View Full Version : So you support a continuation... what's the ideal?

By "continuation", I'm referring to a project set within the current BSG timeline, set in the future, featuring members of the original cast. When answering the question, think of Desanto/Singer or the Richard Hatch book as the primary reference.

Three years ago I would have said small-screen pilot followed by small-screen series.

I'm now casting my vote with "theatrical". It seems the best "fit" for those elements which RDM chose not to infuse into the new series. Maybe what we need to do is revision the "Star Wars for the Small Screen" - for the big screen.

larocque, I'm gonna have to go for 'Other.'

I'd like to see a series of two or three hour made-for-television movies. Theatrical stuff holds too much financial risk, and the given competition could skew the results, ie, the new BSG movie is released the same weekend as Jackson's version of the LOTR prequal, The Hobbit.

I have friend who is a reformed Trekkie, and he told me once that this was the format proposed for a group of stories revolving around Sulu and the Excelsior. (But, Sulu is a Roddenberry character, so Gene's estate would profit, not Berman and Branana, blah, blah) I think the format would have fit that concept well, and I think it would fit Battlestar well.

Shoot - never thought of that!

The closest one on my list is the TV movie "one -off". I'd be willing to modify that to mean "series of television movies", if just to get you to vote!

Interesting about Captain Sulu. They had several CD-audio adventures pumped out featuring (on audio) the adventures of the character. Takei provided the voice.

larocque,

 I voted for the "One Off", but meaning a series of TV movies as you said. B5 showed us what kind of effects we can expect from TV, so the quality of the effects shouldn't be an issue. But I DEMAND GOOD STORIES! No Spock's Brain episodes. Personally, I think Hatch's continuation novels would be a good start. At least a couple of scripts there..

I agree on Sulu and the Excelsior. Plus, I've always liked Takei. Smart, good actor with a good ability to laugh at himself. I'm not Trek fan, but I would have watched the Excelsior movies.

I would like another TV series that starts where TOS season 1 ended. Start with new actors playing the old roles. It's too late to bring back the original actors since some are dead and the rest have aged over 20 years. Keep the same names and mythos.

If not I would like to see a "Battlestar Pegasus" TV series that starts with the Pegasus the day after it's last mission with Galactica in TOS.

I voted for a series of movies, just becuase it seems like all of the comebacks from the '70's shows these days are done as films, not as the starting up of new series'. The Sci-Fi TV genre is kind of saturated now, with StarGAte, Babylon, and Enterprise. BG belongs on the big screen.

If not big-screen movies, I could see a series of TV movies like they did with the Perry Mason franchise or something like A&E does with the Horatio Hornblower thing.

But Richard, Dirk and as many as possible of the originals need to be involved in the storylines some way, even if they have concurring stories in two timelines like the final Star Trek:TNG episode or The Godfather Part 2.

This may be unpopular, but I'm in the minority camp that would like to see a prequel series of movies. Yes, that may mean new actors and characters, but at least you would see a few major victories by the Colonials and get to see more of life on the colonies. Time period doesn't matter to me, maybe a movie when they first encounter the Cylons or just before the Great Cylon War. Or maybe when the Colonials got involved to save their neighbors the Hasaris. The battles would be better since the warriors would pursue and destroy all opposition instead of breaking off an engagement when the Cylons decide to retreat and return to base. Also like to see the Colonials go on the offensive and have basestars under attack and on fire instead of just battlestars or a clash of fleets and capture/liberate a few planets.

One thing about doing a series of Made-for-TV movies is that a prequal movie or series could be done pretty easily. Or a Pegasus movie.

Maybe the first few of movies focus on Galactica, just to rejuvinate the fan base. The fifth or sixth focuses on the Pegasus. With plenty of fans watching and familiar or re-familiarized with the story, a prequal or two gets done.

Heck, you could even do a drama focusing on a family on board one of the ships of the fleet. (And if I were picking that ship, it'd be the Colonial Movers ship! "We Move Anywhere" even to legends!!)

To be honest, at this point as long as it adds to the Galactica franchise and not try to recreate it with very little to justify using the name Battlestar Galactica, I would be happy.

I would like a continuation 25 years where the last story left off. I personally think the argument about not doing a continuation because some of the main actors have died, doesn't hold water because most are asking for the story to continue Many years later and in life, people get old and die or some before there time.

So it's not that hard to believe that 25 years into the time line, some will no longer be with us. While others who were once young, are now in their mothers and fathers places as positions of authority. You would think that this would be expected to some degree with the younger characters becoming older but I could understand that argument if the fans were wanting a continuation right where the original left off.

The other argument is about not being able to update a continuation. Well we are not the same as we were 25 years ago. I think any race out in space would have changed to in 25 years.

I prefer a continuation with the older original cast in the older roles and new younger actors in the main roles. The exception being Noah Hathaway . It would be just too cool to see him playing a grown up Boxey.

I also wouldn't mind seeing a prequal with an all new cast.
To me, a younger cast playing younger versions of the original, seems a bit more easy to forgive .

I wouldn't mind something on the Pegasus either because the bottom line is, even though this show is 25 years old, it has a large fan base and the proof is in the petition at over 17500 and all the DVD sales, plus all the online boards and sites.

Common sense would dictate that the franchise should be added to. Not recreated and a sequel, prequal or even a side story would of added to the franchise. Just think how big the franchise would be if we had all 3.

It would be different if the fan base didn't exist but we do and we were the reason the Galactica name became feasible.
once again.

So I'm not too fussy. I just want it to stay in the same universe as the original for the most part.

I see your point OWD. ON the pegasus story line .......... I'd like
to see someone OTHER then don johnson who Moore thinks should
play the role. He's a good actor but not strong enough for the
role.

Ya I stopped listening to what Moore had to say, a long time ago.
He seems like a nice guy but he dumps on the original to much to justify the mini.

Don Johnson as cain? Glen Larson didn't want him so now Moore does? lol

Well I wish them the best if it goes to a series. It may not be my Battlestar Galactica but it is to some others. I will never see it so it makes no difference to me. :)

I can see it now, EJO as Adama, Don Johnson as Cain and Philip MIchael
Thomas as Tolen. Adama would outank them as in TOS and would be able to tell them what to do.
Jan Hammer would supply the music. Michael Talbot would be chief Zweiteck of the Pegasus
