YEP I remember them I enjoyed the Time Tunnel it was a great show, land of the giants I remember seeing some of them but not all, cool show though.

Does anyone remember Monkey or Monkey Magic on in the 80s
Red Dwarf is another one that I really enjoyed, great humour and a intresting if disturbing concept "The last surviving human is a space Bum" who hang around
all day drinking beer, eating curries with popadoms and telling people to Smeg off.
hmm where do i sign up

There was a Canadian Sci Fi show that was on in the early/mid 70's called The Starlost wich was partially based on a book that Harlan Ellison wrote. It only ran one season and it's major drawback was that it was shot on video tape and the SFX shots were based on "chroma key" technology. It was interesting to watch even though the production values were low.

I always wonder why someone doesn't re-make something like that - so few people would remember it well. I always thought the show would have done much better if it had a bigger budget behind it and had more time to develop. I know that some episodes were available in VHS compilation sets. I wouldn't mind seeing them again. I've got tapes of Space Academy and Ark II on my shelves - I know that the stories were better than those even if the SFX weren't.

Bryan

I actually got Quark around here if anyone wants me to make an avatar or something. :)

I loved that show when I was little. I really like the spaceship. But then I LOVED any spaceship back then! Garbage collectors in space? Hmmm....

One bit a trivia I learned from the great Michael Faries, the original idea for a new Battlestar Galactica that Bonnie Hammer came up with was to have a big huge ship, with all these biodomes, and the cast would travel from dome to dome having adventures. She was trying to get a Stargate like show while avoiding the "spaceship" angle as much as possible. I guess she never saw StarLost.

No it was cancelled. The main actor was on another show, with the song I Need A Hero as the theme, and he shot himself in the head with a gun with a blank, and died from the paper being shot into his brain.

can I throw in Manamal and The Man from Atlantis?

Bombadil
April 9th, 2004, 08:58 AM
OK. A very long time ago (for me, too long for some of you), was an adventure show called Men Into Space. I got into a dispute with a little friend of mine once, who claimed that nobody had actually gone to the moon yet, and I didn't believe him. This was about 1959, when I was, oh, six.

Anything by Gerry Anderson, but especially Fireball XL-5.

Does anybody besides me think that Automan was a real hoot? Watched it faithfully every week.

Oh, and Star Blazers, but there's a thread devoted to that one somewhere else.

Finally, is there another Old Timer who can remember a cartoon called Colonel Bleep? (No, this was back in the days when nobody thought it meant that. The title referred to the noises the alien colonel made. This was back when a major popular show could feature a kid named Beaver Cleaver and nobody thought it was off-color. Oh, those were innocent days!)

I did a few other silly stunts trying to imitate various shows. I once at the age of 8 or 9 climbed up onto the roof of the duplex we had so that I could leap from our roof to the roof of the Duplex next door :eek:someone noticed me and called my parents and my Dad managed to talk me out of it. :D

Quark was a great show that just didn't last long enough. I think Richard Benjamin played Quark. I was ticked when DS9 appropriated the name for the Ferengi, but later liked that show, too.

I enjoyed Man from Atlantis, but at the time, I couldn't understand why Belinda Montgomery didn't look more like Elizabeth since they were sisters. Both were very cute, but looked very different. Years and years later, I found out that my friend who'd told me they were sisters was either quite mistaken, or more likely, having a good laugh pulling my leg.

The Fantastic Journey with Ike Eismann, Carl Franklin, and Roddy MacDowell was a show that offered great promise, but it only lasted a few episodes before being cancelled. I saw Ike Eismann in ST2:TWOK a week or so ago. He had a relatively small part, and I'm not sure if he's been in anything big since then.

"The Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr." was a great cross-over western/sci-fi show in the vein of "The Wild, Wild West," another of my favorites from my childhood. While WWW had Robert Conrad and neat gadgets, Briscoe had Bruce Campbell, Billy Drago, the orbs, and Kelly Rutherford. Fortunately, they had time to tie up the loose ends of Briscoe after it was cancelled, but there was much that could have been done in a second season.

