I only saw part of Billy's intro song, which was funny.
And Katherine Zeta-Jones dress was beautiful: flowing, beaded beautifully, looked like something she could dance all night in comfortably. I hope all the dresses this year went for such classic lines, I hate the taped-into the dress, the upper body might just escape-look that a lot of the dresses have had the past few years. Much prefer more classic evening gowns.
Jewels, who's sentenced to watch Bob the Builder for the next hour. *sigh*
Peter Jackson better get best Picture & pref. best director too!

"Spirited Away" by Hayao Miyazaki was nominated in 2003 and won. Animated films must be
“An animated feature film is defined as a motion picture of at least 70 minutes in running time with a significant number of the major characters animated, and in which animation figures in no less than 75% of the picture's running time.”
Believe there was a controversy last year about including "Stuart Little 2" on the short list. Read this:

Was there any doubt LOTR would win Best Picture? :) After 10 other awards, seemed pretty logical. Now it's tied with Titanic and Ben Hur for most Oscars ever.
Bill Murray looked truly hurt when Jean Penn won Best Actor. I think he thought the Academy was going to give him a long overdue nod. Also Johnny Depp looked pretty disappointed. Charlize was the obvious choice for Best Actress, takes a lot of guts to make yourself look that bad on screen when you're actually beautiful.
I was hoping Johnny Depp would win. I thought he was really great (Sean should've won for I Am Sam last time). Lost in Translation was a bizarre movie, can't imagine why it won best original screenplay and had so many nominations. I'm happy for Sophia, it's just the movie really was kinda aimless, although it was entertaining a bit. The one thing I liked about it was the platonic nature of Bill's relationship with the young girl. Very rare nowadays.
I think quite often the Academy has to pass on an obvious choice for Hollywood-politics reasons, then gets stuck the next year having to make up for it by giving the award posthumously so to speak for a less than ideal performance, thus creating yet another problem with overlooking the right choice for that year. The Awards are neat and all, but I wonder if it's worth hurting so many each and every year.
It's fun to win; it hurts to lose; it's devastating when you aren't even noticed.

Hmm, didn't know that. Well, I really don't think a person's religious or political views should ever affect how we reward them for their acting talent. I thought it was a really cold blow to skip Russel Crowe last year just because of a remark he made. (I noticed they even put him in the front row, pretty cold). The Awards are supposed to be for talent alone, aren't they? There are many athletes and singers of whom we might question their personal lives, but we do them honor for the efforts they make nonetheless.
Well, like I said, the Oscars have always had a Hollywood-politics bent to them. Occasionally those who really deserve them get honored. To this day I shake my head when I think Annie Hall beat Star Wars.
I really think there should be an award for comedy, and that they should reinstate the award for best child actor/actress. Comedy enriches our lives every bit as much as drama. And children shouldn't have to go up against 35 year old stars. Both Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland were given child awards. The little kid in Sixth Sense really deserved one.
Sorry for my rant! Cheers all!

Still, this thread IS a great read. Most entertaining. I'm not much of an awards fan; I thought LA Confidential deserved a 'Best Picture' but the Big Billion Dollar Boat beat it out. Plus the preachy Hollywood types are too political given a microphone and a podium.
BUT the ice has been broken!! A FANTASY film won a Best Picture!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now if we can just get a Science Fiction film to be appreciated by the Academy...
(and it should be known, I hold absolutely NO hope that Lucas will be responsible for that...)
