I have been watching Saga of A Sar World on DVD from the box set the last two nights. This is the first time I have seen this version with the deleted scenes added. These scenes change ENTIRELY how I view Larson's original effort, TOS, and have brought clarity to much of what I see in Moore's mini. Since I don't have every version of SOASW memorized like many of you great folks and have already seen at least two differnet versions of SOASW before this one I would like some clarification from those of you that know whether the below scenes were originally deleted or were they in SOASW as it appeared on television or at the theatre:

Athena/Starbuck locker room scene: I had seen it before but this one seemed far more detailed. It seemed like Athena had more dialogue. Things between her and Starbuck seemed a lot clearer to me this time around.

Adama/Apollo scene: Apollo confronts Adama after the council meeting where it is decided to go to Carillon on his leadership.

Adama/Athena scene: Adama tells Athena about his experience on Caprica and about his thoughts on his burden.

Baltar/Imperious Leader: I don't remember ever hearing that Baltar was to be prepared for "public execution" before.

Apollo/Boxey scene: After Apollo explains the origins of the machine cylons and the cylon-human war Boxey asks Apollo about if that could happen with their own machines and drones in the future. I remember the cylon origin statement but I didn't remember the human robot/drone conversation.

OK you Battlestar experts let me know the answers. I will discuss on other threads what I came to think after seeing these scenes for the first time (or again if they were already there). :salute:

To put it most simply, Antelope, the three hours of Saga on the DVD is what appeared on TV on 9/17/78.

There was a theatrical release at about the same time. The two hours of this feature was cut from what was shown on TV.

What I suspect is that you've seen the theatrical version (which had been released on home video), and that's what you remember. It would certainly explain your noticing the longer scenes, and additional scenes, that appear on the DVD.

As far as the Baltar/Imperious Leader scene, in the theatrical release you'll recall Baltar was executed. That was fine for a stand-alone movie, but, since BSG went to series, it was decided that Baltar made a great villian. That's why he was spared in the three-hour pilot.

Make sense?

I have read on this site that the scenes where Apollo confronts Adama and the Adama and Athena scene in his quarters were deleted scenes. As I read Dawg's reply it would appear these scenes were only deleted from the theatrical release and probably also the video that was sold. These scenes entirely change the character of Adama. Are you really sure those scenes were as it appeared on TV in 1978? I saw the show when it first aired in 1978 but was only 11 years old. I later saw it in the theatre, on the scifi channel a couple times, and twice on video. I never remembered those scenes but think it entirely possible I only saw this uncut version once in 1978 if what Dawg says is correct and that would explain my poor memory on those scenes.

Dawg is correct - All of the scenes you mentioned were in the initial broadcast of "Saga of a Star World" on ABC. At the time, I managed to make an audio recording of it when it was shown and had listened to it many times by the time that BSG came out in theaters in 1979. I immediately noted the missing scenes, but I realized that they were probably cut to bring the film down to a 2-hour running time for theatrical release.

I bought a video tape a few years ago that had all of the scenes intact, but I was even happier when the DVD set came out and all of the missing scenes had been re-edited back in. Check the run time of "Saga" on the DVD set and compare it to the run time on the DVD of the theatrical release - the time difference is from those missing scenes....

I'm pretty sure the big dvd pack is what aired on tv. But the first dvd is the theatrical version. I could be mistaken though.

Stand alone DVD is the theatrical cut. The boxed set is the TV broadcast. I would add that in syndicated repeats and on Sci-Fi channel through the years the TV broadcast has been used with chunks more cut out in order to accomodate airing it in three parts.

It's unfortunate IMO that too many people seem to be more familiar with the theatrical version than the normal TV cut and that they use that truncated version as the basis for their impressions of Galactica.

There is one scene though in the theatrical cut that is not part of the TV cut (though it is in the deleted scenes supplement). When Adama enters the Council chamber to hear Uri's proposal for destroying their weapons, the TV cut snips 55 seconds that shows Adama entering and asking "What is the purpose of this meeting?" and then Uri begins his pitch which includes Adama indignantly rising and saying, "Justice from the Cylons? Is that what you said?" And then the scene goes into where the TV version begins.