Okay, here is another title I cant remember. The premise (what I can remember); a small group of people become lost in the Bermuda Triangle or something. They find these dimensional doors into various alternate universes. The doors were a cheesy 'window shade opening' neon light affair. I think Roddy McDowel was involved in it somehow. It was 1975ish.

Cant remember much else about it, ...... As kids we used to imagine every hole in a fence, every doorway, and every gap in the trees was a dimensional door from the show. :)

Not to be confused with Fantastic Voyage the movie and the cartoon. :)

I remember swiming dolphin style was so much fun. I even wore plastic sandwhich bags on my hands so I could have that webbing, and it actually did make me swim laps a wee bit faster! The only problem was that kick stroke often gave me cramps in my calves!

For some reason I really wanna see the man from Atlantis movie where there were killer spores. I don't remember it too well, but I wanna see it again!

Sci-Fi,

Good memory on that. imdb.com says both were from 1977.

Also regarding Man from Atlantis, Patrick Duffy (Mark) turned up on Dallas the next season. Victor Buono, who I believe was the guy trying to capture Mark, was Batman's King Tut.

It wasn't a TV show, but since Tom mentioned it, The Fantastic Voyage was a very good movie with Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasence. The excellent novelization of the movie (based on a screenplay by Harry Kleiner) was done by sci-fi master Isaac Asimov.

Anybody remember War Of The Worlds the TV series? I loved the first season. But the second season they did the insane move of killing off everyone's favorite character, Col Ironhorse, cause the producers thought he was too boring!!! They also killed off the cool black guy in the wheelchair and destroyed their base of operations.

Talk about bad revisions. This is more proof that hollywood has no respect for continuity or story and will do anything to make money.

Lot of scifi shows didn't last too long, but weren't too bad or had some promise. The Invaders, Holmes and Yoyo, Harsh Realm, Max Headroom, Halfway Across the Galaxy and Turn Left , The Guardians, Ghost Story, Nightmare Cafe, The Phoenix, The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne, Space: Above and Beyond, First Wave, etc. etc. just to name a few.

The SuperMarionation shows by Gerry Anderson was fun stuff. Supercar, Stingray, Thunderbirds, etc.

The 2nd seasons for some of the others were like Thomas7g said above, it seemed like they skipped a season or 2 or just changed the story arc and missed telling about major events that should have been shown. And some shows were just plain cancelled like The Invisible Man (petition is still up at http://www.petitiononline.com/imans3/petition.html ) upsetting many fans.

Holy cow, The Fantastic Journey! For years I've wondered if I dreamed that show. Going to the above posted link and reading the episode descriptions really blew my mind. I remember so many specific shots and scenes from that show, although I was only 11 when it aired. For 1977 it was WAY ahead of its time with its overall story arc. The basic concept suggests Sliders or Quantum Leap, but The Fantastic Journey had a lot more promise overall. Wish I could find those episodes on tape. . . .

kat,

That was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. He played Scottie's young engineering assistant who stayed at his post to the end. Scottie carried him into sickbay, burned almost beyond recognition. He touched Kirk's hand or collar, which was what led to Kirk having the bloody turned down collar through much of the rest of the movie.

April 10th, 2004, 06:13 PM
Firstly, since I live in Norway, I have really no clue whatsoever about what shows are regarded as unknown, because anything except Star Trek and Babylon 5 are consiered "unknown" here in Norway. Guess with all the oil, no natural disasters, no dangerous animals and a peaceful neighborhood, God had to somewhat compensate by making sure we lack decent TV programming.

Anyhow, I really liked "Moonbase Alpha". That seventies(?) show about a colony on the moon driftig out of orbit and heading out in space. Okay, it was rather "Star Trek" inspired, but the moonbase still gave i a rather original premise, and some of the episodes were really great, even if the space battles were nowhere near those in Battlestar Galactica.

Another show that was quite interesting, was "Captain powers and the soldiers of the future". Okay, it was a "teen show", but the premise somewhat reminded me of Galactica. And it used CGI in the late eighties!

