View Full Version : Prediction of when we will get our movie

I fully support a new show. I believe it will happen. I have absolute confident in that.

But before I dress up in my armor and sharpen my sword and do battle for the revival again I have come to realize that must happen before victory is possible. We need to see Larson and/or Desanto to come out of their caves. For without them, we can't do squat. How can we make a movie happen without them? Its impossible. NOTHING can happen without them. Not unless you want to see a third galactica made with Apollo in a bra.

A successful revival movement MUST revolve around these guys. You can't move a colonial pebble without them.

Right now Larson appears to be unable to launch Galactica on his own. he seems to lack the resources. If he could I think he would be doing it already. But he doesn't have the resources YET. That will come if he can get Desanto.

Desanto, right now is very busy. He is contracted to do Transformers and Xmen3. And a legal contract means he is tied up for a few years. So to stoke the fires now would be useless for him. Cause he can't break away to do it. And we don't want the fires to peak before he can start.

Hatch btw at one time was able to get funding and could have started production, but that was curtailed by legal rights. And right now he isn't about to risk more of his own money to launch another big attempt. His efforts were noble, but he's living his own life now and leaving it to others. Though I'm sure he would reprise Apollo.

And that's about it.

So any revival will have to probably wait until Desanto finishes his current contractual agreements. Then he can team with Larson who owns the rights and bring the old Galactica back.

Just be patient folks. It will happen.

So until I see that Desanto and Larson get REALLY serious, I'm hanging up the sword, mothballing my armor, and I'm just out there to be real and to have fun. And I want to spread that joy to as many people as I can. And I'm out to make as many friends as I can who will enjoy the old show. And avoid the angry flames that tend to burn people out.

:salute:

If Larson owns the rights then there's the answer. All you need is someone who can find the funding and pay Larson for the rights.

I have read that Hatch has claimed in the past that he can get the funding. If that is true he needs to talk to Larson. Since it doesn't seem on Hatch's agenda today I don't think it will happen.

If DeSanto is "busy" for the next few years I think we might as well forget about him.

It sounds to me like Larson is simply waiting to see how the Moore universe goes. If it goes well he can sell the rights for a profit to someone willing to make Moore universe movies once the series ends.

If the series tanks I think those rights will end up in a dusty file cabinet somewhere never to see the light of day again.

Antelope,

I'm glad not everyone has this "gloom and doom" mindset. I, for one, do not believe that the sun rises and sets on Ron Moore's version of Battlestar Galactica. The network that it appears on simply does not have the audience reach of a major network.

It was mentioned on another thread that we have to reach out to the folks that watch "ER" and "Friends", etc. I agree with that assessment to the extent that, for a motion picture to be successful, it's going to rely on a great deal of 'walk-up' sales, i.e., 'casual fans' going to see it. I look at tangibles like the TOS DVD sales as evidence that a fanbase exists that would enjoy seeing the "old girl" fly again.

(Apologies to the ladies in the house............just a figure of speech!) :D

Best wishes to Moore and Co. on the new show. I don't feel, though, that they have ALL of the cards. There are several more, left in the deck, waiting to be drawn.

Postponement is the assumption you will be alive tomorrow. Tomorrow may not make that assumption.

If BSG is to fly, someone like Richard needs to step up now. Windows of opportunity are always closed when night falls. To wait for "tomorrow' is to miss that opportunity, now and forever. If Mr. DeSanto will be unavailable for the foreseeable future, BSG should look to someone else, someone whose sun rises and sets on the dream, today.

This is a big world. There are many big people in it. I say, don't wait for the sun to rise next week.

I'll pass on one of my favorite sayings.....

"One door closes, another one opens...."

I know that it sounds like "cracker barrel" philosophy, but this little phrase has kept me going during the times when things just never seem to work out for me. The very thing you seek may be just around the corner, but if you don't go around that corner, you will never know....

Patience people, Patience.

We've waited this long, we can wait a little longer.

Desanto is VERY interested in this product. And he will finish his contracts in a few years. Then he will be free. He creates movies for a living. After he finishes with Transformers and Xmen3 he will be looking to do his next project. And at that time Larson will have this hot property burning a hole in his pocket. He has invested alot of money he won't get back until SOMEONE makes his movie.

Battlestar is in a good position.

