I've been keeping an eye on this for a while now..... since the UK *region 2* DVD box set of the Original Battlestar Galactica series was released in January, I was curious if anyone else had noticed that certain features were missing - namely the audio commentary on 'Saga Of A Star World' and deleted scenes from some of the episodes (which are on the *region 1* US set).
So... people were asking questions on http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/ and someone who has now subsequently claimed to have worked for Universal sometime either prior to or around the release stated the following -
The 1 hour of deleted scenes and alternate scenes that are missing on the R2 Boxsets were left out for a reason "The episodes these scenes are taken from were deemed as not popular enough in the UK to include them on the Bonus disc" (PAL having a higher Resolution takes up more space on a disc then NTSC) It was either a lower resolution for the documentary's or losing the deleted scenes, I'll go with the higher resolution because the deleted footage not featured on the R2/R4 boxsets is nothing to miss really because they are all from bad episodes of the series" (All of the deleted footage from the classic "well written"episodes are featured on the bonus disc).
I can't guarantee 100% the validity of this news, but surely - are they the best judge of what the viewing public can or can't see by deciding to withold footage that other countries can see? If you're a fan of a show - you would want as much as is feasible, even if it is on double-sided DVDs (US - (4*2 sided)+2 single=10 DVDs worth vs UK - 7 single DVDs worth). To me, it just smacks of cheapness & lack of imagination.
All the best,
