What Was Good?

What was good about this mini? NOTHING AT ALL. I channel surfed the first night and saw parts of it. Number Six and Geius Baltar going at it. "Geius I am so hot." I thought I had the Playboy channel on for a moment. :D Sackhoff couldn't act if her life depended upon it. She had the perfect opportunity to research the role when she had coffee with Dirk but I guess they talked about the length of her hair as compared to Dirk's Starbuck. The second night I really hurt myself by watching this trash that they tried to pass off as Galactica. It kept getting worse and worse until it finally improved when the end credits were shown.

It was bad. They could have gotten rid of #6 altogether, it was slower than the speed of paper when she was on. Did you like the guy in the necktie?

Like the late Freddie Blassie(WWE Wrestling) would say, the guy looked like " A pencil necked geek." :D On a serious note the costumes weren't inspiring but boring like the rest of the show. TOS costuming was colorful and elegant. G 2003 had the feel of a doctor's office, sterile.

Well, the way I look at it... A series with only 50% of the fans supporting it will not stand the test of time. And I'm being generous saying 50% of the people like the new BSG.

I've often wondered what would have happened if the Internet had been in full-swing when "Star Trek:Voyager" first came out. The true Trek fans would have probably ripped it apart...deservingly.

Anyway, back to the topic... I absolutely hated the fact that they told us what was happening vs. showing us. We hear all of this backstory about Zack and they never showed us a flashback or anything. Zack should have been in the Viper squadron that got wiped out (the one Boomer was in). Let's say that he took Starbucks place (because she was in the brig) and that could have led to some more anger between Apollo and Starbuck. So many missed opportunites...

I wanted to see the fleet getting wasted by the Cylons. We kept hearing the reports, like when the Atlantia was destroyed. A friend of mine said that this "added to the tension on the Galactica, because they were just getting fragmented reports of the devastation." I say frag that idea. We are a savvy bunch of sci-fi fans and dang it, we want to see it all. Don't show me mushroom clouds hitting a cornfield...show me a city getting nuked by a 50 megaton airburst.

I think people that say they could not find ONE good thing in the mini are being disengenuous. That's just my opinion.

For a lot of folks, just the fact of the mini being written was NOT a good thing. It violated, for many, a lot of feelings (not just characters) that have been held dear for these last 25 years. Airing it just twisted the blade, for some.

If I allow myself to watch it, at some point when it doesn't matter to anyone connected to the show, I'll look for the good things. One of those will be Don's work on the shuttle!

That was because Titon did them. I could recognize his Viper launch blindfolded. One of the worst ideas was not showing more Viper launches when the Galactica engaged the two Basestars at Rangor.

I must start out by saying that I was prepared not to like one iota of the miniseries and while it didn't completely win me over, there were some good things done with it. There were some interesting characters, but most of the ones I liked were secondary characters. I liked Lt. Helo - even though he got left behind. I liked his courageous nature and sense of who was worth protecting. I liked Chief Tyrol - he was a direct and forthright man that also had a sense of depth to him - lots of screen time for him and he made use of it! I would say that I liked Lt. Valerii ( I do and not just because she's a looker...), but I think that the "Sleeper Cylon" stuff is pure felgercarb and screws up a perfectly good character. I was warming up to Lee "Apollo" Adama by the end of the mini - although he could never really be the real Apollo - I am a big fan of Richard's work in BSG.

The rest of what I liked was on a purely visual basis and it was all SFX stuff. I loved the shuttle that Don did and I liked the shots of the fleet as it was gathering. That new version of the Agro Ship was really nice - too bad it got left behind. It was cool seeing the Celestra, Mineral Ship, Prison Barge and the Gemini Freighter - there may have been more, but it was hard to see them.

I didn't like the Mark VII Vipers at all - way to far removed from an already wonderful design. I did warm up to the Mark II Vipers after seeing them in action in the second half of the mini.

I did not like any of the Cylon designs at all - I hated the Raiders - they reminded me of a cross between the Trade Federation droid fighters and the Andromeda. The Cylon Basestars made me want to find a big rubber ball and play jacks with them. The "robotic" Cylons that were shown in the first scene could have been interesting, but what is the point of having them when the Raiders don't even need pilots and one or two of them can disable a whole squadrom of Vipers?