:D

Just be the kind of Fandom that makes Desanto proud to be a part of. Spread good will. Spread the love of a good show. Be a welcoming ambassador for the show to all people.

Things are going as they should. But patience is required. :)

Baltar; No Apollo, I am your father.

Apollo: NO!!!! It can't be!!!!

Balter: Search the Force, Apollo. You know this to be true.

I am 100% with Muffit on this one. Although I like the mini I love the universe of TOS. I really think that the sun is setting on the TOS universe. Right now is the best time to bring it back. Battlestar is once again in the public consciousness thanks to the mini. The mini universe however has not replaced TOS...YET.

Most of the TOS fan base is over 35 years old. Every year the fan base demographics will look worse to the bean counters.

If the mini is successfull it will replace TOS as what most people think "Battlestar Galactica" is. In two years no one who writes a check will fund the "old" version.

I read that Richard Hatch once claimed he had the backing of $70 million to make a Continuation. Personally I don't believe it. If he or anybody could get that much money behind them they need to talk with Larson and make the movie now!

If Larson waits a few years to exercise his rights he will either be able to sell them to the mini universe owners at a substantial profit without incurring any risk to himself or he will be worse off than he is today with no one willing to poney up the money for a three time cancelled show.

It's now or never. There's nothing us fans can do. Either those in the industry that say they believe in TOS need to do this today or we need to admit that all our hopes for the franchise are rolling with the dice at the SCIFI channel.

I love the efforts of all involved to bring the TOS universe back. I am thankful especially to all those putting their personal money into Colonial Fan Force. Only one person however needs to stand up and put his cards on the table. That man is Glen Larson. Either make it or sell it! Playing for time is a bet on the mini universe.

Antelope, my old friend, you are the master of the forked tongue.

On the one hand you applaud the efforts of CFF and call for the immediate support of a TOS BSG movie. On the other hand you say there's nothing we can do about it.

Which is it? These are mutually exclusive statements. It is either one or the other.

I got into an argument once (I'm not trying to here, honestly) with a person who was all for throwing up their hands and walking away, letting TPTB make their choices. What I said to that person was this: You are entitled to your opinion, but if you're not interested in helping the cause, get the h*** out of the way.

The idea that we can't do anything about it is mistaken, I truly believe. In order for the movie to be made Larson (and DeSanto) need the show of support from the fans - the very people who are willing to spend their hard-earned money on a TOS movie. That is Truth - and that won't happen if we take the attitude that there's nothing we can do.

I'm putting money and not an inconsiderable amount of my time into CFF because I firmly believe that the sooner we show them that support the better our chances are of seeing a TOS movie made; I agree with your assessment that the longer we are silent the more it will appear we're not interested.

So - what do you say, Antelope? Are you going to contribute to CFF or are you a throw-up-your-hands kind of guy?

My good friend Dawg: :salute:

I know you are not trying to get in an argument. We are both sincere. :)

Since Day 1 of my existence in the world of internet BSG I have been consistent on this issue: No matter what your opinion is on the mini I believe the franchise will live or die based on its success or failure. That may not be other people's opinion but it is mine. Time will tell.

I do applaud the efforts of the Colonial Fan Force:
That doesn't mean I think it has any impact. In a way I look at it the way you would the battle of the Alamo or the charge of the light brigade. Something very noble and to be commended but something utterly futile. It amazes me to see that people will put their families money to support any TV show be it Galactica or Angel. Even if I was inclined to contribute my wife would shoot me on the spot for considering it! :D

The only person we need to influence is Glen Larson. He needs to say what he honestly thinks. Does he want to make a continuation or is he holding out to sell the rights? He is the only one that can make a theatre movie. There have been many efforts to influence him already. He is "the power that be". If he wants to make the show, what is he doing to make it? It looks like he does not have the ability or desire to make the show at this time. As such the only thing I can conclude is that he is gambling on the Moore universe so he can sell them the theatrical rights at some future time.

So where am I: I hope I am wrong and the Colonial Fan Force accomplishes its goals. I wish you all good luck and commend your efforts. :salute:
My wife buys lottery tickets every time the California lottery goes over $30 million. I think it is a waste of money but everytime she buys them I HOPE she wins! :)

My friend Dawg, I will not stand in your way. I am in the stands cheering. On this however I am a spectator not a player.

