Ok... I'm calm. Breathe in, breathe out... easy does it...

Yes, just finished watching "the letdown"

I seem to have landed in the right place. Long story short, I just found this site last night, and have been going through the threads on here and on some of the other affiliated message boards you all have.

I must say, wow. A nicer conglomeration of true BSG, Bab 5, and all around Sci Fi fans I have not seen in a long while.

I'm 26, and was a rabid fan of BG during my childhood. It and Star Wars of course, where my two main obsessions during my growing years. Star Wars was the biggie for me, but I never found myself thinking of BG as a rip off of SW back then either. To me it had it's own heart and it's own unique feeling of watching an epic story unfold. It was the Babylon 5 of my Pre-teen years.

And for a time, BG kinda slipped to the back of my mind as the years went by. Catching it from time to time on TV, and remembering fond memories of my yesteryears. Remembering how much I really loved those old characters, and the actors who played them. Those actors gave life to the characters, from the honorable crew of the Battlestar, to the evil portrayal of Baltar (thks for the heads up there Jewels!) and the robotic Cylons.

Then I hear about Sci Fi's revival. And in the past I had heard rumors that Hatch was trying to bring the series back, and my heart soared!! I thought that's what this thing was. I thought it was this project! As you can tell I have been out of the loop all these years, and just now getting my facts straight. Thanks to "the letdown"

Could they have destroyed my childhood memories of this grand old series any further? I mean, it's as if the creators made a list of the 10 biggest things that would piss the original series fans off, and then went with them with this show! Lets totally reverse genders on half the cast!! Lets make this Sex In the BATTLE STAR (frankly, if I want to watch so much sexual release in a show, I will fire up some porn tape, don't want to see it in a frickin Battlestar for crying out loud). Oh and I love this one.. lets make one of the more lovable characters in the show (Apollo) have a major chip on his shoulder, and come off as a total deuche bag! THEY TURNED BALTAR INTO A PIMP!! They have the guy running around in a cheap suit and tie getting interviewed on Oprah or something! And don't get me started on miss "Deal with it"

But you know what? If the series had been good enough, I would have probably been able to look past all this. Would take some major getting used to, but I could "deal with it" I'm sure.

But the utter blasphemy.. CYLONS ARE NOW HUMAN!! WOOHOOO!! Oh my oh my!!! And not only that! WE BUILT THE DAMN THINGS!!! How ironic!! what a cruel twist of fate!!!..... forgive me while I hurl.

This is the ONE thing I cherished as a kid!! Who can forget the cylons, their voices, yes even thier stiff walk across the screen! Fine! update their look a bit, make them CG robots that can truly cause fear in the viewer. But no!! Cylons have turned into FEMBOTS! Fembots that are sent to... RAPE HUMANITY! For crying out loud. And the few shots of the Robotic versions of cylons looked terrible! The CG walk animation was the worst I've seen. Babylon 5 was doing better CG during their first season run! And that's when they had no budget!

They mentioned how the original never truly explained much about the Cylon backstory. That the audience never really found out if they were robots, or aliens inside battle armor, or part robot part alien things. And that they, in their allknowing wisdom gave them a "Better" backstory. Well correct me if I'm wrong, and I haven't seen the original show in years, but didn't they make it quite clear that the cylons were built by an actual race (reptillian in nature I believe) that died off long ago. And their robot armies are all that remained, carrying out their last directive (to destroy humanity). Not only that, but it's even proven that they are robots in that one episode where starbuck is stranded on a planet, and finds a crashed centurion ship, and even rebuilds and reprograms one of the cylons? That was my all time favorite episode. No backstory eh? Right.. morons.

Moving on, I also loved the part where some guy is commenting how they were so nice in giving the fans the Signature Cylon scanning red eye (so we could relate to something in this otherwise pathetic attempt). But did they put it on the actual robots?? Nope.. they slapped it on their damn ships! Everytime they showed the ships with the scanning eye, I couldn't stop thinking "woohoo.. now we have Knight Rider in space! Go Kitt!" All we need is Hasselhoff popping out of the top of one of those things and the look will be complete.

Ok this has been a long rant, but I have years of anticipation and hope utterly dashed from me. I had always secretly wished there would be a revival, as I have never stopped being a Galactica fan. But this dribble they are shovelling to us is as "straight to video" worthy as most of the cheap garbage that tries to pass off as sci/fi lately.

After watching the lowdown, I scrambled on the net to see if I could find a support group for the mental therapy this crap caused me to need. Sorry to vent on you all, I just feel so let down.

I need a hug :(

Thanks guys. I feel welcome here. I'm pretty active in other forums (One for Star Wars and one or two non sci fi related), but I feel this one will become familiar stomping ground for me from now on :)

One thing I forgot to mention in my rant... And I see it has been mentioned before but damn... JMS should sue the pants off these producers! Not only did they raid their uniform storage boxes, but they pretty much grabbed as much free license from the ship designs as they could! These are not Cylon ships.. these are the Shadows from Sah' Ha' Dum!

I will admit.. the actual space battle scenes did draw me in a bit... they looked good, albeit pretty dark. But I think the reason they looked good to me was how much they stole the look from Bab 5. But my suspended disbelief is shattered when they show the NEW AND IMPROVED GALACTICA!!

It's like a cross between something out of Aliens, Bab 5, and Startrek... complete with 4 pylon nacelles! I was half expecting someone to yell out ENGAGE! during the bridge scenes...

So sad...

At any rate... thanks for the welcome, and I am working on getting us some group therapy lol :)

welcome, Seether!

and just so no one jumps down your throat about it: the evil villan of BSG was Baltar, played with enthusiasm by the late John Colicos. One of the last (if not the last) pieces he ever did on film was to appear in Richard Hatch's 2nd Coming Trailer, which was an earlier, more to most fans' liking attempt to revive BSG.
