You have to show Saga Of A Star World first, IMO or else it's just about impossible trying to make a newcomer understand or connect with the series.

If the newcomer is giving Galactica only one chance to catch him I would go with "Living Legend". :D (You got to love the edit function-see next post) It's the best story in terms of action and feelings among the group.

I think Saga of A Star World should be watched first if they are committed to watch the whole series. I fear however that a novice today may be happy with the first half of Saga and then get bored or annoyed with the Carillon half. To me Saga of A Star World is two episodes spliced together. The first half is the best Galactica offers, the second half some of the worst.

The correct title is "Living Legend" BTW. While I would indeed consider that just about the best episode of the series, next to "Hand Of God", I still think that the series can not be communicated properly without "Saga" first.

I don't buy the argument that the second part is Galactica at it's worst. The Terra Trilogy is Galactica at its worst and should be avoided when showing to friends IMO.

Before I came to the internet Battlestar world I never tried to memorize the real titles. I still refer to the shows outside these sites as things like the "Pegasus episode", "Original movie", "Bootlegger Episode", "Count Iblis Episode", "Terra Episode" etc. :D ;)

I bet most people who come here for the first time wouldn't know "Hand of God" from "Foot of God" even if they could tell you about every episode.

I've seen every Star Trek TOS, TNG, and DS9 episode. In the case of TOS and TNG multiple times. I still don't know the titles of them. :duck:

Sometimes I still look up which Battlestar story people are talking about when it has "God" in the title. As for the "Magnificient Warriors", where did that title come from? :duck:

The "Magnificent Warrirors" title is meant to be a knock-off on "The Magnificent Seven."

You're right on Antelope. Thats exactly how I remember the episodes. :)
"The First One."
"Bootlegger Starbuck"
"Apollo's girlfriend gets killed"
"Ice Planet"
"The Pegasus One"
etc etc

Oh yeah, and the only good Galactica 1980;

"Starbuck makes a Cylon friend."

Antelope I think The "Hand of God" came from, if you were in the dome you would feel like you were riding in the hand of God. It is mentioned in the Deleted scene section on the DVD;)

If I could only choose Two episodes to show a new viewer it would have to be Saga of a Starworld, and The living Legend.

The other problem for me though is that I have not seen any but the 5 I own since they first aired  So I have completly forgotten them and they are a very vague memory (except for my audio tapes which sound atrocious after all these years!:/:

I was watching a DS9 episode on Spike TV last night and either I never seen it before or forgot about it. It was a nice surprise.

I would show 'The Living Legend' as well - but I agree that Saga should be shown - you need the background story from it (and I happen to like the background story - and the Terra episodes <the Terra Episodes may be due to a friend of mine from the BGC who passed away a few years ago. He loved the Eastern Alliance and brought it to life for me when we RP'd together>. I would show them to a newbie though =).

That's a good name! Before I came here I always referred to that episode as "Starbuck Marooned Episode"

I also liked the G-80 episodes I called:

"Remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Cylons on Halloween".

Although I love "Saga of a Star World", I can see how some might lose interest during the second half of the episode. If I could only show one episode, I might use "Gun on Ice Planet Zero". I know, in many respects, that its a sci-fi overhaul of "The Guns of Navarone", but it's still a fun episode and might really appeal to some of those who normally don't watch sci-fi. "The Living Legend" would be an excellent choice as well.

To give the background and some meat of the series, I'd consider showing a friend approximately the first two hours of Saga of a Star World (the first one, to those who remember it that way). I think that's about when they go through the Nova, just before arriving at Carrilon. If that piqued his or her interest, then I'd move to the Lost Planet of the Gods or Living Legend to give a little more flavor of the series.

I don't think I would show a first-time viewer SAGA but I would definitely show him/her the theatrical version of the premiere, which eliminates a lot of scenes that drag the story along (but are of definite interest to this BG fan, natch!).

I was thinking the other day about the summer of '79 or '80 when BG hit the theaters in Tucson and I sold a bunch of comic books to have the $$$ to see it over and over and over (and secretly record it on an audio tape player, to boot!). It was sooooo uplifting to experience the reaction of my fellow theater-goers to the final 10 or so minutes. When the Cylon reports to the Imperious Leader that "Apparently it was not as big of a surprise as we had hoped for," the entire audience laughed and cheered. Ditto the cheers when the base ship and Carillon went boom. I think it actually shocked me that they would react that way, as I was so used to people and critics slamming the series--yet here was obviously audiences that very much enjoyed the theaterical release. <sniff sniff>

"Living Legend" would probably be a second choice to show a first-time viewer; lots of good tension in that episode. I just wish the Pegasus' battle with the three base ships was a bit longer and more intense. It was over way too fast, IMO.

For me, I'd go with Living Legend.

I recently had a friend over and he went through my collection. He spotted my Battlestar Galactica DVD Set(Complete with cylon head) and asked me what it was about. I told him too sit down and He could find out for himself. I played Saga Of A Star World and he thought it was cool. He then borrowed my complete VHS tapes of the series.

I would show the very first one. There is no sense in showing any of the other episodes until they have seen the first one. I think it would spark their interest better.

First thing i would do is make sure you show and unedited version of Saga of a Star World. The unedited version flows much better and explains alot more than what was first shown to the fans. PLUS splice in other deleted scenes that are available on the DVD.

Then the next one i would choose would be the Hand of God. Simply because it is considered one of the best if not THE best episode of the series.
