View Full Version : Proposed names for "old school/new school"

I don't know, but I think "fans of TOS' and "fans of the mini" are a bit cumbersome to type.
So, due to lack of sleep, owing to a night shift, I came up with possibilities I think can be acceptable. Perhaps the names should be taken from the respective Adama actors:
Fans of TOS would then become "Greenes" and fans of the mini eould become "EJOs".
People like me, who are fans of both, would simply be called BSG fans.
Anyone else have any idea?

I think that is a funny post.
There is a sensitivity on labels.
I think people should be called by the label of thier preference whenever possible.

Neos weren't real. Lets just let people call themselves what they want to be called and leave it at that.

We're all bozos on this bus.
I did like slider's endearing term for us mini fans, but I'll leave that as an excerise.
When did the Neo/Retro appelations disappear from the vocabulary? Did everyone agree to quit using those terms?

When we found out the "Neos" were just a couple of assclowns out to cause mischief.
Whatever mini fans want to be called I'm cool with. I'd suggest posting a poll.

We already ready call the original series -- TOS. We can't call the mini based series the second series because we already have Battlestar 1980. So I suggest we call a Moore inspired series MBS for mini based series. Then you could be a TOS fan, a MBS fan and if you liked both simply a Battlestar Galactica fan. We can all pretend 1980 didn't exist (although I can think of three 1980 episodes I liked).

DO NOT ATTEMPT to apply labels to this fandom, not yet.
Wait until the dust settles, until there are official announcements whether the mini will either proceed or fade away, until the direction that TPTB intend to take is clear.
Until that time, we are all fans - of TOS, the mini, or some combination thereof.
Until then, I am a fan of BSG - the real BSG - and so is everybody else, even if we don't like the same exact things.

I like that thought Dawg. :D
I think it is important to avoid labels.
I use to refer to the older group as "Old Guards" and the new as "mini fans".
Though if you have to, BG78 and BG03 comes to mind.

"Labels, we don't need no stinkin' labels......"
Oh, dreadfully sorry, I'm told that I should have said "badges"? Methinks it's best that I just slink away now, hoping nobody noticed!

Actually... after thinking about it, I really think Dawg is right. There are different shows, there really aren't different "people." Fans are the same wether they like one show or the other. There are good guys and bad, but that has nothing to do with what they like. They would be assholes if they liked the same thing I liked or hated it.
So the shows are different, but people are just people. :)
hmmm... this reminds me of the "Trekker" vs "Trekkie" debates that went around the fandom a decade ago. :)

Hey, I respect everyone's opinion. In fact, I agree with you about the concept of labels. I bring it up for two reasons:
1. Labels are inevitable, regardless of how we feel about them. I simply thought that I would try to head off any potential future bad blood.
2. I'm an incredibly lazy typist and was looking for something easier than the "fans of" whatever.:D

Right now we already have the all encompassing Battlestar Galactica fan. The only need for "labels" comes from those that note they do not approve of some other incarnation than TOS. For that reason we have the term mini-fan to denote someone who likes the mini. Mini-fans consider themselves Battlestar Galactica fans although people who don't like the mini usually add that to be a Battlestar Galactica fan you must also like TOS. Fans of TOS or the mini however do not believe you need to be a BSG1980 fan to be a Battlestar Galactica fan. Time however will tell if a new "label" comes or supercedes the existing labels. If the mini based series is never produced or fails I believe we will see the BSG1980 effect. Battlestar Galactica fan will imply TOS. If the mini based series is a success numbers at the web sites over time will be mainly mini based series fans. As such Battlestar Galactica fans will be mini based series fans and TOS only fans will distinguish themselves from the larger population of overall fans. Star Trek fans distinguish themselves by the name of the show but we have no name difference. The fact that we have a TOS already implies to me that after a season or two it will probably become normal to refer to the MBS as "battlestar galactica" and the original series as TOS.
Time will tell however. MBS may just fade away. I bet today however we already have 90% of all post (positive or negative) related to the mini and about 50% of the people posting are mini-fans. If the series is greenlighted and is a success (a big if) these percentages will only grow. If MBS fades away the newer poster will disappear over time because they will have nothing to speculate about.
The original question that started this thread will answer itself over time or be irrelavent.
I am a Battlestar Galactica fan. I watched every TOS episode multiple times. I watched every Battlestar Galactica 1980 episode once. I watched the mini.
I do want to know (just kidding):
If I watched "Saga of A Star World", the ORIGINAL version where Baltar is KILLED by the cylons when are they going to make the continuation series based on the REAL Battlestar Galactica? Having Baltar alive changes everything. I don't know if I can believe half the TOS episodes could have really happened since Baltar was dead. I hate it when they tamper with the original to please an audience. ;)

He only died in the pre-series, theatrical release. When that did well and ABC ordered up the series (before it was broadcast on TV) they edited the pilot to give them a continuing villan.

If BSG2003 becomes a series, it is no longer just a mini, so anything with the term mini won't work. Even TOS is easy, but not precise enough, since it can apply to any series. You have to say BSGTOS and BSG2003. But that's clumsy. I like retro and neo, and then you could have arch-neos and paleo-retros, conservative neos and liberal retros, and all kinds of shades in between. (I'm a CN, by the way. Anybody want to fight about it??)
