A question for the mini fans

Sure, I would give it a chance.

I would periodically give Star Trek: Voyager a chance; never did like it but I would tune in once in a while to see it had improved. It never did at least not in my opinion.

I have been a purist for the old show and always will be. I wanted the continuation, not this damned remake. For the last year I have been telling fans to avoid the remake, to not even watch it with the expectation that they might find something they enjoyed and give it a chance, because then Moore and Hammer will have won. But damn the curiosity that always kills the cat, for out of curiousity to see for myself how lousy it was, I went and watched it both nights. I feel like such a traitor, and a hypocrite to boot.:(

I don't know if I would watch the actual series. I feel like crap already that I *sob* liked some of the mini. and I don't want to feel worse about betraying the original and my dreams for a proper continuation.

I mean seriously, if the mini had some good qualities that you liked then great! Don't let some "hatred" of the people who made it get in the way. These people are out to make a good show, regardless of what the hardcore fanboys do or say. I'm sorry, but the overwhelming majority of the public LIKES this new show ALOT...I mean C'mon...the ratings were through the roof. You talk like people are praying that this show fails. This only serves to make the Galactica fanboys REALLY look like they've lost touch with reality.

I don't know much about the Neilsen's, but I get the idea that Sciffy is happy with the numbers, if it really got 3.8 (?) on night #1. We'll know more in the coming days. There's a December 31 deadline according to Jamie Bamber.

I think it was said a while back that the presence of an RDM Galactica series won't hurt Larson's attempts at a theatrical movie, and may actually help. I've for a while been of the opinion that both Galactica's can co-exist.

In any case, the minseries (and potential series) deserves to be judged on its own merits, and this forum (like Subspace) is meant to be a friendly place to discuss it.

I don't believe for a minute that they sit down and write the show with the goal of pissing off fans of the original. What would be the point in that? Why on earth would a network spend all of that money and effort to do such a thing? Networks make shows to get ratings and thus advertising dollars or subscribers (HBO). Writers write, painters paint etc. There are a few artists whose motivation is to piss people off and send them away from spending their dollars on the artists work, but they're not usually very succesful.

Sciffy ignored original series fans (who wnated continuation) when they put this production together. They had a clear direction that they wanted to take and both Eick and Moore made themselves available to fans to interact with these fans. I actually agree with some of Moore's reasoning for remake even though I may not agree with the execution. (I haven't watched it yet.... being North of the Border)

I'm personally hoping - if this does come to series - that this entire debate will resolve itself along the lines of the TOS versus TNG debate 15 years ago. TNG - in my opinion - was Roddenberry's "reimagining" of TOS with a different take on the same property. I think this version of Galactica deviated more greatly from the original but that's another isue. Enjoy the show on its own merits - if it's good it will find its own audience (which it appears to have done).

And if it doesn't come to series? Well, in either case, I still want Dirk Benedict back in his Viper.

Final thought: the conspiracy stuff holds little water with me as well.

Thank you oldwardaggit for bringing some sense into this forum.

But the debate about the re-imaging of BSG is not just about BSG. It's about Hollywood's disregard for the iconic treasures of our youth.

For those of us who are adults and were raised on BSG, we looked up to those men and women. Who better to learn the meaning of true friendship than from Starbuck and Apollo? Or how about understanding between parents and their children (Apollo and Adama)?

Yes, it is just a TV series. But in our culture today, you are a liar if you say that the characters in shows you watch have not become part of your family.

Hollywood decides they are going to go into our past and rape the characters we looked up to as children all for the sake of profit. It's wrong. And of all the shows they decided to rape, the most polite, least offensive of the group was Battlestar Galactica.

What they have done is wrong. And all of you who support the mini, you wait until they do it to your characters too...only then will you understand.

But I don't believe that there has been a rape. The studio is a business. They owned a property, they did what they wanted to do with it in a way that they thought they could see the most profit. They hred the players that they thought could best realize that goal and it appears they were right. I don't believe they set out to trample on fans of TOS or ruin their plans , or smash their dreams I doubt they gave it that much consideration. Which probably hurts like hell to be dismissed, understandable.

malachi42, this was done by a niche channel owned by Universal "to maintain the franchise" Only a fool on that cast was planning to work on a series. What was said in public or on a Scifi Chat was for ratings

I'm already together. My arm was slightly loose and my leg screws were coming out a bit, but it didn't take much pulling to get myself together.

As far as hatred clouding my judgement, there isn't any hatred, just serious dissapointment that the original wasn't revived as it was going to be. So for a long time I had an aversion to the new BSG which took the place of the classic BSG that was meant to be, and refused to accept it as any kind of replacement for the story/characters/concepts/actors I loved. So yes, sorry to say (nevermind, I'm not sorry), I was hoping that this show would fail so the way would be open for the old BSG revival to continue. I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy. I am a big fan, I loved the old series, have wished for years that there would be a revival, but I am not rabid for the old show. Ya know, I once had an adorable pocket poodle named Peanut. I had her since she was 5 weeks old and small enough to fit in my shoe. Had her for 12 years and loved her to death. But she got old, sick, and suffered, and had to be...mercified. She was like my baby, and I've wanted to get a new dog for years. I loved the name I gave her, Peanut, but I could never name another dog Peanut, nor could I ever get a pocket poodle again. I simply don't want new experiences with a dog of the same type and appearance to cloud my memories of my Peanut, ya know what I mean? And its same with my childhood memories of BSG. I don't want a new show to replace the old, and put new images and concepts into the minds of viewers and myself, to cloud and erase the legacy of the old show. Because then the old show would be dead, replaced by a distorted version of the original saga.

