Surprise! The roots of the word "Yahren"

Well, well, you all probably already know this, but I didn't. Whilst I was perusing the splendiferous web, I ran across a German phrase....

...and the word "Jahren" was prominently displayed.

"Jahren" is German for "year", and it's pronounced, "yahren"!

Can't believe it took me all these yahren to find out!!! :D

As one who lived in Germany when I was in the Army I kind of thought Yahren was based on the German word for year.

I wonder if anyone knows if the "Geminese" language spoken in TOS is based on Latin or a Latin based language like Spanish or Italian. I know the Geminese term for Earth, Terra is Latin in origin. I know there is one scene in TOS (I think in Saga of a Star World) where an elderly person is speaking Geminese but I don't have the DVD and when I was a kid I didn't know any Spanish or Latin to listen for the similarity.

I remember the scene where Starbuck, Boomer and Apollo are aboard the Gemini Freighter checking on the refugees and the elderly woman walks in with her husband speaking Geminese. Now, I don't know if the intent was to have the Geminese language connected to ancient Latin, but having watched the scene on the DVD several times I could not detect any words resembling any of the modern Latin languages like Spanish or Italian. One thing I did detect was that her pronunciation of the words, especially the vowel sounds were....very North American.

"Jahren" is the plural - "years"

The pronunciation is the same for most northen european languages, albeit with different spellings - "jaar", "år", etc.

One of my pet peeves with some of the galactica novels is that they sometimes use "yahrens" as a plural, which make no sense at all, since "yahren" is already the plural of "yahr" and doesn't need an "s" added to it!

From what I can tell, Gemonese is Latin. I briefly discuss the nature of Colonial language, as well as offer a detailed look at Colonial technical and scientific terms (in a way I haven't seen before) on my web site. It’s not much to look at yet, and is a slow work in progress, but I’ll get it all up eventually.

The Germanic basis for the word "yahren" is part of the reason that I think sectons and sectars are base-six time units: "sechs" = six.