The set designs for the Galactica were complete trash to my eye - the most offensive to me were the bridge set and the corridors. The Galactica herself looked like a garbarge scow to me.

Did I get everything? I tried to stick to the things I liked, but managed to throw in a few I didn't - sorry!

She was *awful*. Again, I have to specify that I'm *not* accusing Katee Sackhoff of being a drug addict- I don't know the woman and I certainly wouldn't blithely make that charge- but the Kara Thrace character seemed stoned. And lines that, I suppose, were supposed to be roguish and charming came off as smug and self-indulgent (O, Dirk, Where Art Thou?). And the guy playing "Tigh"? Harvey Korman. I swear to god, he was Harvey Korman.

Everyone else I thought gave performances that ranged from decent to very good. Gaius was a little erratic, but that's more to do with the inconsistant scripting than the actor.

Despite the fact that he was caucasian, he reminded me more of the real Boomer than Valerii did (I should add though, Grace Park was charming and I like the Valerii character...it's the calling her "Boomer" part I'm not thrilled about...I also think the sleeper Cylon plot is pretty lame, although everyone seems to be treating it as a "Rosebud was the sled!" or "Luke, I am your father"-level shocker).

After sigining all of the petitions and agreeing that the direction the Moore was taking with the mini was all wrong, I was prepared to not watch the mini when it aired. But curiousity got the best of me and I ended up watching anyways.

As many have commented, compared to TOS, IT DOESN'T. But, if I forget that this is a BSG rip-off and just evaluate it as any other sci-fi movie, I thought it was decent. Not great, but decent.

Following is what I thought was decent or good.

Actors/Actresses

I think Ed Olmos was very good as Adama. Of course no one can ever replace the legendary Lorne Greene, but I thought that Olmos interpretation of a military commander was pretty good. Lorne Greene's Adama was a politician, commander and a father figure -- a character one would hold in awe. Olmos' Adama was more military. Obviously a very respected commander, but not one who awes. I kind of think of Greene's Adama like General Bradley and Olmos' as General Patton.

Mary McDonnell was decent as President Laura Roslin. Since this is a "new" character to BSG, there's obviously no comparison to the original. Given that, I thought she did decent as an ill politician who has to fight through not only ber own personal health problems, but keep it together in order to bring some order to a very chaotic situation. She wasn't a perfect president, as she's learning on the job, and I thought that was realistic. However, if the mini is ever made into a series, her character is obviously doomed, due to her cancer. So a decent character will be wasted.

James Callis' as Gaius Baltar was actually pretty good. I have to admit that if there was one thing I didn't like about the original BSG, it was Baltar. I just can't conceive of anyone who would betray their own species to be with a bunch of robots. So Callis' portrayal of a Baltar as an unwitting betrayer is more believeable/plausible to me.

Aaron Douglas as Chief Tyrol was excellent. Like McDonnell, there was no comparison to the original, but I really liked see the perspective of the "grunts" down on the flight deck. He was very believeable, especially when he was pleading with Tigh for more time for his people and when he expressed his outrage to Adama.

Grace Park as Boomer. While I didn't warm to the idea of Boomer being sex-changed into a female, Grace Park was excellent. Heck, she made her character warm, vulnerable, and likeable. The only bad thing, (not her acting) is to find out she's a sleeper Cylon agent. That's just bunk. Heck, Park's Boomer was one of the most human characters in BSG and we find out she's a Cylon? But Grace herself get's high marks.

Considering that the Cylons are robots, I thought it was a good "twist" to find out that the humans had created the Cylons.

At first, I didn't like the new Galactica, but by the end, I thought it was decent. It doesn't look as good as the original, but it looked more like a warship.

I liked how they launched and recovered the Vipers. Abit more realistic than what we saw in the original and I liked seeing the Viper crews working on the flight/hanger decks.

And that's about all I liked.

No kidding! The one character I liked on the whole show, the only human I actually cared about, and now she is a sleeper agent? Why should I watch a possible series, when the only "human" character in my mind is the enemy out to destroy humanity! What horrible writing, but I do hope to see Grace Park elsewhere, as I thought she was wonderful!