Luckily that issue was left behind when we discovered a more serious topic argueing over which animal was more intelligent; a chimp or a dog. My friend was such a dork, everyone knows a chimp is more intelligent. Duh.

Geez, talk about blowing the dust off of my memory!

I really liked Quark as a kid. Gene/Jean, Phicas and the Betty's. Very funny stuff,

As for other shows that I liked :

how about Mantis (from FOX) - a crippled scientist becomes a super hero with the aid of a Super Suit
Of course there have been other pretty good "super hero shows": The Flash and Isis (from Saturday morning tv as a kid) spring to mind

And speaking of "from Saturday Morning tv as a kid": Arc-II and Jason of Star Command. Even though I remember very little of these shows (other then overall themes) I have fond memories. Arc-II was scientists traveling around in a big RV helping the people of Earth many years after some kind of holocaust and Jason - space cops pretty much

Uh,....yeah, you see Chimps have HANDS. They can use sticks to beat each other up and pick out termites. Can dogs do that?

FYI: When Space Academy was canceled, they took the set and used it for Jason of Star Command. Also, the Space Academy space shuttle was also used for Ark II (all made by the same production company).

Does anyone remember Cliff Hanger (1979). It was a primetime three serial one hour show.

Cliff Hanger: Curse of Dracula - Dracula is a College Professor, teaching European history in California. Von Helsing grandson is on the hunt for the famed vampire.

Cliff Hanger: Stop Susan William - Journalist investigates her brother's death and travels the world to find the murderer.

Cliff Hanger: Secret Empire - Old West Marshal chases bank robbers and find underground civilization. He helps rebel overthowl evil overlord.

nccdee,

I hadn't thought of Cliffhanger in years! If I remember correctly, that show was cancelled and none of the serials was concluded, the near ultimate cliffhanger. There were a couple that may have been worse, though. In the season finale of Crime Story, the plane with most all of the main characters crashed. The next fall, I looked and looked for the show and finally discovered that it had been cancelled! The other was the season finale of Space: Above and Beyond, where most of the crew was apparently killed in a series of actions. That was a good sci-fi show killed before its time.

All I remember of Cliff Hangers was a scene of Dracula running through a cemetary as the sun rises, smoke streaming from his form. I remember liking him though, like he was the hero of the show.... Oh, yeah, and a scene of a elevator decending down a cliff wall......that must have been "Invisible Empire".
There were cowboys in that one also, right?

How about "V"? Or should I say"V"?The miniseries was really pretty good at first, but I think they changed writers and it sort of went down the toilet. And the TV series was just awful--my wife and I would complain each week that ANOTHER major character got killed off. But the original miniseries was pretty cool.

Jason of Star Command reminded me of its precurser series;
"Space Academy."

OMG OMG OMG I LOVE YOU Ioraptor !!!!
I had these vague memories of a few shows that I loved that came out and dissapeared so fast and this was one of them but for the life of me I could not remember the name of it or anything that would help me track it down!

Nccdee -

I remembered reading this bit of info in your post, but I forgot about it. I was watching my recordings of Ark II earlier this week and I had always remembered Ark II being broadcast previous to Space Academy. When I watched Space Academy, I noticed the strong design similarity between the Ark and the Seeker.

It was indeed Ark II that was produced first. Ark II was broadcast in 1976 and Space Academy in 1977 - both were productions of Filmation. The Ark and the Ark Roamer were built by the Brubaker Group - the Roamer was a customized design taken from the Brubaker "Box", which was a garage-built minivan design based off a VW chassis. When the Brubaker Group, built the Ark vehicle for the series, the external body component were built in fibreglass modular segments. When Ark II ceased production after its single season, the modular segments were removed from the wheeled chassis used so the Ark could be driven and were re-used for the Seeker in Space Academy.

This was a great cost-saving production move which was repeated when Jason of Star Command went into production and re-used the sets, models and some SFX shots from Space Academy.

It's amazing what info there is on the web, considering the fact that these shows were produced 25 years ago and were made for Saturday Morning viewing.....