I spoke to both of the actors you refer to Dvo, at the premiere, and both were very hopeful about continuing on a series. I know Mary having worked with her a c year ago, and she was wild about the project. Said that she was thrilled with the project and was planning to continue with it.

I'm a costume designer, but not on BG. I went to the premiere with a friend who worked on it. I spoke to both Edward James Olmos and Mary McD who I know fairly well, and they were both very excited and commited to a series should it happen.

I tend to give almost anything a chance (i tend to shy away from reality TV... i watched the first survivor and that was all) so yah, i probably would watch as least half a season!

I would give it a chance, but mostly because I would give any sci-fi show a chance. Though that does remind me of the A-Team. It took me a long time to get to like Dirk's character Face because the pilot had a different actor play that part. For most of the first season I could not get past Starbuck (as I thought of him for that time) playing someone elses part (an actor who I have no idea who he is). But Face grew on me, and I would hope that in a BSG with different actors they would also grow on me.

I'd watch it. In fact, I'd be excited to see what changes they make, if any. Hopefully they'll get new music at the least. I hope they get someone to add some heart to a series, there's some in the mini, but not enough. It would also help if they could have actual mecha-Cylons for more than 20 seconds. What else do I want changed?? Hmm...how about an Apollo without a stick up his...er...backbone? A few new (old) characters would be good too...Athena at the least. How's this for realism? Have her come in the series as Adama's illegitimate daughter or something. Hopefully Baltar is insane (like in TOS) and doesn't have a stupid chip in his head. And they really gotta have an Imperious Leader...definately that.

One that they can't bring to the series is Jolly (I know, big loss) since he was apparently killed in the initial viper attack. We never see him but the CAG orders him to take over, but of course his communications are dead.

So I guess there won't be any big Tony Swartz reunion show...;)

Alas, The Scifi Channel has it's '04 schedule DONE.

So, EJO & Mary McD will not know till mid '04 if The Scifi Channel will do Battlestar lite in ’05. Hell The Scifi Channel does not know either, the DVD artwork has been done, it’s @ amazon but listed as not available, DVD sales could make or break a series. Ergo, I shall not buy one.

Bonnie is looking to do another one of Steven Spielberg’s favorite themes ‘aliens in our midst’.

He not only Directed Close Encounters of the Third Kind, he wrote it. Taken was very expensive for The Scifi Channel say around $40 million for ten episodes or $4 million per 44 minutes.

Spielberg was taken by The Scifi Channel’s two-week ‘Taken’ format, his critically acclaimed & award winning ‘Band of Brothers’ lost audience ratings and interest during HBO’s one episode pre-week presentation format.

Many Farscape fans think this is why Farscape was moved to a lesser timeslot in order to bring about lower rating allowing The Scifi Channel to use the low ratings to kill Farscape to allow Bonnie to be taken by ‘Taken’.

If Ronald D. Moore is to believed, a real great big IF. Battlestar lite cost $14 million bucks.

So a Battlestar lite would cost about $ 3.5, but Scifi saves a half a million in sets, another half a million in series CG and half a million in not from scratch start up cost that’s still $2 million per 44 minute episode. So you Battlestar lite fans better save those VHS tapes till amazon hits you for $24.95 for the mini on DVD.

Well I guess everyone will know by Decmber 31st, when the options on the actors run out. There are no doubt a lot of meetings about it this week.
If they get the green light they'd probably start shooting in early spring which would probably allow it to air in the fall of 04. While the mini costs 14 million the per episode costs would probably be closer to 2 million, Carnivale costs 3.5 milion, Star Trek is somewhere around that amount, so it is not unheard of, and Universal has plenty of cash. If they pick it up for 9 episodes, a series would cost considerable less that the pilot.
You may very wll be right. they may pass on it. They may not. I just wouldn't make too many unequivocal staments, because ya can never predict Hollywood and how decisions get made.

I'd watch it! It's nice to see things updated how others would view and do certain things. Even if you don't like everything that is there there's always something that you can pick out that you like and sometimes that's worth watching for and sometimes not. I like Battlestar so much that I'd give any variation of it a try, not saying I'd stay with any variation, but give it a try, nothing's gonna hurt there.

Yeah, I'd give it a chance. I gave this one a chance, after all, and I gave all the incarnations of Star Trek after TOS a chance. Oh, and I have Stargate SG1 a chance after the movie.

The basic premise of Battlestar Galactica (which is the same in both miniseries and TOS pilot) is what always appealed to me. The various details, frequently, I can take or leave, and some of them (the non-Earth origins for humanity) I actively disliked. At least in the miniseries, they've given themselves an option in how they set things up that they can have the surprise revelation that humanity is actually from Earth, should they choose to go that route.

So, yeah, even if they lost the "big name" talent, for example, I'd still tune in to check it out.

The fall sounds logical, especially if the newest addition (coming in Jan to sci-fi... i have no idea of the name) doesn't work out... BSg would then take SG1 or SGA's spot once their summer run is done... also if they film it around the same schedule(not nessicarily the same months) SG1 and SGA do/will for each new season then its not unlogical for it to film at least half a season before airing begins. (SG1 has already completed all the filming for S7 I believe.... spoilers can be found in numerous places for the finale)

Absolutely! I enjoyed the mini but the continuity of the old series appeals to me, also. TOS should be updated however to show 25 years of change.
