I don't know if its been posted here or not (or that it really is BSG-related), but In Harm's Way is on AMC tonight at 7:30 (Pacific time - I don't know what time it is showing in other locales...)

Since the post several months ago about how the new mini tracked this movie, here is your chance to watch and decide for yourself...

A must see for any mini fan: Here is the show that more than Saga of A Star World was reimagined into SCIFIs Battlestar Galactica miniseries. :)

If you can please review the "In Harm's Way" thread before you watch it. Things will make so much sense.

If you want to see into the mind of Ron Moore and what he was trying to do you will understand much of it after watching "In Harm's Way".

If you hate the mini here's your chance to see how much the "reimagined" show is really a remake of a black and white classic.

I have to wonder if this is a coincedence or not.... It seems like ever since the mini premiered in December and it was determined that "In Harm's Way" was the basis for the characters in the BSG miniseries, that AMC has been showing IMW quite a bit lately. I've seen it on their listing time and again for the last few months. I even watched part of it one time, but didn't have time to finish.

I was already not a fan of "In Harm's Way" before the miniseries existed so hearing it served as the prime inspiration never struck me as a good sign.

The bad tone of the film got set right in the opening scene for me, when for the first time I saw a World War II movie that thinks a party taking place on December 6, 1941 had mid-1960s go-go music and dancing on the program. :)

I got the old In Harm's Way thread back up front in the Battlestar discussion section. Anyone new to the idea should take a look.

I think "In Harm's Way" runs fairly often in general but now that the word is out on the Galactica connection we just notice it more. AMC has been running a lot of John Wayne recently. I noticed Donavan's Reef is running just about as often. I like John Wayne movies in general, especially the older ones. Now that "In Harm's Way" has been under a microscope I can't watch it all the way through now. Sometimes you know a movie too well. I love "In Harm's Way" but think I will need at least a year so it can fade in my brain again!

That's probably why I don't buy DVDs. I can't watch anything over and over. I need to forget something and be surprised everytime. Now you know why I get something wrong about Galactica episodes from time to time!

If indeed IHW was the basis for RDM's version, then it is but one more proof, as if we needed any, that he just scavenges other people's work, and has no real creativity of his own.

AWWW...cut RM some slack, he made the Klingons respectable, and he killed Kirk.

Any fool could have done that!

Yes, but it takes a real fool to make it a death scene that makes a hero to generations look like he's not dying heroically.

Yeah... He killed off Kirk in a totally lame manner. Really bad writing there. He could have done ALOT better.

Though I did like what he did with the Klingons. I Like his work Next Generation. He's much better when he is respecting the work than when he tries to take over. And I mean no disrespect toward the new project. I consider that a totally different show than Galactica.

:)

Regarding Kirk- I don't hthink killing Kirk off was anything to be proud of. I may have lost alot of respect for the character with Shatner later performances, but the first run he was a really well acted character. (Minus a few glaring hammy scenes)

Moore made some of the good STTNG episodes. The movie where they killed Kirk however was pretty weak. The whole Nexus thing seemed a bit stupid to me.

On the scavaging the old. If the old is good then why not. I liked In Harm's Way and I liked the mini. A few weeks back I saw an Enterprise episode that was a rip off of STTOS, the episode with the half black/white guys. Both were good episodes.

I do notice that many do not like In Harm's Way. Maybe we see that people who wouldn't like In Harm's Way wouldn't like the mini and vice versa. Thus far I can't remember any posters that said they liked In Harm's Way but hated the mini.

You said it. With one stroke of the pen half of the franchise was lost. No wonder Enterprise is in such shape. If they had a clue instead of the April Fool's day about bringing Shatner back they should have really done so. He could have played an ancestor to his tos character, say Kirk's grandfather.

This thread has taken on a life of it's own.

I never cared for Kirk. I think it is a separate issue that Shatner, though he should never have been allowed to direct.

I wish they had killed Kirk off in a more shameful way, perhaps a fatal case of "shore leave."

Kirk is the entire tos franchise along with Spock and McCoy. Without these pioneer's Moore would never have had the chance to display his talents on ST:TNG and DS 9.

I agree that without the success of ST:TOS, there would have been no spin-offs.

I just never really liked Kirk as a character. McCoy, Spock, Scottie, and the Orion slave women were all more appealing to me.

I just liked him better in the series. I thought Shatner got kinda hammy in the movies. And yeah... I really didn't like how he directed that movie. Granted there was some SERIOUS budget problems. To the point where they had to design shots to avoid holes in the costumes they couldn't afford to wait to fix. And I did like some scenes. But well... there was ALOT of problems with that movie. First of all it had an odd number.

I think exactly the same way! William Shatner was great in the series. After the series he increasingly seemed to portray a characterature of his supposed real life persona in everything he did. He finally reached Rock Bottom during his stint on Third Rock From the Sun. In his defense his over the top persona is paying his bills. His commercials for Priceline being an obvious example.

I like all of Star Trek TOS but on the TOS based motion picture side I only liked Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country, and that Whale movie. I wish they kept Kirk alive and never made the TNG movie where they killed him. I do think however his public persona was starting to damage their ability to use him in future shows.

Having an episode in Enterprise with an old man played by William Shatner talking to a young boy named James about boldly going in space would be a nice touch and a sure ratings rooster for a stressed franchise.

is that a scene I missed? I woulda loved to have seen it!

Oh btw- The movies you named are movies 2, 4, and 6. THE CURSE OF THE ODD NUMBERED TREK FILMS LIVES!!!!

Btw did you really love ALL of the Trek series? Even BONK BONK? Or the FRIENDLY ANGEL COME TO ME one?
:D

Btw I like the black and white faced episode too. It really fits the modern world. If only you replace Frank Gorshins character with Sharon and make his prey Arafat. Its a perfect match!

I thought up that scene an hour ago! For now it's just an antelope fan fiction.

I liked even the Friendly Angel show although it would not be on my top ten list. Personally the Star Trek TOS show I liked the least was the original Harry Mudd story. My favorite episode was the one where the Romulans are introduced. My wife likes the black/white guy episode the best.
