I hate to say it, but that's a tall order there! I assume you're referring to the same book sold at Intergalactic Trading (in the U.S.). That's a LOT of pages to transcribe and/or scan.

Since there's no official canon materials, it's difficult to say this book is the definitive guide. But it's comprehensive and worth buying. I'd recommend checking on eBay.com, where Intergalactic sells them from time to time. Buy a copy if you can.

While I know that this book is not official, I have always wanted to buy a copy. How is the art work in the book? I have seen some fan efforts for other shows (Star Trek for example) that are pretty rough. I hope that it is filled with beautiful blueprints and diagrams of the Colonial hardware. What is your opinion of the work?

The artwork is very amateurish, unfortunately. The hand-drawn artwork (all line art, in b&w) isn't very refined; it's rough. Don't get me wrong: It's still very enjoyable to read.

I'd like to see an open source-style project where people contribute to an online technical manual. (It sounds easier said than done.)

Right now, I'm in the process of migrating the 1970s "Space: 1999 Technical Manual" to a publicly available file for all to enjoy on Space1999.org -- and anyone else wishing to host a copy themselves. (The content is already done; it's a far different scenario than what I'm proposing, though.)

In the case of BG, fans would be banding together to create something brand new. They would be generating quality renders, interpretations, etc. of the BG universe tech, uniforms, known history, etc.

I think of the work started by Ken Thomson, Jr. and Mike McAdams for their "Battlestar Galactica Tech Journal" which we never published at Realm Press. I also think of repcisg's work, Susan Paxton's research, Adam Stacey's timelines/history, and the work of others which exists. There are so many, many interpretations of the Galactica universe which are open-ended. It might make a definitive guide impossible to create. (Bless John LaRocque for maintaining his BG FAQs and maintaining order amidst the potential chaos.)

Then again, it would make a wonderful educational guide for newcomers to the original BG series... and existing fans, too.

The door is wide open for anyone to start such an endeavor, whether one project or several dozen.
