In my quest to achieve a total post count that will enable me to have an avatar, I thought I'd put together a small set of posts that list some of the Mormon influences that I've noticed in Larson's Battlestar Galactica.

I assume that there are already entire web pages devoted to this sort of thing - I don't know. But I like to ramble...
:)

So here's the first one. The thirteen tribes. It seems to me that the entire 13 tribes back-story is based on the Book of Mormon. Here's how:

The first five books of the Old Testament of the traditional and pretty well known Christian bible (also called the Books of Moses and/or the Jewish Torah) tell the story of the founding of Jerusalem and the 12 tribes of Israel, all descended from Abraham. These correspond to the twelve tribes and colonies of the Battlestar Galactica universe.

The Book of Mormon is an additional book that Mormons consider to be canonical. They believe it to be an additional revelation. (As a disclaimer and for the record, I must point out that many branches of Chrisianity teach that there can be no further revelation past the New Testament and do not consider the Book of Mormon to be canonical) This book postulates that there was another tribe - a 13th tribe. It tells that during the time of the old testament (9,000 years ago?), God appeared to a single man and told him that in order to escape the impending destruction of Jerusalem, he should take his family and sail over the ocean to a new promised land. So he took his family and voyaged to a distant unknown land. The trip was long and arduous, and it was only his faith in God that kept them all alive and inspired them to see the voyage through. He and his descendants are basically the "13th tribe" of Israel. That unpopulated land that they settled and populated would later be called "America" and his descendents would later be called the "Native Americans." This promised land corresponds to Earth in the Galactica Universe.

That's part of the back-story. There's still more to come...
