If we assume that there are 12 Battlestars in the home fleet at the time of the false armistice and that at one time the colonials had at least six fleets (since we have reference to the 5th and 6th Fleet in TOS) then at one time the colonials may have had at least 72 Battlestars.
This is all speculation however since in our own society we have divisions on active duty today whose numbers can in no way be extrapolated to current military size. For example the 82nd Airborne Division was the 82nd U.S. Army division in World War I but as a result of it's reputation the division name has been retained in a U.S. Army with only 10 divisions.
Since TOS and various backstories imply the colonials were losing the war and that all known Battlestars were at the armistice point at the time Saga started one is left to assume all other Battlestars except the Pegasus are destroyed during the course of the 1,000 Yahrn War.
Also in the course of a thousand years of war who knows how many Battlestars were destroyed (or in the case of the Pegasus thought destroyed) remade and destroyed again.
Such a massive loss of Battlestars, warriors, and the civilian cost of such a war in which victory is probably not possible would give more credibility to the whole Saga of A Star World story. The people might not have been as naive as they appeared. Saga Baltar might not have been as evil as he was written in later episodes.
