghoulies. I would watch these shows on occasion but I was more into the Action-adventure stuff.

Does anyone know of a great Filmation History site on the web? I would love to learn more about them.

I managed to see a pretty complete run of the Star Trek animated series in the early 90's, and really enjoyed it. I think it captured the spirit of the original series well. I agree with Bijou on the catchy music of the titles - different yet memorable.

A couple of things I remember about Filmation is they had a distinct animation style that carried over from series to series (eg. camera 'angles' if you can call it that).

Another is that the logo (with the face on the 'O') used to spook me rotten!

I remember the Space Sentinels, the Brady Kids (!) as well as the others that have been mentioned.

I think I liked Tarzan the best.

I forgot about the Space Sentinels! It's funny, I would watch the show every Saturday morning when I was a Kid but I don't remember much about it. There were three main characters and a robot. There was a blond guy named Hercules (I think) an Asian guy and a brunette lady. I don't remeber any plots or settings. I guess this is one file my brain has deleted from lack of use.

Rowen, could this show be "Search and Rescue: The Alpha Team?" This Live Action show was on in 1977.

Many of the Filmation series mentioned above will be released over the next year and a half on DVD by a company called BCI. They released the Animated Flash Gordon series yesterday and they did a great job. Soon they will release "Ark II", "Space Academy", "Jason of Star Command", "Blackstar", "The Space Sentinels", and many more. I can't wait!

The big item for me will be the 2007 release of "The Secrets Of Isis", starring Joanna Cameron, who made quite an impression on the young male audience back then. :)

I am really looking forward to Jason of Star Command and Space Academy. It's hard to believe it has almost been 30 years since I last viewed these shows. I'm looking forward to Isis too. In fact, I look forward to all of Filmation's output during this period.
