Hey everyone -
I just got back from the movies and I'll bet you can guess what I saw.... You're right - it was Spider-Man 2! This movie was fantastic! Way better than the original film - the character storylines were very well developed and were used quite effectively throuout the film. SFX were top notch and mind blowing to say the least! The house was packed (at 11 am on a weekday too!) and the audience enjoyed it immensely - applause was quite evident when the film ended, which is always nice! I could go on and on about the film - I don't have anything negative to say about this one - I usually have at least one or two comments, but I can't think of any for Spider-Man 2 - not a one!
If you are gonna see a movie - go see this one! It really kicked ass and even made me shed a tear for a moment (not a sad one, either). Hell, I would have even payed the full price of admission to see it....
Get thee to a movie theater!
Best,
Bryan

I think films like this helps us in a small way. More than a film like Riddick. You have a film full of fantasy. It is FUN. It appeals to the whole family. It don't glorify sex. Its just rip-roaring fun. Kinda like what our old show was. The new Riddick is more like the new BG with its dark and serious gritty premise and it has its good points and its fans.
But look what A GOOD FUN ADVENTURE CAN DO!!!

BTW- If you see TheHobb around here, he once in a blue moon posts, then give him a big compliment. He worked on both Spidey films I believe. He did web effects on the first film.

btw another big advantage of seeing Spidey.... If Spidey does well...and it will...it will help Tom DeSanto with his XMEN3 and Transformer movies. And if those two movies do well... then .. we all know what could possibly his THIRD upcoming hit!

I would like to say something further about the Spider-man films - I think that it really is the first series of films based on a comic super hero, where the characters aren't used as props or scenery. The Superman series started out good with the first film leveled off a bit with the second and went downhill from there. I can see why they want to do a remake, so they can make more of a success with it - the same thing goes for the Batman series as well.
I really felt something for the characters in this film - when they did something, there was an actual motive for what they did as opposed to doing it just because the script dictates it for eaking out a bit of drama. The scene with Spidey and those passengers on the train really got to me - I actually felt something when I saw it and I didn't feel manipulated when I did so.
I thought the first film was very good on a technical level and the characters were off to a good start, but "2" really blew me away with the depth of the characters - It also didn't hurt to have an intense, young actor like Tobey Maguire playing the lead - he may not have the looks, voice or build of Christopher Reeve in his younger days, but he sure fits the role just fine.
Maybe if the people that made "Riddick" spent as much time on the characters as they did on the SFX (the strongest bit of the film), then people would have taken to it more and recommended it to their friends, or gone back a second or third time.
Characterization is the one thing that makes me feel that a big-budget BSG film will make a lot of money - Glen Larson had the right formula - really good characters that were likeable, a good story and some stellar SFX for good measure. When they get around to making that film, I know that I will be in line (along with a lot of you) to see it more than once and to buy the DVD when it comes out.
I look forward to that day....

Bryan

100% right bryan!
I also would like to point out, that though I loved the Superman and Batman early films, they wouldn't have had the guts to... ...reveal their character's identity in public.
The corporate wise powers that be would have been gutless. Take no chances with change. Lock the characters in stasis and sap put every dollar till it goes stale. Then discard and latch onto something else.
By allowing this one simple forbidden thing, which led to a very strong scene, it really showed that they are out for story first. Corporate decisions are a distant consideration. Thank god!
At fisrt... I thought the relationship with Mary Jane which drives the early section of the film was a bit bland and lethargic. But it really turns around in the latter half of the film. Once the new villian is introduced EVERYTHING gets better.
GREAT MOVIE!
SPIDERMAN! SPIDERMAN! DOES WHATEVER A SPIDER CAN.......
