I basically wound up checking two-thirds of the list, but for my "Other" - I would like to throw in Lost in Space. I know that it's full of "cheese" and "corn", but it was my first SciFi series that I ever saw at the tender age of five. Muffit would never forgive me if I didn't mention one of "our" favorite shows!
I'm having a ball watching the First Season LIS DVD set these days!
Best to all,

I like most star trek variants cept the last season or two of ds9, babylon 5, lexx, FARSCAPE!!!, Red Dwarf..... and:
The Other:
stargate, stargate, stargate, stargate... :D
and lotsa space anime (Gundam Wing for ex), transformers >.<
Firefly... erm... Crusade, 1st two seasons of andromeda...
WHen i was younger i really liked the half hour sci-fi teen show Space Cases (sings the theme... 'stuck aboard a mystery ship, which soon was sucked through a spacial rip, and now their stuck on a long, long trip,), and Animorphs (there was a short lived tv show on nickelodeon of the book series)
Sci-Fi
February 9th, 2004, 06:17 PM
Since I enjoy just about all sci-fi, I really don't have any favorites. If you include cartoons and animation, I would strongly suggest picking up the dvd's for Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles. The story arcs and characters are very strong and interesting. The fan following and support for a continuation is as or more rabid as some of the other more well known/publicized programs.
Each of the programs listed in the poll has it's strengths and weaknesses and a different way of story telling. Just about every show, sci-fi or not, has a "filler" or "clip" episode as well as memorable ones. It all depends on whether the viewer is drawn in by the vision of the writers, depth of the characters, and the overall and minor story arcs. Of course there are programs that are so bad, they become hilarious or even achieve cult status. How many people remember "Space Mutiny" (http://crow-t-robot.home.mindspring.com/reviews_s08_ep820.html)? Just about all the BSG special effects and even the ships were used...lol.

I forgot about V but liked it when it came out. Read an article once that said the writer based it on the then ongoing war against communism in Central America. Believe it or not the bad guy aliens represented the U.S. and the freedom fighters were the communist. Not my version of history but a good show none the less. I liked all versions of Star Trek but have to admit Enterprise in particular and to some extent Voyager and DS9 became hit or miss on good storylines. I am a little surprised Stargate isn't in the poll. I bet that is the best scifi show on television at the moment. I watched most of the Space: Above and Beyond episodes. I kept waiting for it to get better but it never seemed to get there. It was too dark. I think there are some good lessons in Space: Above and Beyond for the new Galactica series. A dark real world is good but some cheer and comedy have to be there somewhere if people are going to watch week after week. I wasn't a big Babylon 5 fan at first but it grew on me. Loved the episodes after the first season but it burned itself out near the end. I think it was a good example of a show that should have ended at the end of a war and left it at that. I think Star Trek DS9 did a good job ending their series although a multi-episode war is not as easy to syndicate after a series is over (If you know the end why watch the middle). I think a lot of the success of the X-files was that most of the stories are free standing but a fraction lead you on a bigger overall story. You need the big story for the original seasons but rerun episodes are best free standing.

Well, if you going to mention all the show from the 80's....add Powers of Matthew Star, Manimal, Auotman...and of course, Starman.
...Shazam??...did they make a primetime show for that? I remember the Saturday morning one with Isis, Bigfoot and Wildboy, Ark II, Space Academy/Jason of Star Command.

Whoops, I totally Forgot Docter Who, it declined very sharply after Peter Davison left. Then again no series is perfect , just compare the first season of Space 1999 with the silly second season, the third and bizarre season of Star Trek. In a way it may have been good that BG didn't continue as some of these shows ended up sullying themselves...