If someone really knows Glen Larson and I mean really knows not just a fan, they should take him out to dinner have a couple of beers or some wine and find out what he really wants to do. If Richard Hatch and him are really friends and Hatch can do what he claims in the production money committment arena why don't we already have our continuation?

A good dinner and some beer must be a lot cheaper than an ad in Variety.

I also believe as I stated that if Glen Larson is going to make a continuation he needs to do it now. The mini universe will either superceed TOS or destroy the franchise. In either case its now or never.

Unless the Colonial Fan Force can raise the money to buy the theatrical rights and then offer them for free to any producer that will create a continuation the Colonial Fan Force will support, I don't see the efforts of CFF coming to anything other than frustration.

Good luck. I hope I am wrong.

You lack one item of information, apparently.

Glen Larson wants to do a movie. He said so at Galaction in October. He also said he wants to work with Tom DeSanto (who is, himself, a TOS fan). He spent money on obtaining the movie rights.

He doesn't need to be influenced; he's already there.

But he also said (and I'm paraphrasing here) that there must be measurable support for TOS after the mini airs. Without that there will be no movie.

So Glen's ready to go. Tom's on record as wanting to do this (he actually nearly got to, once). Now's the time for the fans to show support, so that Glen and Tom can approach a studio and show them we're there and waiting.

See?

We can make a difference. And if a movie is what we want to see, we've got to say so in a way they can actually see it.

We are still in the same paradyme:

Glen Larson SAYS he wants to make a movie but is making no effort to MAKE a movie.

He says he wants to work with Desanto but Desanto is not available for the next two years.

That gives him two years to sit around doing nothing while he sees what happens with the mini universe.

Book, DVD sales, and the 4,000,000 people who watched the mini told the studios more than any effort that at most a few hundred people in the form of an ad or two will make. All that you and the other 4,000,000 already did proved the case. The three major Galactica web sites prove the case everyday.

Glen Larson, at the moment is not ready to do anything and Tom Desanto has moved on for the time being.

The only thing Larson needs is a producer or two, something Richard Hatch has said in the past he could deliver.

Glen Larson does not want to make a continuation at this time for reasons only he knows. He could do it this year or any year in the past if he wanted since he purchased the rights.

The fans have proved their desires. It's about time Glen Larson proved his or sold the rights to someone who will.

I read about a lot of people who speak a good word at conventions and then never cooperate to make things happen.

When CFF buys the ad may I suggest it read:

LARSON, Make Battlestar Galactica or sell the rights to someone who will!

Richard Hatch has said countless times he would make the movie if he owned the rights. I am not his biggest fan but I bet he would make the movie if he could.

Tom -

I would have to agree with you there - I'm amazed at how everyone thinks that EVERYTHING is posted on the net. There is always someone out there in Podunk, (insert state or country) that assumes that they can sit at home a cull reliable information from the internet.

If a film studio does make an announcement, it is usually in a roundabout way, unless they are purposely trying to garner support for a project and generate "buzz" to sell tickets when it does come out. I wasn't around online BSG fandom in those days, but I've gotten the impression that info was hard to come by regarding a new BSG production until the RDM version was announced.

Understandably, Skiffy & RDM wanted to gauge interest and build support for their project - hence there was a boatload of information to be found.

From what I've seen of the past year and a half of online BSG fandom and some of the backlash that could come from releasing info in advance - I would bet that Glen Larson or Tom DeSanto probably wouldn't make many detailed announcments until the project was almost released. That way, folks would almost have to go see it to find out what it was about, instead of making up their minds ahead of time to go, or not to go.

It's just idle curiosity, but I keep wondering what the ratings for the miniseries would have been if they had kept the project under wraps right up until it aired - My bet would be that the "curiosity factor" would have gotten them a bigger rating. I think that's why info on nuGalactica is so tight only a month prior to the UK airing date.

Who knows?

Best,
Bryan

It usually takes a few years of pre-production work before you can START production. Tom Cruise said he spent a YEAR in japan learning avout its culture before he began work on his Samurai film. So I don't think this is taking too long.

Who wants a piece of crap rushed production after waiting for 25?

Also there are always many hurdles which we can't see that need to be overcome before this thing gets busy.

