View Full Version : coexistence

I am afraid that there cannot be peaceful coexistence between the fans of NBG (new battlestar galactica) and TOS (the original series). There are too many people on both sides that are bullheaded. The fans of TOS see the remake as an insult and trash, while some fans of the NBG are too young to remember TOS, and look at it now and make fun of it. To use a fitting analogy, fans of the NGB are the colonials, running away and defending themselves from the overwhelming and ruthless fans of the TOS. I am bipolar myself. I enjoy TOS as it stands, and I also enjoy NBG as an alternate universe. NBG is not a sequel, prequel, or continuation of TOS. It is a whole new alternate universe. I hope that they pick up the series and run with it, because it can explore issues and plots that TOS did not cover. We would all like to see TOS be renewed and continued, but that will NEVER happen. We have to face the cold truth that the TOS will never be seen from again. Buy the DVD set, try to forget the horrible galactica 1980, and remember it fondly. Holding out hope that the TOS will be renewed is like hoping that episode III of star wars won't sux like the last two films. The only hope we have of anything battlestar is for NBG to be picked up as a series.

Yes. And the sad thing about it is it all could've been avoided.

From the tone this should probably be moved into the bad & Ugly forum.
Oh, and I liked Galactica 1980. I was 12 at the time.
That little fact probably doesn't help me much. LOL

On these boards there will be. The owner and admin are determined that these boards are for all BSG fans, not just for the Old Show only fans. Hence the reason why the pro mini and anti mini sections were set up by Conundrum.

I disagree with both of you.
And lordpenguin, it is posts like yours that drive that division deeper. If as you say, you appreciate both: then appreciate both here. If someone is too hardcore TOS for you, edit your profile and use the quite handy "ignore" function for those posters. Enjoy your mini, enjoy our TOS. Don't flame another for not loving both (and let the mods know if someone flames you.)
If you still are uncomfortable here, I have a suggestion: http://subspacebbs.com Dennis is our friend and runs a top notch board. He has historically been pro-mini.
The point is go where you can have fun.

Sorry Dean, you get to keep the negative but pro-mini posts here. He Likes the mini. He's just needing to find a new forum home possibly.
Unless we decide this guy is just a troll, here to cause trouble (PM me, Hito, BST or JJ with your input on that.) We have a file 13 spot for those. ;)

To use a fitting analogy, fans of the NGB are the colonials, running away and defending themselves from the overwhelming and ruthless fans of the TOS.
This is about as fitting an analogy (to use another example) comparing TOS fans to Saddam Hussein's Iraqis.
I'm getting tired of reading this. This conflict you describe is largely fiction, and I don't think it would hold much water no matter where you too took it.
Can we get on to dicsussing the merits of the miniseries? I thought that was what this place was for.

Dean: our G80 fans are SteveW and PeterNoble: both great guys. They keep us a little in line about it. I liked the premise, hated the execution and terribly missed Apollo and Starbuck.

First off, I am NOT a Troll. I despise trolls, and people that feed them. I was merely noting my experience with message boards in general concerning battlestar. I have been to several, and there are flame wars all over on both sides. I am actually happy to find a message board with people that care enough to separate the two camps to tone down the fighting. I was not trying to be mean spirited. I was just surprised about the fanatical hatred out there. Perhaps in here it will be a little calmer.
I found this a little interesting though:
"(And lordpenguin, it is posts like yours that drive that division deeper.)" . "(Enjoy YOUR mini, enjoy OUR TOS. Don't flame another for not loving both")
I don't know if you it was your intention, but telling me to enjoy MY mini, and YOUR TOS sounds very devisive to me. Do you mean to imply that since I am a fan of the mini, I cannot possibly be a true fan of TOS?
I am a huge fan of TOS, have the series on DVD, and before that watched any repeats anywhere they appeared. Even though I did not like G 80, I still watched it, kinda like I watched the dukes of hazzard when they got rid of luke and duke. It still had the general lee in it, but it just wasn't the same...

Good point. I have noticed that once you admit to liking the mini you are automatically in that camp as far as some are concerned.
I love the original. I was entertained by the mini. There's a difference. I would not fight for the mini nor would I go as far as to say it was great. I enjoyed it.
But some fans will feel that if you truly loved TOS you CAN'T support, like, watch, or say anything positive about the mini or you will be a marked man/woman.

Everyone enjoy the mini. Enjoy the TOS. Enjoy the Desanto effort, the Hatch story, Larson's stuff, the Helios RPG stories, the fanfic.... leave each other out of it.
Lordpenguin- it may help in the future to remember that if you come onto a board and render a summary judgement in your first 5 posts, you will likely not get a favorable reaction. You may want to rethink that one. ;)

I did make two summary judgements. One was that old and new could not exist peacefully. In my opinion (just an opinion, not a fact) after seeing all the flame wars and hatred spread on both sides, I don't see peace in our future. We should not create a civil war between us, but unite together.
As to the never seeing a revival of TOS, I am being a realist. I would LOVE to see a new BG series based off of TOS, or a feature film.
Look a V for Kobol's sake. NBC is currently working on a new V mini-series, bringing back most of the original cast just because the DVD sales of the old miniseries went through the roof.
If we can buy enough of the DVD sets of TOS to show someone there is a market for it, then perhaps. But now because of the new battlestar, the money will probably be funneled into that instead of TOS.

