I see lots of similarities between Sci-Fi's marketing of the Dune mini-series and the way they're handling BG2003. Does anyone remember the hype and ads that were running non-stop for "Dune" and "Children of Dune?" Those shows came and went...then out came the DVDs and a few re-runs. Then nothing.

That's how this "Battlestar Galactica" production will go. All hype...then fizzle. Years from now people will see the DVD in a "$5.00 or less" bin and say "I don't remember this coming out."

Don't get me wrong. I thought the Dune series was "okay" but I didn't care for the Sardukar French pastry chefs. Sci-Fi always has to mess up something in their shows.

Believe me...this re-make is doomed to obscurity.

I am a huge Dune fan and I did think the scifi series was more true to the books but there were some glaring problems that bothered me. The big one was the sietches were open air and there would be Fremen walking around in the open without stillsuits! I was also very disappointed in the acting and over all look of the sets and lighting. It looked very fake in many scenes and the cast was much better in the D. Lynch version.
I agree that they are flooding the viewers with the same amount of hype for BG03 and I think it is going to suffer from the same short comings as Dune did and more.

Over here in the UK, there probably wasn't as much hype about Dune as in the US (hell, Children of Dune was tucked away on the Hallmark Channel - where the viewing figures would have been even less!).

I loved Dune, the film (my first experience of Dune!) - the atmosphere, the music, the characters, and the story of a young man finding his destiny. I read the book later and realised that so much was missed out of the movie (I do have the 'TV special' DVD - which I haven't watched fully yet - which does attempt to fill some of the gaps - but has an annoying use of stock footage!).

With the TV mini-series, I like it for being the same story, viewed through different eyes. To me, the sets and lighting look as if the show were a stage play rather than a TV series.

Children of Dune, however, was an oddment. Changes to the cast, and compressing two of the books into a single series, may have meant that the producers may have tried to take on too much.

As for BsG, I'm amazed by what I've read regarding the advertising blitz the show is getting - adverts on the subway?! (TV is rarely advertised on the London Underground - from my experience.)

All the best,