First, I gotta say that I agree in the idea that sometimes pre-production takes a long time. If an excellent pre-production operation were started just today, it probably wouldn't be until DeSanto was ready until the pre-production would be finished.
:salute:
While we are in dream mode, however, I wonder what BSG would be like if some one like the guy who did Lord of the Rings got a hold of it. I think it may be a notable improvement in drama style than the Mini.
:duck:
And then, while we are still in dream mode, I think that if Lucas ever really got interested and was offered the opportunity to do BSG, He would really know to come at it with a different angle than SW. . . well, except for when it came to the Man with Nine Lives episode . . . . .

What I've been told, just to be as clear as possible and not to keep up with the vague I know something you don't crap that we've been subjected to for Lord knows how long.

Take this for what you will:

Desanto, as of a few months ago, said he can't do anything until Moore's series runs it's course.

By the inferrence of this piece of information it seems that Tom DeSanto still wants to do BSG on TV, but obviously can't pitch it again while NuGalactica is being made.

Common sense, and reading into things leads me to believe that DeSanto wouldn't have to work with Larson on a TV project, just as RDM and Eick don't have to work with him on NuGalactica thus giving DeSanto full control.

Now what Glen wants to do movie wise, I don't know, he keeps his cards pretty close to his chest.

But really what I'm saying is ignore everything that I've just posted and anyone else might post online and keep writing your letters and sending your CFF postcards (swing by www.colonialfanforce.org for more info) and buying any new TOS merchandise that comes out and DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING UNTIL YOU SEE AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM AN OFFICIAL SOURCE!

Best,

Peter

Well, there are two things I don’t like about that. Seems we TOS only types would have to hope for an early cancellation of AM. Sorry I don’t want to go back to that place. I want to continue to believe our fortunes are not tied to the new show. Secondly how does one pitch a show when one with the same name has been recently canceled?

DeSanto is my choice for producing a big budget, big screen Battlestar Galactica movie. This man understands Battlestar Galactica but if he is too busy sorry there are other producers.

For now lets just press with CFF efforts and see where that goes. If the new show is your bag enjoy.

I would really really HEAVILY suggest trusting when Don tosses us a bone.

:bone:

:D

Tom -

You don't have to tell me that twice - I learned a long time ago, that Don doesn't pass something on unless there's something to it. He's never been wrong yet and I'm not about to start doubting now...

Best,

With respect to Don and anyone else on the bone tossing (myself included, as I've been party to the bone tossing too), this fandom has seen a lot of bone tossing and in the end have had to suck on empty air, and I think after 26 years and so much disappointment EVERY fan, not just a select few, deserves to chow down on the meat and not the bones! ;)

And if Don thinks there's a chance of a miracle on the horizon then I'm all for it, after all, that's the fabric of miracles - the impossible! :)

Best to all,

Peter

Hey Peter, nice avatar.

I see you've been into the BG game.

;)

Yeah, Don, I haven't got the game but I've got the trailer as a Quicktime file and that's a really neat Big G. It's a crying shame that they didn't finish the model in the Foundation trailer so we could see more than the right landing bay!

Hope all is well with you and you are modelling like a madman.

Unfortunately that's not the case, most of the FX work now has been shipped to Canada in a cost cutting move. Zoic is still a player in the FX but they loose more every day. So much for that emmy.

I'd heard that. I thought you guys were still doing the bulk of the FX though.

God willing and wind blowing in the right direction you guys will be involved with the next incarnation of TOS when it happens.

A lot of the talk deals with DeSanto's schedule is it unheard of for a producer to be working on two projects near simultaneously?

Yup. Though right now he's busy writing AND producing Transformers and Xmen3. He's also executive producing Logan's Run.

So he's a pretty busy camper for the next year or two. He probably won't have time to work on Galactica until sometime 2006. (In my best guess) But it is very high on his "I want to do" list.

Well ... George Lucas will soon be out of work. Maybe he'll grab the reigns on a franchise he believed ripped him off so many years ago ... ;)

Actually, Lucas & Spielberg have found a new screenplay for Indiana Jones 4. Sounds like they'll be busy for awhile. I wonder what James Cameron or Kevin Smith are doing right now.

Cameron will probably be looking to restore the Terminator franchise (although T3 was not so bad.) Kevin Smith? Hmmm....whatever he does, I just hope it's funny.