I've always been a fan of this show even since it was broadcast in 1970 (I was 10 back then). Even though it doesn't have the broad appal that "Space:1999" does, I still enjoy watching the episodes now and then. I only have the first half of the series on DVD and will buy the second half as soon as I am done watching my LIS DVDs.
"UFO" is in the process of gearing up for a re-make - I wonder how it will fare in the "re-imagining" process?
Best to all,

Well does any one remember project UFO or cliffhanger or was that cliffhangers? :)
I loved those shows and was surprised to find out that they didn't last long. I guess when your a kid, shows seem to last forever. It may not be sci fi but I loved watching the Hardy boys Nancy drew mysteries that was on right before Galactica if I'm not mistaken. One of my guilty pleasures was Land of the lost when I was a kid and about a year or two ago, I found a site called GalaxyTV.com that played the episodes. Even though it was cheesy, I still liked it and it felt like I was a kid again .:)
GalaxyTV.com seems to be gone now :(

Thanks for the pictures. That moonbase interceptor was the craft I was thinking of. Even the paint scheme on that model looks similar to the TOS viper. I remembered the bulbous nose being different. I would be curious if that interceptor was an inspiration to whoever designed the original viper.
Anne Lockhardt of Sheba fame had a guest star role on one episode of Buck Rogers. She played a charcater that came off a bit ditzy. I have always been curious if the real Anne is ditzy or not. She always seemed a bit emotional and ditzy in everything I've seen her in (which honestly isn't much). I wonder if that is good acting for the role or the real her coming through the same every time. What I've seen posted about her from the few people that met her say she is a very nice and friendly woman.

In the Trek vein, I can't really say I was a big fan of ST:Next Gen. Too many plotlines stolen from Classic Treck. Plus, I like continuity in my sci-fi. TOS was OK, "Spock's Brain" notwithstanding. Brooks was good as Cisco; too bad he didn't have better writers and a bigger budget. Supporting cast was at least decent for DS9. Voyager, I may have given a chance if they'd gone with the original plan and cast Lindsey Wagner (yes THAT bionic woman) as Janeway. But don't particularly care for the "Remo Williams Refugee" Kate Mulgrew. My own opinioin is she cannot act her way out of a paper bag, let alone a cardboard Starfleet Bridge set.
I liked Buck Rogers. Twiki (sp?) the robot was voiced by none other than Mel Blanc, the voice of most of your favorite Looney Tunes characters. The second Season of Buck was a little...dry, I guess would be good word. No more Dr. Hugher, Dr. Theopolis, Twiki or Princess Ardala. (Pamela Hemslee in those dresses...wow!) Plus the episode with Buster Crabb, the ORIGINAL Buck, was just GREAT! Some great guest stars, like Jack Palance, Sam Jaffee and Peter Graves helped, too. But again, they were all in the first season.
V was decent, I thought it definitely declined over time.
GalacticanCajun, thanks for bringing up the Flash. A very good series. Too bad it was cut down when it was. Seeing Mark Hammel pay the Trickster was just GREAT!
Farscape I liked, but I lost interest in it. One of my friends was big into it, and he thought the ending was just awful! Did the series no justice. He was also into Space: Above and Beyond. I just wasn't into it at the time.
I was, and remain, a big B5 fan. Strazynski's use of actors from Sci-Fi series of the past, his appreciation for both the Biblical and Science Fiction writing, his CONTINUITY of the series thanks in part to his "Continuity Nazi" Fiona Avery. (Think of the Soup Nazi from Sienfield, and apply that passion to the continuity of the series!) Plus, B5 made some good breakthroughs, especially in the CGI arena. But I think one of the less appreciated ones is that the "Stereotypical Alien" mold was broken. In Bergen/Branana Trek, all Ferengi are greedy, all Romulans are devious, all Klingons are warlike, etc., etc., In B5 we found that the aliens were not necessarily evil or driven by a single trait, but that they had personalities and were driven by their own motivations. Strazynski took two of the Alien ambassadors, started them out as adversaries, one a loose cannon no one wanted anything to do with, the other the happy-go-lucky guy everyone liked. Over the course of the series, these two were juxtaposed, and finally end up friends. A very good series, though I do think it kind of petered out at the end, but mostly because the didn't expect to get their 5th season, so they crammed everything they could into the 4th. And too bad the spin-off Crusade never got a chance to get going. Sci-Fi should have picked it up. TNT just wanted to much control, and their fingers CERTAINLY didn't belong in the soup after the success of B5. Strazynski even registered the psuedonym "Eiben Screwed" and used it in a writing credit on one of the Crusade episodes.
Regards,
Gunstar Aries