Although the sad truth is, your probably right about the future of BSG, but stranger things have happened. I think I could handle seeing anything produced based on the original, and love it, while still keeping an insanely positive outlook for the new BSG.
Where i have to argue though is ... LMAO ... The last 2 ... and I'm sure the next Star Wars ... are GREAT! When it's all said and done, I hope Lucas will get really brave and go for 7, 8 & 9 ... with some computer hepl to give original faces to key characters!!! lol

You've decided the fandom can't get along, so let's get along?

I'm saying we probably can't get along, but we should learn to live together. Look at the Federation and the Romulans. They are enemies, but they striked a bargan, and now tolerate each other without killing eachother on a daily business. Kind of like the cylons disappearing for 40 years...

penguin, i haven't read this all. But from your first post you contradicted yourself. You say that the two are hopelessly different camps, but then you say you love BOTH. So you are PROOF that the two can become one!
And in an odd way you have become the ideal. :D
LOL.
really we can all just enjoy the shows.
And John larocque, I think the reference was not regarding the Iraqi army but rather the basic theme of glactica: A small group running from the vastly bigger cylon force.
:)
As for everyone, if you don't like the forums, there ain't too much I can do. But I will say the goal here is to just for everyone to kick back and relax. this isn't the Halls of congress. We don't decide the future of the world. We just enjoy tv shows here. And we try to encourage fans to help and show their best halves. Be friendly. have fun.

let me contradict myself again. Some people actualy think and compose their posts, but mine are more random thoughts that will be adjusted at a later date. I think that once the dust settles, there will 3 different "camps".
Camp 1 is the TOS hardcore fans, that will will not rest until the mighty battlestar is renewed with most of the original cast and the original cylons. They HATE the mini, and all those that say anything positive about it.
Camp 2 is the mini fans that either didn't like the original series for some reason, or aren't old enough to remember the first run episodes. These young whelps have no respect for battlestar canon, the imperial cylons, or TOS. They HATE TOS and all those that say anything positive about it.
Camp 3 are the fans that love TOS and like the mini. I don't think that there is anyone that absolutely loves the mini, but there might be. These fans see the mini as a "revision" or "alternate universe" while still liking and supporting TOS.
Myself, I'm in Camp 3. I liked the mini, but it had many flaws and the pacing was sloooooow. Overall, it was a good effort to retell the original pilot in a new manner. If it gets picked up for a series, it has merit. Provided the writing is good, the plots are valid, it will be fun to watch. It won't be as good as a continuation of TOS, but I'm not going to wait another 20+ years before I give a new version my attention. I will take what is given to me, and be thankful there is something other than void. I may not like the taste of it yet, but I won't starve either.

They HATE the mini, and all those that say anything positive about it.
So there ARE those that hate me, as I suspected.

I don't think anyone hates you. Idiot. :D (that's a friendly joke btw)
Just some people who disagree vocally. But really. Just laugh at their jokes and share some ambrosia.
penguin, I think you are missing the X-factor in all this. Colonial Fleets herself. We aren't the place to decide which is better. We do lean toward liking the old show and want to see it come back, but we aren't the marchers or the agenda-fighters.
Me and Don have this little tropical island called Colonial Fleets. Its here as a vacation getaway. To enjoy yourself. we don't want to hear fiery debates no more. We are all retired from that fight.
We just set up a nice little getaway, and we came here to relax and have fun. Not win no arguements. :)

As some people know, I spent a bit of time on EZBoard. This is almost word for word from an old SciFiman76 post!
My response over there was the same as now. I don't believe in "camps". I don't believe in compartmentalizing fandom (which is what your posts are doing).
As for the "Hardcore fans" that hate mini supporters. Well, I've been a "give a chancer" for six months now, and I haven't met one of them. They hate the mini, for sure, but that doesn't extent personally to supporters.
Please don't bring up this charge again.

I'm a bigger fan of TOS for the record. I played the DVD yesterday and when the music came on and the title flew at me on my 100 inch screen I was like, 'Ahhh, this is the real deal.'

Well obviously that didn't read right!
Your mini as in you are a fan of it, you like it. (I think once a show hits the airwaves and finds fans, it belongs to them, as much as to the shows' creators)
"Our" TOS as in we are both fans of it, we both like it so it is collectively "ours". I want you to have fun (makes it more fun for me too). Sorry that came off wrong. I was having a little bit of a tense day....

I am sorry if I offended anyone. I started out voicing my distate at flame wars going on, and started my own here by mistake. I apologize. I came here to seek shelter from the storm. I have been to may BBs, and this one seems the most "balanced". Others are too far one way or the other. This is more a a neutral zone. This site is great because I can discuss topics on both battlestars, although since the mini is only a mini for now, I'll be more inclined to hang out with the old crew since there is so much more to discuss.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone about my views on the resurrection, but those are my personal beliefs on the topic. I want the old girl to fly again, but after 20+ years, I have lost faith in ever seeing her again.
I hereby ask for a truce in the unintentional war I started.
I bid you all well, and hope to see you around.