Between the two, I wouldn't mind seeing James Cameron take the Galactica reigns.

After seeing the "Incredibles" it suddenly occured to me in a semi-drunken stupor ... can a Galactica TOS continuation be made with animated CGI?? All we need is a voice for Adama!

... did I mention I thought that up in a semi-drunken stupor?

You know something.....?

It wasn't all that long ago that Fox was the network that was gonna host a Galactica remake - not Universal or Sci Fi.

Just because Universal isn't keen on the film idea, doesn't mean that nobody else will buy into it. I wonder how many places they had to shop it around the first time for the DeSanto/Singer series before Fox said yes...

I still have hope that someday we will get a movie!

Best regards,
Bryan

A scene from the Lucas Battlestar

Baltar: Apollo, did Tigh tell you what happened to your father?

Apollo: He told me you killed my father.

Baltar; No Apollo, I am your father.

Apollo: NO!!!! It can't be!!!!

Balter: Search the Force, Apollo. You know this to be true.

Oh, sorry. Wrong movie.
 :yikes:

Well, I'm positive thinking we will see it sooner or later, all points to later but is better than never.

I really like this topic and it's great to speculate on the production that we want and when we will get it.
I have no faith in Universal anymore when it comes to TV because even though I respect those fans of moore's and their right to watch and support it, I still think that an updated , well written production that falls in the same Universe as the original Galactica, could have been a much bigger thing but I also know that I'm not alone on this one either.

We know that Desanto tried not to long ago for a cartoon continuation so that should tell the fan base that this man won't let his dream go of doing this franchise justice and in doing so, will fullfill many of our dreams in the process.

2 years? 2 years isn't nothing when it seems just like yesterday when Desanto and Singer announced that they were bringing Galactica back and that was well over 2 years ago.

Until then, we can keep the original alive and kicking by doing more fan things like writing stories, web sites, CGI, Fan projects just to name a few and as soon as I can free up some time, I will jump back into it with both feet in another Galactica audio story. I'm still trying to perfect this clone thing so that I can start now. lol

Don, thanks for the ray of hope. That's what this fan base needs. I know it did wonders for me in thinking that we haven't lost yet. :)

I would say animated before I would say cartoon. Just saw the 3rd Ad for CFF in the new Dreamwatch. I think it is #5, but it has the new addresses to write to. I think it would be cool if Galactica hit the big screen on Sept 17, 2008.

I'm sorry, but even with the advances of animation today an animated BG isn't the way to go. Unless they plan to put out a watered down kids version for Saturday morning tv, it's a step backwards for the continuation effort in my mind. As someone else noted, the majority of the original actors are still around and unlike the original Star Trek actors, are not that old. So a live action continuation makes much more sense. I haven't seen how some of them look these days - except Richard and Dirk, but I'm sure some can 'get in tv shape' with enough notice to do a real show.

They say Patience is a Virtue. But then again, as a fan of the original, that'd make me an original sinner, so how would I know what a Virtue was in the first place?

Guess these days I'm sort of running up and down the aisles.

I've not given up hope.

I don't know what form we will see it return in: who can second guess changes when technology moves so fast and the process of making films takes so long?

Animated films are becoming more adult as disney looses its grip on cute pap and has to move with the times.
The Baby Boomers are a demographic force to be reckoned with: the spend dollar moves with them as they age and what they want will have more sway than the traditional teen market. And the BB's are now in positions of power: 45+ aged people run things and make the decisions the 18yo are given to watch.
This creep in demographics might be our best friend, along with the rise of comic book franchises and fantasy on the big screen that have persuaded the bean counters that there is money to be made from adults watching stuff previously dismissed as children's fare.
.
I don't know of course, I am speculating. (something SF is good at :D ) but my point is I am prepared to be surprised by someone who takes a chance on this becasue I believe there is good indicators that it is possible.. Indicators that did not extist 10 years ago.

There is still a good story to be told, and I hope it will find its voice.

Cheers,
Lara

Absolutely!!
Reading, and writing, fanfic has been the one thing that has kept the dream alive for me, but it also sharpens the loss sometimes, when you catch yourself thinking that someones story would be just so great on the screen as well as in words.

Cheers,
