A type of Colonial Champagne? A type of Whiskey? Could it even be some sort of Java with some sort of Kobolian-kicker added to it? Just one of those little questions that sometimes come up. (Sign of an over-active imagination, or under-used, depending on your perspective.)

Perhaps bubbly (came in something that looked like a champagn bottle) was fermented (the longer the better - smoother, perhaps more alcoholic), sweet (according to some definitions I've seen).
I suppose it's possible it's something of a cross between champagne and good bourbon. Maybe.....

The writer's guide at Sheba's Galaxy claims it is closer to Scotch, but the only sure thing is that it is "the good stuff."
They had in the guide a BSG name for a beer-like beverage.
Another thing to concider is the length of time it could spend in the bottle.
That episode with the "original sinners" (again, could be the long term loss of long term memory) had cases of the stuff sitting for centuries. Wine or beer or mead could not handle that duration of aging. It would have to be a distilled beverage. Though the sweetness could indicate it is like a barley wine or sack mead, I do not think either beverage could handle the prolonged aging.
Also, according to the guide, it was ambrosa, not ambrosia.

Does schanpps improve with age?
Perhaps something distilled with a pasteurised sweetener (fruit/honey) added.

Schnapps is fine with me.
Recently something was mentioned about Galactica Cafe and coffee-drinkers, and I the thought got to me of Viper-Pilots coming in from a very long patrol, feeling as if they had fallen out of a Bill Mauldin, Willie and Joe drawing, trudging up to the refreshment station and ordering something hot and straight and black.

Ambrosia is a product of my homeland England.
To call it by it's full name "Ambrosia Devon Custard" and goes very well with many a pudding especially Strawberry tart.