Best,
Bryan

I have run across references to an Australian show called "Phoenix 5". It was produced in the late 70s. It seemed to be a Star Trek type show where the characters cruise the universe saving the day. It seems to have been on for one year and has never (to my knowlege) been released in the United States. Has anyone ever seen this show? I am really curious to hear what this show was all about.

regarding Phoenix 5 I found this

<LI>"Phoenix Five" A low budget Australian sci-fi program, borrowing considerably from "Star Trek" except they apparently missed the good stuff. The 'Phoenix 5' is a ship in the Earth Space Control Fleet, crewed by Captain Roke, Ensign Adam Hargraves, Cadet Tina Culbrick, and Carl the Computeroid.

'Spark from a Dying Fire' Adam and Tina fall under the hypnotic influence of sparks from a dangerously destructive asteroid and start fighting.

Anyone remember the old 80's series "Quark"? It was cheesy, but funny nonetheless :)

I definitely remember that show. Richard Benjamin played Captain Quark, who commanded a garbage scow in space. I think he had two uber-babe twins (blondes) in his crew...and the weapons they used were called "Gamma Guns".

Funny show for its short run. Was on when I was but a wee laddie.

Ahh...reminiscin'

Ahhhh....we be goin' back into me youth! ARGHHH!!!!

I loved Jason of Star Command...it was the more militaristic of the two Saturday morning shows. Starfires were the coolest. I remember, as a kid, doing a hand drawn comic of Jason of Star Command, where Star Command was engaged in pitched battle against Drago's flagship. Starfires fought Dragon fighters.

As I recall, I think JoSC had a couple of fairly decent space battles itself. Both it and Space Academy sported surprisingly good Visual effects for their time as Saturday morning fare. (Effects that some reports stated were comparable to some of the big screen sci-fi of that era) The sound effects, of course, were stock Saturday morning cartoon fare. But I always loved the sound of hearing a Starfire or Seeker fire up their engines.

Jason of Star Command was the spin-off to Space Academy, first starting out as a mini-show (usually only 15 minutes long) on a montage Saturday morning show which also sported an animated version of Isis with a couple of other heroes. It eventually got to become its own stand alone half-hour sci fi adventure show. (In fact, it seemed to do so well that there would be advertisements played at night for an upcoming Saturday show.)

Ahhhh....me youth,

Luckily that issue was left behind when we discovered a more serious topic argueing over which animal was more intelligent; a chimp or a dog. My friend was such a dork, everyone knows a chimp is more intelligent. Duh.

Yeah I love the series and Man From Atlantis too. :)

Krystal

Voyagers was a pretty cool show.
Meeno Peluce used to play the rogue kid in the television series of the Bad News Bears. And Jon Erik Hexum went on to play a Soldier of Fortune in some long forgotten action show that used Bonnie Tyler's "Hero" as the theme song. Jon Erik Hexum killed himself accidentally when he was playing Russian Roulette with a pistol that was supposed to be loaded with blanks. Sad news.

Ya know, it's funny, I was trying to remember the name of that montage show. It was okay. Secret Empire was my favorite because of its stylistic approach. Black and White in the Cowboy world above, and full color in the high tech underground world. Sound effects taken from Battlestar Galactica for the Secret Empire's high tech weaponry..

I'm Australian, and I hadn't heard of Pheonix Five until I read about it in a British book! Given that it was made so long ago (1976, I believe?) it'll either be rotting in a vault somewhere, or it was wiped long ago (ABC did that with a lot of their shows, as did many Aussie channels, as sales and rerun potential for local shows was pretty limited back then). I'd love to see it if it does exist though!

Sad thing tends to be that unless a local show ran a long time, it usually doesn't get rerun. Even on cable.

Oh and shout outs to Brimstone, S: AAB and Crusade!

Wow, does this thread bring back memories (some of which should have just stayed buried in my subconscious where they belonged!) But four pages in and no props for The Greatest American Hero? ("Quick, Ralph, put on the suit!")

In the category of Saturday a.m. stuff I'd have to add in Land of the Lost. For a Krofft kiddie show it was very well done and rather high-concept. They did a remake a few years back but it wasn't very good, IMHO.
