Tom, rented it and you were right: It's really cute, sweet story.
And the animation is beautiful.

You're right - it is a very nice story and the animation is indeed quite wonderful. Hayao Miyazaki is also responsible for other great Anime films such as Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky and last year's Academy Award winner for Best Animated Film, Spirited Away.
I had bought Spirited Away as a birthday gift for the son of a friend last summer. We sat down and watched it after the birthday party had ended and all the other kids went home. I was so impressed with the film, that I went out and bought another copy for myself! This inspired me to watch more of Miyazaki's work and I found Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky. If you liked Kiki, you'll love Castle in the Sky and Spirited Away. Miyazaki's work gets progressively better with each film.
Best,
Bryan

Hi all! Yep, that's a great film! I was so impressed by the backgrounds (especially the garden wall scene).
Very cute movie, gorgeous drawings...

Bryan, I saw part of Castle in the Sky at a Con, I hope I can track it down somewhere again (doggone Disney distribution). I have Spirited Away, I like it though it isn't one for the little kids.
Kiki I liked better story wise. All had great art and technique. not stuff you see here these days either, but masterful, beautiful techniques that you only saw glimpes of in older Disney aninmated features. Miyazaki matured them though and made them extended sequences that are works of art. I'm thinking of the vistas when she was flying and how they showed the trees going by, the ocean city. Tom and I had a discussion about it a while back and I was concerned about the witchcraft in it. Frankly there's a lot more in the Harry Potter books. And Kiki's only witchy thing is her flying which is treated as a talent.

Castle in the Sky is pretty easy to find - I rented it from my local Blockbuster Video and I know that they still have it. I was just at Best Buy this afternoon and saw it in their Anime section as well. I think that you can get it for about 20 bucks - maybe even cheaper on eBay.
I agree with you about your assessment of Spirited Away - not for the really young ones. The whole bit about the girl getting separated from the parents and lost in a strange place, not to mention some scary visuals in a couple of scenes could keep some kids up at night!
