A question for those of you who have read the Richard Hatch BS novels...
How are they...storywise, that is?
I've read reviews that indicate that the editing is poor, but how is the writing and the story? I'm a big fan of the OTS and am interested in Richard Hatch's vision for taking that original storyline forward, but the books are somewhat pricey for my budget at the moment. I suppose they're more expensive because they've not received a very wide distribution, which is unfortunate. I've looked for them in bookstores over the years, but to date I've never seen them on the shelves.
Are they worth the investment?
I'm currently setting aside funds for purchasing the DVD set, but I'd like to get the books too eventually.

Hi CmdrCain :).
There actually seem to be two different responses to his books. On one hand, many people truly love them and consider them the closest thing to a true continuation. And then there are some who do not like them and mainly point out passages where they diverge from TOS. It would be hard for me to say how you might respond, but I can tell you how I feel about them. I really like the books a lot; especially in Armageddon, Richard has captured the essence of each character very well, and this first book is extremely exciting. It reads more like you are watching a new episode than a narrative. The succeeding books are good too, although you can tell they have different co-authors.
He introduces some neat new stuff like the Duet, Chitain and the Skye, and explores new territory with some of the children born in space.
If you could, try and at least get Armageddon to see what you're missing. If you like it, you'll most likely want to read the rest. Hope this helps. :)

Sure does, thanks! I'll try and get hold of Armageddon soon and check it out. I was just curious for an opinion from those already initiated in the series.
Thanks again! I'm glad that Richard Hatch has undertaken this project.

I think that there might just be one other category in approaching Richard's books. I really like them and do consider them the best thing in the continuation storyline, but I also think that they could have been better. I don't like some things about the stories (the ESP stuff), but I can live with it and I don't think it really makes a difference in my overall opinion of them.
I say, if you are a BSG fan, get them and read them all!!!! By the way, local bookstores have them too. I have seen them on the shelves of Barnes & Noble, etc....

My opinion on the books is that they are a good way to get a BSG fix. They are a fun easy read, aside from the typos and bad editing. Most of them have been reprinted in paperback but I noticed Amazon only has the hardbacks right now. I have seen them in book stores but they are usually under series, not Hatch. They should be hiding next to Babylon 5 and Battletech. An online option is http://www3.addall.com/ they will search ~30 stores for you and sort them by price.
good luck :)
