Thunderbirds movies to be reissued on DVD

MGM is re-releasing the two original Thunderbirds movies to tie in with the live action adventure - although no UK release date has yet been confirmed.

The region 1 launch is 27 July and both films will be anamorphic widescreen transfers but this time with newly created Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 soundtracks alongside the original mono ones. Better still, each movie arrives with a full set of extras.

Thunderbirds Are Go will include:

History and Appeal: a 10-minute retrospective looking at the development of the feature films.
Factory of Dolls and Rockets: a 9-minute featurette on the puppets and model vehicles.
Epics in Miniature: an 8-minute featurette discussing the difficulties of filming in miniature scale.
There’s also a 3-minute animated photo gallery of 50 behind-the-scenes stills, the original theatrical trailer, a Who Said That? quiz and a pair of 30-second Easter Eggs, Come With Me to the Rushes and What Does FAB Mean?

Thunderbird 6 will include:

Lady Penelope: a 10-minute featurette on the creation of International Rescue's London Agent.
Building Better Puppets: an 8-minute featurette on the development of the Supermarionation puppets.
Tiger Moth: a 6-minute featurette discussing the filming of the Thunderbird 6 Tiger Moth bi-plane).
There’s also a 3-minute animated photo gallery, the original theatrical trailer, a Craft Mission Match-Up quiz and a pair of Easter Eggs, A Call From Stanley Kubrick (1 minute) and A Television Tribute (30 seconds)

If only Carlton would return to the TV series and finally remaster all 32 episodes to the same standard as, say, Captain Scarlet or Joe 90. Rumours are circulating that the company is considering a special collector's set with additional extras but no firm details are available.

The original Thunderbirds Rule! One of the Tracy Brothers looks like 1965 Sean Connery.

Cool!

I have not yet purchased the International Rescue set yet. Does anyone have a review?

Yes, that would be Scott Tracy, the eldest of the Tracy brothers and Pilot of Thunderbird 1!

I have indeed and enjoyed every minute of it along with the newly filmed interviews with David Lane and Sylvia Anderson. Here is my review as I posted it at Cylon Alliance (where my post was completely ignored :/: ):

Hey everyone -

I had to stop at Best Buy this morning when I heard that the feature films of Thunderbirds Are Go! and Thunderbird 6 are now available on DVD. Both films come together in a 2-disk set and the sale price was ony 17.99!

MGM Home Video did a wonderful job with the packaging and the extras. There is a total of 5 newly filmed featurettes that cover some of the history and making of the feature films. I was pleased to see that Sylvia Anderson is featured quite prominently, both in the commentaries and each of the featurettes. We've always heard or seen Gerry Anderson up until now - It's nice to get her point of view for a change. There are also the original film promos and a few other minor bits and pieces.

The film transfer quality is excellent and is in letterbox format, which is nice as these films were made for the silver screen, not TV. The sound quality is excellent as well. This is great as the source materials are almost 40 years old!

If you are a Thunderbirds fan like I am, you'll want to pick these up to complete your collection!

Go out and buy it! I'm in such a good mood, I might even go see the new TB film tomorrow - even with its obvious flaws!

FAB!
Bryan

Did you know, according to 'The Complete Book Of Thunderbirds', published by Carlton - the puppet for Jeff Tracy, head of the Tracy family & International Rescue, was modelled on none else than Cmdr. Adama himself, Lorne Greene! (popular at the time of production in 'Bonanza').

All the best,

Ian -

I have that book too! I guess that would explain the widowed father and all those grown boys, eh? If I had to pick a place to hang out, I would choose Tracy Island over the Ponderosa any day....!

Cheers,
Bryan

I bought the set yesterday and I recommend it highly! If you are a Thunderbirds fan this is a must buy. Unlike the A&E release of the show, ( which I am not knocking, they look and sound great.) this set is loaded with bonus features. There are many featuretts, commentaries, photo galleries and trailers. There are also extra goodies like magnets and paper cut-outs of the Thunderbirds. This was Gerry And Sylvia Andersons' greatest show (in supermarionation anyway.) and MGM has done the movies justice! In a word, this release is FAB. Thunderbirds are Go!
